Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-0 Scunthorpe

My Ratings:

Mildenhall 8: Made 2 or 3 fantastic saves and was faultless throughout.

Sankofa 7: Decent enough at the back and occasionally ventured forward.

Clarke 7: Solid enough and had an ongoing battle with Hoops in the first half.

Dervite 6.5: Again like Clarke, solid enough. Although I've noticed his concentration does sometimes drop, ala Francis, and he got very lucky with the mistake that let Hooper in on goal in the second half. He needs to say a big thank you to Mildenhall.

Barrett 6.5: The usual Barrett left back performance in that he offered nothing down the line going forward and got caught out of position on more than one occasion. That said, he wasn't up against an out and out wide player and so wasn't caused too many problems defensively.

Grant 7.5: A decent performance from him. He's got better there's no doubt about it.

McCormack 7: He gets bumped up to a 7 for scoring. There's still a lot lacking from his game and I still don't trust him in possession of the ball.

Christophe 6: He can be truly terrible with the ball at his feet and that was evident on more than one occasion last night. Did put in a couple of useful tackles though.

Moussa 5: I'm struggling to think of anything he contributed other than some ok set pieces and one shot in the first half. He never saw the ball and was never wide enough to be of any use to our breaks forward. A left winger Tilly and Moussa in the centre. Please?

Laurent 5: Barely did anything of note in his 25 minutes.

Robinson 7.5: He's coming in handy now we're becoming more and more a hit it and hope team as his pace will pressure the defenders. A nice finish for the goal, but just what was the keeper doing?

Subs:

Barnard 6: As I stated on another thread, just not the same player he once was at the moment. Moan, moan, moan, moan, moan. Concentrate on playing please, Lee!

Francis 5: The only real time the ball came to him and he tried to nutmeg the player, failed, and put us under pressure. He got a rollocking from the bench for that as well.

Scannell /: Was only on the pitch a couple of minutes, but gave it away in a dangerous area, probably owing to the fact he forgot he played for Southend given the last few months.

Surprised by your rating of Dervitte Andy. For me he won everything last night, imperious. Best centre back we've had since Sodje in our title winning season.

Dervitte and Robinson have rejuvenated the side, in the same way Leon Clarke did last season. Sadly I feel there is little chance of getting either of them which is a shame. Also a shame that Tilly has taken 2 years to break up the Clarke/Barrett partnership. Had we got in someone like Dervitte last season we may have gone up automatically.

Robinson has been a revelation but hes almost a one man band up front at the mo as Barney was poor last night I thought and we dont have many other options. Defininitely should be looking at a loan move for the weekend.

Agree about Moussa though, needs to be the playmaker in the centre. Thought Jeff had a poor game and maybe needs to drop to the bench and bring in Scannell on the left hand side or maybe even Johnny Herd.

-Really impressed with moose again.. even though he's not a winger obviously!

-Mildenhall had a great game

-Midfield are battling away pretty well

-Defence looked untroubled for the most of it

-And it was brilliant to see us getting that second goal to finish them off, rather than a nervous ending

Looked good lastnight imo
Congrats to all the players and staff, just need consistency (mentioned on another thread) now and we'll give a late push to the playoffs ifwe keep performing like this

A good night, a great result on the back of the Col U game which I hope will bring the crowds back as the just over 6000 attendance was pretty poor.

I thought the crowd was disappointing too, however when you check the paper this morning, of the 8 games played in League 1 last night, ours was the biggest crowd.

I guess being disappointed at a crowd of just over 6000 on a Champions League Tuesday night in February against Scunthorpe shows how far we've come in terms of our expectations. I can remember not too long ago when our expectations would have been a crowd half that size!

If only Tilly had realised sooner that we needed another centre half. Most of us had been saying since about July 08, but im glad 6 months down the line, Dorian has come in and done well. Although every game he does have one major lapse, which luckily hasn't cost us a goal ... yet!

Time will tell!

July 08?

Try March 2006!

Fair play to Wiggy for coming a little late to the "Mildenhall isn't so bad" table!

Mildy - 8, good game, couple of occasions where I felt he could have been a little stronger but really nothing major
Sankofa - 7, also a good game, the lad is growing in confidence and combined well with Granty I thought
Dervite - 7, a couple of little fluffs but solid and handled Hayes and Hooper well on the whole
Clarke - 8, pick of the defence again for me, said elsewhere he'd have Hooper in his pocket and he did most of the time
Barrett - 7, another typical Barrett game,
Grant - 8, excellent game, was creative and used his skills - hope the injury's not too bad. He's desperate for some recognition from the crowd though, saw him saying "what about me" when Theo was getting all the plaudits
Macca - 8, another who had an excellent game and thank God he scored, hopefully he can settle down now and be the midfielder we know he can
Jeff - 7, another who got no change from the ref, did well
Moussa - 7, some good movement and covered Barrett well
Laurent - 6, what a shame, looked as if he was really going to cause them problems, again, hope it's not serious
Robinson - 9, MOTM for me, obviously the intention to play as we did, and he thrived on it.

Subs: Barney for Laurent - 7, I thought Barney did well enough, some intelligent play, no change at all out of the officials, joke of a booking
Franno for Grant - 6, not on for that long, but a couple of errors - please can the crowd get off his back though, it's not helping.

