Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-0 Tamworth

Bims been as good as I thought he would be from when I first saw his first brief cameo and posted very positively about, whilst the knockers started in

However, I doubt very much whether we stand a chance of capturing him, to be honest although would be delighted , if not very surprised. Luton will be very much on the ball about his current performances and know what they have on their hands, plus his fee rate will be rising sharply

Great to be back to our solid defensive self at Roots Hall despite the changes. Tamworth looked like a scruffy Sunday league team and played like it. Plenty of ****housery (special mention for their number 18) and endeavour but very little quality. Thankfully we got the two early goals and kept them at bay. A third in that early spell may have broken their spirit and we may have tonked them like Barnet did. We were comfortable in the end though and the early goals meant we did not buckle to the bullys as we may have done earlier in the season. Worry for Pepple, who was excellent, third straight booking and seems to get singled out for enthusiastic endeavour. Not a bad foul in him but the cheats in previous games have got him booked. Bonne had his best game but seems destined not to score, won numerous balls in the air. Morton and Coker again dictated play in midfield and the changes at the back did not duly affect us. Jeacock is the right size to cope with the aerial threat that Tamworth provided and looked comfortable on his debut. An all round good team performance.

Jeacock 7
Taylor 7.5
Crowther 7.5
Ralph 7
GSM 7
Coker 8
Morton 8
Husin 6.5
Bridge 7
Bonne 7.5
Pepple 8.5 MOTM

Walker 6.5
KAF 6
Miley 6.5
Gubbins 6
Wind 5.5

Bim my MOTM, great finish for the first goal and great work for the assist on the second. His physicality caused massive problems for Tamworth and they must have been relieved when he came off. Looking forward to the cup game now and we must believe we can turn Charlton over. UTB

A good first half against woeful opposition. Their only player that posed any threat being well marshalled by Ralph. Their kit was a mixture of one of those sought after rare subbuteo kits and, as someone pointed out at half-time, lederhosen.
I think the reason Bonne was kept on the pitch so long was an attempt to boost his confidence. That didn’t work.
Special mention to Morton, who I have been a bit meh about in the past. I thought he was excellent in the CDM position today.
Morton generally looks good against the weaker sides, and less good against the better ones.

A united team performance and everyone played their part. Note well we got two goals through physicality, perseverance and the ball on the deck. Something we need to learn from. The team did well but we could and should have put them to the sword. Goal difference may be a big factor come the end of the season.

A lot of people are deriding Tamworth but if they are so bad, what is our excuse? They were three points ahead of us going into that game. How can such a poor team do better than us? I expect they will be found wanting but it does highlight some of the inconsistency we have produced this term.

Pepple is a grafter, jury out on his skill level and nous, but he will get goals because he wants them enough. Well done the lad. Morton and Coker were excellent and the latter looks the real deal. It's so nice to see a midfielder look to get into the oppo box and get his reward of a goal. A very good prospect.

I haven't been very impressed by Bonne but he did a lot better yesterday and I thought he looked sharper as the game went on. He may yet win a lot over. He was also vocal, pointing where players should be and showed appreciation for good work by his teammates. So well done Bonne.

I think Crowther is coming to terms with playing in the middle of a back three and improving game by game.

I'm not sold on Walker, hoping I'm proved wrong, as he doesn't seem to know when to release a ball, gets robbed too often and lacks the end product.

Taylor is Taylor. Mr. Dependable. He has a good footballing brain and the physicality to work so hard for the side.

Ralph looks a little off his best and Gus is grafting but falling short of what we know he can do. He is still a great scoop.

Husin is very disappointing and has been for some time. He is better than that and maybe some bench warming will revitalise his hunger. The same for Bridge, but with him I suspect most teams have sussed how to play against him as it has been a very predictable 'style'.

A good solid performance which hopefully will bring more. UTB

Moncur?

Agreed. It was depressingly predictable that people on here would look only at his stats and decide he wasn't good enough before he even kicked a ball.

SOUTHEND United striker Bim Pepple stressed beating Tamworth mattered more than his own impact on the match.

Pepple scored one and set up the other for Oli Coker in a comfortable 2-0 triumph for the Shrimpers at Roots Hall.

But the on loan Luton Town forward took most satisfaction from the score-line.

“It was good but three points is the most important thing,” said Pepple.

“I feel like I could’ve pushed for another goal and I’m not really satisfied with just one but the win is important and we’ll take that.”

The victory made it four games unbeaten for Kevin Maher’s who now sit 14th in the National League standings.

And Pepple was pleased to pick up another victory in Blues’ third game in the space of eight days.

“We had a target at the beginning of the week of how many points we wanted to get and we’ve reached it now,” said Pepple.

“Doing it at home is good and we just want to kick on now.

“We know to push on up the league we need to do well at home and this is a good start but we’re not satisfied and want to push on.”

The Shrimpers had suffered three home defeats in succession before beating the Lambs in the first ever meeting between the two teams.

And that made it another memorable afternoon for the infectious Pepple.

“I’m enjoying my football and this is the most minutes I’ve played since coming to England,” said Pepple.

“Every day I go out and try to prove I should be playing and starting and give the gaffer a reason to pick me.

“I’d like to think I’m doing that right now but I have to keep on doing it.

“I’m enjoying myself but I know there’s still a lot of chances I’m missing I need to clean up on.

“I want to kick on from here.”

Pepple’s next chance to impress will come against League One side Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup on Saturday.

And the 21-year-old is already looking forward to the first round tie.

“It will be exciting and everyone is looking forward to it,” said Pepple.

“We’ll give it our best shot.

“We know we’re underdogs but we won’t look at it like that.

“We’ll give 100 per cent and whatever happens, happens.”

However, Pepple is eager to give Blues fans even more to cheer.

“Since I’ve come in the supporters have been brilliant with me,” said the forward.

“I enjoy it and the whole team loves it.

“It gives us energy when they sing and they’re pushing us on. Hopefully we can repay that with wins.”
