BEN Coker’s first goal in 18 months secured Southend United s 2-1 win against Scunthorpe United at Roots Hall this afternoon.

Fantastic result and a much better second half performance. Coker was a class above and Mooney never stopped working hard. Although I'd send Pigott back to his beloved Charlton after that. Looked like he was sulking the whole game, his body language and attitude was appalling and I got fed up pretty quickly with watching him jog about, moping with his head down. Love him for his goal at Wembley but let's use the wages elsewhere as he clearly thinks he's better than us and doesn't want to be here.

Special mention too for Bentley who made a couple of game saving saves and Prosser for a great tackle and goal line clearance.

Dire first half. got better in the second.

Great to have back to back wins and Coker Mom with another assist and a goal.

Have to agree with above, dont see Pigott being signed come next year without a big improvement. Dont agree with the comment about him not wanting to be here, but Im not sure he brings anything to the table.

Coming back from 1-0 down shows resilience, the lads did well.

Bentley - 7 Quick distribution but sometimes puts Coker under pressure
Coker - 9 had a great game, an assist and a goal.
Prosser - 8 distribution was good, a couple of last ditch tackles, one to get Bolger out of the mire.
Bolger - 6 Won some headers
O'Neill - 6 Didn't win any headers
Timlin - 7 got a goal but until he scored, was a bit confused with how he was playing. If he was supposed to be on the wing, he forgot. Kept being drawn inside, which meant Coker first, then O'Neill had nobody in front of them.
Deegan - 8.5 bossed the game well, won the ball and distributed it well too. Does have a bit of finesse and a fair bit of vision
Leonard - 7 Better than of late but expect more from him. Great through ball to Mooney near the end
Worrall - 6.5 For me, well under par today
Mooney - 7.5 Does a lot of work off the ball. His movement, tenacity and positioning and closing bring others into the game
Pigott - 3 No passion, no desire. I'd send him back and get another youngster in

Subs

Hunt - 8. He will be our saviour this season. The game changed once Hunt came on. Intelligent player with a quick brain. Great link up play with Coker for the 2nd goal

Weston - 5 Didn't really so much at all
Rea - Not enough time to rate

Disagree with the comments regarding Piggott, as I felt he was trying but just lacks confidence! He worked hard to close the ball down but it didn't come off for him time and time again and in the end he stopped believing it would. He needs some good man management to lift his head up if we are to see the best of him.

Not a great game and one that we probably just about edged although we seemed certain to throw away the points as soon as the board came up, taking it to the corner then giving it straight to them! Luckily we held out although I would like to see us being more clinical!

Take the three points and hopefully we can build on the back to back wins!

I actually think this is intentional.

Whilst its 442 its a lopsided one. Worrall is the only winger and plays both sides, the other 3 play more centrally with Timlin/Leonard moving out wider at times, but generally ensuring we have a strong middle.

That's the way I see it. Adds an extra man in the middle, meaning we can try and nick the boy further up the pitch. Then which ever side worrall plays, we try and attack down. By the time the opposition win it back, it' enough time for Timlim/leonard to push over and aid coker/o'neil.

Good game today, I think we really are trying to play some nice stuff on the deck and do enjoy it. Yes, it can go wrong and we can be caught in possession but I much rather see us try than to hoof it through to mooney/piggot, as we don't have the Corr type player up front. Makes a much more entertaining attacking game and think we have really improved our forward line this year on what Corr brought to the table.

So far with the games I have seen this season the following players have more than held their own in league one :
Coker - classy LB . We have been lucky over the years with LBs and he is up there
Hunt - no brainier
Bentley - will play at the highest level
timlin - found his level IMO , will spend rest of his career in lge 1
Mooney - has operated before at this level so is used to it
Worral - he's the player I want the lads to get the ball too, exciting and has good vision
Leonard- for me he is to in and out of games , when he's in he is defo lge 1 standard

The rest I feel have to play at 100% of their game to keep up with this standard and at present they are doing so with the exception of Piggot and Atkinson who I don't rate

Can't stand Pigott. The kid really rates himself doesn't he. Love it if his loan was ended Monday. You're useless mate. Oh and good win. UTB

Last week after the Millwall win I said that wining ugly or pretty it doesn't matter as much as building a 'hard to beat' mentality and believing we belong in this division. After this afternoon's offering I saw quite a few signs that we are starting to believe. Consistency will be the order of the day and two back to back wins will help that in the squad.

So who did well today? Well I don't think anyone had a bad game but those that you would really expect to step up to the plate did so. Mooney deserved a goal, I thought and his work rate and experience were there for all to see (Jonny Stokes take note on the work rate bit). Special mentions go to Coker, my MoM and Prosser. Say what you like about the guy, he really has really grabbed his opportunity with both feet. I don't think he will rise above FL1, but he has shown that last week's performance wasn't a one off in the side. Bentley was his normal shot stopping self, but I though his distribution was a bit suspect at times. When Hunt emerged from the bench you could feel the excitement round the stand, well I was excited anyway. I've left Pigott till last. Truthfully, I just don't know what I think of him, so I'll leave it at that until I've seen enough to know.

ps - We're 4 points off a play-off place for those interested.

They scored a very decent goal. I was right in line with it and saw it all the way. I feared that was it as we had no width and lacked quality.

Hunt made such a difference and we looked like we had 11 players for the first time. We do need to be better though, mooney could have made it comfortable at the end.

Coker was brilliant
Deegan was very very good. Mooney put such a shift in, prosser was excellent.
Everyone else was good other than Piggott. Sorry, he was poor and didn't seem to me to put a shift in.

I don't like the formation but we've won with it twice. We're just so narrow and unbalanced but we've won twice with it

Buzzing after that, just got home after witnessing a vital win that featured three fantastic goals. Scunny were disappointing, and so were we in the first half an hour, but all credit to the lads again for their determination.

Bentley, great strike for the opener but wondering if he will be disappointed to be beaten from that far out. One wobble at a corner but a great save after the interval.
O'Neil, expected more from him and not very good in the air (spotted that in the warm up) the visitors targeted that.
Prosser & Bolger - solid and switched on.
Coker - Sublime - cannot wait to see his involvement in both goals on the TV tonight - superb strike for his one. Defended well too.
Worrall, much better than last home match.
Leonard, poor in that first half hour, we noticeably improved when he was moved out of the centre (and so did he).
Timlin, tireless performance from the skipper.
Deegan - did well, great slide in that led to our equaliser but I would have taken him off after 80 - walking a tightrope for a red.
Pigott - Sure he was trying but the lad needs more aggression, a better recovery rate (for someone so young) looked moody and walked straight down the tunnel when withdrawn.
Mooney - Didn't get much help from the ref in the first period but was much livelier in the second.

Shame to see Coker need tinhave a dig at the fans. It is ****ing embarrassing some of the things the pop out of people's mouths after a team just scored against us.

I agree with you on piggot. For a man not trying or interested he did a massive amount of defensive wo chasing the ball down. People have made their minds up and just see the worst. Oneil and bolger were awful 1st half and we could and should have been behind. Infact had prosser played like oneil in the first half he would be slaughtered on here
