Great performances all round. Defensively sound. Great working off the ball. Nice patterns of play and a goal threat throughout.

Oldham worked the ball around but the team were resolute and pressed them into errors.

Dissapointing crowd today just 5500 home fans. Last season's average gate was around 7500 odd with about 7000 home fans. It seems that PBs nonsense this season has made some fans stay away.

Play like today more often and hopefully they will return.

Big games against bradford and charlton soon should see 8k+ and 10k+ respectively.

A good day at the office.

Don't forget it was a re-arranged game. Several of our group had other plans already made for today. If that was replicated across the whole crowd, that would have been about 500 people light

Can't have expected us to win a first round cup tie then..

No change there then.

But I had other plans for today which I made after we'd been beaten by Yeovil. Fortunately I was able to change them and am now NOT going to Bristol next week as a result.

Great all round team performance today. We started each half a little slowly but settled quickly, although to be fair didn't do much until the penalty, but then I thought it was all us until their penalty which came a bit out of the blue.

Typical, I thought, same old same old. Dominate the game, go one up, not build on it and let the opposition back in.

Step forward Mark Oxley for what was a fantastic penalty save, one of the best I've seen because that ball was well and truly travelling. To get such a strong hand on it and up and over not just the bar but the stand as well from where it was took some doing. Take a bow, sir.

At 1-0 it is always a nervous affair but the second goal was a candidate for goal of the month. Firstly the back-heel from Fortune that took their number 2 player out, then for the sliding cross from McLaughlin that kept the ball in play when everyone thought it was going out and then a calm volleyed finish from Mr Wright.

After that we could have extended the lead but ended up playing out time. They had a couple of headers they should have done better with but we have that rare animal - a clean sheet - and an excellent all round team performance.

Ratings -

Oxley - 8.5 - Game changing save but not much else to do

Demetriou - 8 - Cool penalty but gave one away too. However, generally a very good game.
Hendrie - 8.5 - Very close to my MOM. Had a stroke of luck early on and that gave him confidence. My word, positionally he was everything Timlin hasn't been and linked up very well with whoever was in front of him. He made several runs and put over some terrific crosses. We really benefited from that and he has done enough to keep the shirt.
Turner - 8.5 - At last a proper central defender. If he stays fit we will keep more clean sheets than not, mark my words.
Ferdinand - 8 - Chalk and cheese from last weeks performance. Even looked dominant on occasion as he can trust the players alongside him.

Kightly - 7 - Was playing well until his injury, but we still - in my opinion - look a more balanced midfield with him not in it.
Leonard - 8 - Usual Lenny performance - should have done better with a header in the first half.
Wright - 8.5 - Well taken goal, barely put a foot wrong and was probably his best game since joining
McLaughlin - 8 - Phenomenal cross for the second. Amazing first touch. Getting back to his best.

Cox - 8 - Good performance and link up play, I wish he would shoot a bit more quickly sometime though
Fortune - 9 - MOM - Great hold up play, lay offs, ball winning, the performance almost had the lot. A goal would have capped it.

Subs -

Wordsworth - 7 - Rusty but gave the midfield a better balance
Ba - 6 - Didn't get long to shine

Ref - 6 - Two soft penalties in my opinion. But otherwise ok.

First thing first I always look at the work rate and commitment and today was top draw by all our lads, so well done indeed.
Lots of shouts for MOM but would be to tight to pick one player as it really was a team performance today.

Back 5 were all on their game. Pleased for Hendrie, he obviously lost a bit of confidence at Blackburn last season but today he looked like the lad we had on loan. What I like about him is he delivers a good ball without fuss when he gets forward, like the one Lenny should have scored from in the first half.

Turner and Anton both had good games. Turner does most of the attacking but when he had to, Anton had the confidence to attack a ball knowing Turner would cover. Which hasn't always been an option. Nice to at last cheer a penalty miss, thanks to the Ox. He claimed a deep cross at the back post first half but the good thing was Turner blocked their forward coming in to protect his keeper. That's where experience makes a difference.

Obviously Fortune would be up there for MOM, not bad for old boy. Good work from McL and cool finish from Wright. Good energy to get in where it counts at the far post.

