Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1 v Port Vale 3

A maximum of three out of ten for the whole sqaud, without exception. You think some of last seasons dross was painful to watch? Just be glad you didn't sit through this afternoons 96 minutes of absolutely shocking Sunday League fare.

Awful...the guy's may battle but IMO there is no class or any ideas on show whatsoever....If it had not of been for Morris and some awful finishing from the Vale forwards we would have lost by at least 6 goals.

0 and thats being kind. Total **** and not acceptable. Did anyone catch the attendance?

4946 I think the BBC said, which I think is very decent in the circumstances. We certainly cant complain that the public arent sticking with the lads in terms of bums on seats. Unfortunately I think some of the pre-season performances have raised expectations a bit too far too soon (and I include myself very much in that)

:(

poor, very very poor. Lump it up top type football with Paterson (skillful on the ground, no strength in the air) and sturrock up front, the less said about him the better, all effort no class. Lack of ideas, no plan b, deserved to get spanked today. Not gonna throw the towel in as it's 3 games in but we need to improve and FAST.
Morris 8
Prosser 1
Everyone else 3

On that performance, will ayrshire blue (I think.....4962) be rushing forward to claim his free tickets! Morris sounded as though he was virtually the only one who came out with any credit.

I thought last season's performances were bad and the worse I had seen in watching them for 41 years, but todays probably beats that. No passion, no width, no vision. Before the 'give them a chance ' brigade start I'm all for that but, show some fight. We got pushed off the ball too easy, and like others have said no width, I'm not a Soares hater but why does he keep drifitng into the middle of the field. When we did get the ball he was either not on the wing or when he was we played it away from him.

At least last season the players had the excuse of not getting paid and also playing the likes of leeds norwich etc.......but this year were playing **** teams who are out classing us at home..... honestly im just thinking what that make us?

Morris 6 Made some good saves, but needs to be more commanding.
Clohessy 6 gets forward well and has a bit of pace and fault for their second.
Choughlan 6 slow and did not bring the experience needed.
Prosser 4 Wow what a difference since the West Ham game, very poor.
Barker 5 At fault many times nowhere near championship quality.
Grant 6 Not creative enough.
Easton 5 Not captain material, seemed to go missing when the team needed him.
Paterson 6 our best threat, poor in the air.
Sturrock 5 Ran his socks of but was beaten by the centre back all day long.
Zaaboub 6 Put in some good balls first half.
Soares 5 does not like to go past players.
Subs 4
The team started well and was unlucky to go 1 down, once that happened there was no passion from the team.

First half was painful, second half wasn't much better.

I may post some ratings up later but I need to calm down a bit first.

Can't be bothered to rate everybody individually, but Prosser definitely deserved to be hauled off at half time. Absolute cack.

lowest league crowd since I don't know when and the performance matched it. Early days of course, but the blue square will be calling if we play like that more often than not. It really was that bad.

Well, now we know why Prosser came with the reputation he had. An absolute disgrace from front to back. No class, no ability, no passion, nothing. For what they are worth, marks (and these are generous):-

Morris 7
Clohessy 4
Coughlan 4
Prosser 2
Barker 6
Soares 3
Easton 3
Grant 5
Zaaboub 4
Paterson 5
Sturrock 6

Subs:-

Phillips 5
Corr 6
Spencer 5

Surely it is not time to throw the towel in? Today's performance was very poor when compared to the performance we put in against Bristol City but I don't think we will play that badly again this season - if we do then I think we will go down. Having said that and while I am not trying to defend the team I thought the referee was vey poor today - the 2 centre backs for Vale were continually making subtle fouls on our front line without punishment and I thought the referee was very biased towards them. Vale are a decent outfit who will do well this season. However we need to start winning and winning fast. Our front line is not a threat and we also have no width - however I still have hope and I think we will go to Wolves on Tuesday and get something out of it. Also I think it was pathetic of some people in the east to start slagging Sturrock senior off - what do you expect - he has brought in 19 new players - its going to take time but I think we all need to lower our expectations and if we reach mid-table then that should be seen as an achievement considering where we have recently come from. Keep the faith - in Sturrock we trust??!!??