Officials - a begrudging 5, did ok, got some things completely wrong but not too bad in comparison to some of the dross we've had

TBV - 7, a little quiet first half but once it got going it was much better, am loving the Latino drum beat!

Ive been racking my brains but what song could possibly work with the name anthony grant? i just cant think of 1 that works? i think this is where the problem is.but he does need 1
theo robinson is an easy name to make into a chant.

In all fairness to antony grant when watching the game against Chelsea with a few people who never watch southend mostly good comments were aimed at him

Agree completely. I have no doubt we would be in the championship if we had broken the Barrett/Clarke partnership last year and signed someone of quality.
Moussa is in my view our best midfield player so he should play in his favoured position and probably try and play the Maher role. Seeing as we dont bother with specialist wide players anymore, I see no harm in trying Herd there. He is positive going forward, has a long throw and would give us balance as he is left footed.

Well maybe he should have acknowledged the applause he was getting when he was subbed. there were many in the east on their feet and he never looked up once or clapped any part of the ground.

Last night, even though I was disappointed with the attendance last night, I thought the crowd (especially around me in East Red) was very positive and there was plenty of encouragement being offered to the players. Going back to Crewe, people jumped on top of the players after one bad pass or a dodgy lay-off yet tonight there was plenty of encouraging even when they did the same things as last Tuesday. Well played the crowd last night.

As for the game. Proper game of two halves. First half we looked a little bit jaded and they looked very good on the ball. The link up play between Hooper and Hayes looked promising for them, and Hooper had a great chance to make to 1-0 before Mildenhall pulled off the first of 3 wonderful saves that won us the game.

2nd half we looked to dictate proceeds I felt. He passed the ball better and the work rate was upped by everyone another 10/15%. Obviously the goal lifted everyone, and it was very well taken from Theo but the goalkeeper should have come for it and cleared the West Stand. Straight away they had a great chance through Hayes but again Mildenhall was there to make the save with his legs. We grabbed the second with Moussa playing it wide left for Robinson who crossed into Barney who laid it off to Macca despite being fouled and Macca rolled back to last season and scored an excellent goal. Dervite had a shocker on the half way line to allow Hooper in but Mildenhall saved the best till last to make a wonder save. Also, they hit the cross bar following a mistake from Francis. Despite 7 minutes being added, Scunny never really threatened during those minutes.

Mildenhall - Excellent performance. Absolutely faultless. Dominated his box and pulled off 3 top draw saves to win us the game.

Sankofa - Is growing with every game. Produced a brilliant cross in the second half, and should off scored with a free header in the first half but a very solid performance.

Clarke - Very good performance from Clarkey. Between him and Dervite they dealt with a good strike partnership in Hooper and Hayes with ease. Keep it going.

Dervite - Bar his lapse of concentration on the half way line to allow Hooper in, I thought he played very well. We look much better defensively since his arrival.

Barrett - Solid enough performance. Dealt well with their tall right winger in the air. Not his favoured position but doing well enough there.

Grant - I'll admit to thinking Tilson had got this decision wrong before the game. Grant on the right wing at home? But I hold my hands up Tilson got it spot on again. Granty played really well and offered more of an attacking threat then I'd ever seen from him before.

JFC - Played well in the middle of midfield and some of his tackling was excellent.

Macca - Getting back to his best. Very good goal, can't believe it was 11 months since his last.

Moussa - Our weak link last night. That’s not knocking him because I thought everyone played well but Moussa wasn't really involved in the game enough I felt. Decent set piece delivery though.

Laurent - Didn't effect the play at all last night.

Robinson - What a player we have on our hands at the moment. Pace a plenty and showed some real composure in front of goal. Plenty of energy and was a real thorn in their defence last night.

Subs:

Barnard - Good to see him back properly. His workrate is superb, and played a big part in the second goal. I was worried Laurent coming off and Barnard coming on would affect us because of the lack of height up top but I think it encouraged us to knock the ball around again. There was plenty of talking between the front two as well.

Francis - Two moments summed up Francis last night. Firstly, he played a brilliant pass down the right hand side to Robinson which shows what he has the ability to do. Then, the error that led to him hitting the cross bar.

Scannell - Probably had about 2 touches when he came on.

Officials - Both linesmen where awful last night I thought but I thought the ref had a reasonably good game. I don't like having him ref because I recall many poor performances but last night was a rare bright spot for him.

Barnard 4
Francis 5.5
Scannell 4.5

4 for Barney? he had a hand in the 2nd goal yet 4.5 for
Scannell who was on for two minutes and trotted around at a snails pace instead of being a bundle of energy as you would expect someone with fresh legs!

Have just seen the highlights on BW (extended hightlights ,advertised but not yet working) and felt urged to make a comment about goals, particularly the second.
The first was a brilliant pass from Grant and an extra cool finish from Robinson. It was the second that left me open mothed in admiration, a brilliant team effort started by Francis on the left with some great work and passing from Robinson onto Moussa then onto Barnard before the final pass and excellent finish from Macca. Don't know whether it really has been given its justified praise on here ......it must go down as one of the best worked goals of the season