Yes we had chances to score a 3rd but the final ball or shot let us down. Oldham had a couple of headers they should have done better with. Then the game fizzled out a bit, compared to some other last 10's we have seen at the Hall this season. When it goes past the 80 minute mark you have to think game management and just see it out, which we did comfortably.

The attendance was disappointing, considering we haven't lost at home yet. So best grab a mate and get down to RH as we now have some cracking games coming up.

The only down side was the attendance.... Pretty poor than what I'd expect.

It will go up for the next home game Leo, especially if we do ok on the road in between. No pressure there then!

I have to say this and I'm sure I'm not the only one that has noticed, where are the PB moaners? They're not here.

The usual crap we see and the delight in putting down the team and the management, its nice not to see.

The only person who comes out with credit, who has been positive is DWB, so I take my hate off to you

Come on mate, don't sink to their levels.

I always 100% support the team. Oldham may not be one of the best sides to play here this season but you can only beat what's in front of you and the lads did that today. Well taken penalty by Demi, a proper LB performance from Hendrie and mesmeric skills from Fortune added to a good penalty save from Oxley, which was equal to a goal in reality, sent all Southend supporters home happy.

I am really hoping Hendrie keeps his place. His performance today was on a par with his performances during his loan spell.

Fair play to you mate..............

Why have you not even mentioned Anton Ferdinand in your match report :winking:

Well, that's the left-back issue resolved.

A special nod, also, to :-

Mark Oxley
Jason Demetriou
Anton Ferdinand
Michael Turner
Josh Wright
and
Marc Antoine-Fortune

I might get slated for this, but I didn't think we played any better or worse than the previous two games, IMHO.

RATINGS :

Oxley 8, Demetriou 8, Turner 8, Ferdinand 8, Hendrie 8.5, Kightly 7, Leonard 7.5, Wright 8, McLaughlin 7, MAF 9 MOM, Cox 7

Let's start with the negative..... we only got two. Oldham were poor, though fair play to them, they did have a go. However, it doesn't mask the fact they weren't good. You can only beat what is put in front of you, but..... we so nearly went in 1-1 at half time because we'd only managed to get a penalty on target.

However, that must not deflect on what was a confident performance, including a solid defensive display, some tidy midfield stuff and both forward linking well with those around.

Oxley continues to be a rock, penalty stop was top drawer - everything else he did looked calm and effortless.

Turner looks a proper player. With one exception he won everything in the air and on the deck, positioning was fautless and alongside him Anton looked solid. Hendrie came in and did the job. I love Timlin, but he isn't a left back and based on this performance Hendrie deserves another chance. He isn't (and never was) a bad player and today he put in a good shift. Dimi looks the player Walsall raved about. Calm penalty kick, should have got a second and he made a great tackle in the penalty box (which unfortunately the ref got 100% wrong).

Midfield was a bit hit and miss. Kightly sums that up very well. At times, he looks every bit a top division players and at other times looks like he's never kicked a ball. Lenny was Lenny. We are really going to miss him. Wright had a decent game, took his goal well (just what he needed). Got stuck in and looked more settled than recently. Macca had his best game for some time, and put some good crosses in. Woody, looked a bit unfit but got better as the game went on. Could do with him firing on all cylinders.

Cox worked so hard, as he always does but could really do with a run of goals. Fortune had his best game this season, and their defence didn't know what to do with him. With Ranger seemingly unable to remember what it is he does, Fortune finding form is crucial.

Ref was either dreadful (their penalty being the obvious) or top drawer (for those that heard the comment he threw at Macca just before he was about to throw the ball away). Frustratingly inconsistent.

All in all a decent performance, and a much needed 3 points. We are 9th (how did that happen). But we've not scored three at home since 1st April (against Oldham, ironically). And that is a worry.

But a good day at the office, much helped by a more positive crowd reaction.

I mainly agree, the difference really was that Oldham missed their sitter today, plus Ferdinand didn't have a nightmare and we actually put one of our chances away, aside from that it was quite similar to Oxford (that's not a criticism though, I thought we played well against Oxford and were unlucky not to win).
