Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1, Ipswich Town 1

443 will only work with Corr. Maybe Mohsni. Anyone else in the centre position of the 3 will be isolated like Harris was tonight and the ball won't stick up there. Looked much more cohesive and dangerous at 442 in second half.

Very impressed with Kalala indeed but it's fairly obvious that he's a ready made replacement for someone.

Grant excellent. Barker solid. Gilbo and Clohessy safe enough. Very happy with Phillips in second half, felt safe with him, he's like a new player. Johnson and Hall both looked dangerous and our final balls into the box second half were very impressive thanks to these two.

N'Diaye.....meh......

I thought we looked physically imposing and played like it too. Without compromising our football, we got stuck in and stamped an authority on the game. We bullied Ipswich in the second half and it was good to see....

Totally agree that 4-3-3 didn't work tonight.

Bilel bossed at the back in the first half, and changed the game in the second half. 4-4-2 is a much better formation.

Phillips looked quite good when he came on, Johnson does a lot of running but not much end product, Granty was immense and Essien, sorry, I mean Kalala did do the simple thing.

I wasn't overly impressed with Harris, was expecting big things, but he held the ball up in the second half with some nice touches and got the equaliser.

Barker his usual strong self, everyone else did enough.

Problem with Harris was that he was isolated. He was much more effective second half when he had someone up top with him. I was impressed with his vision and reading of the game and the way he was constantly chatting to those around him to get them in the right positions and doing the right things.

I'd agree with Johnson for first half. Again, he looked much better after HT and his delivery second half was good.

Agree with the two above for the most part. A really enjoyable game for those that went - and far from friendly.

Koala looks like a 15 year old Essien and whoever said he likes a tackle was bang on. Looked solid against a pretty strong Ipswich midfield and could easily step in should Grant be moving elsewhere.

Grant had one of those games of two halves, for me. In the first half, he seemed to be trying too hard and not much was coming off. Much improved in the second half where he picked up an injury from his all-round effort.

N'Diaye... meh.

Harris has a great footballing brain but we have to play to his strengths. As JTSB said, he was isolated for much of the game but when he got involved, what... a... player!? Fantastic moment in the second half when he controlled a difficult ball under pressure on the right wing before flicking an excellent cross past all the players in the box to find Mohsni's head at the back post - the resultant header unlucky not to find the target, crashing off the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Harris' own header for the equaliser was his one real chance of the game. If you'd blinked at the wrong time, you'd have missed it, just like the fella trying to mark him at that precise moment.

Speaking of Mohsni, he again looked excellent when pushed up front. For me, in the absence of Corr and Sturrock who might both get the best out of Harris, and with Phillips able to step into the back line, Mohsni has to start the first game as a striker. When will he learn though? So easily wound up, and would undoubtedly have had more than the one yellow card if that had been a league game.

Phillips looked excellent settling in alongside Barker who also showed his class. Hall was close to his unplayable best and his striking of the dead ball had the Ipswich defence under pressure all night. Tidy performances too from Eric and Clohessy.

Lee Bowyer - what a ****!

Fair comments all around SBH apart from Eric who IMO is useless, a liability and has learned nothing new from last season.

I am assuming from reports that Leonard didn't get on tonight. I expect he will start against Needham Market as long as we can get a contract sorted out.

As has been said, we looked much better second half playing the 4-4-2. Harris and Mohsni worked very well together.

Harris impressed me with his hard work and running all night, and took his goal very well.

Mohsni is a legend, such a player, I just get nervous every time someone kicks him 'cos it looks like he wants to fight them 1-on-1 there and then.

Hall and Johnson much better second half playing as wingers. Grant and Kalala looked very strong and competitive together in centre-mid. Thought we missed Ferdinand first half, N'Diaye really didn't impress, but not so much second half when we looked very strong.

Defence generally looked pretty solid (bearing in mind Ipswich are Championship and have some very good players) throughout the game. Was encouraged by Phillips' second half performance after coming on for N'Diaye at half time.

So, generally, very positive after tonight. Very good game and second half performance by the Blues was fantastic.

I disagree. Thought he had decent game. Not fantastic by any means but pretty decent.

I hope I'm wrong but it seems that certain people seem to have decided that's he's rubbish due to last season and aren't willing to give him a chance this season.

True, he didn't feature tonight. Clohessy had a good game at right back, including an excellent assist (cross) for Harris' goal. Leonard, assuming we sign him, will be a decent back-up this season ( I hope).

Half the problem is he keeps being given the ball when he doesn't have time or space and has no option but to lump it. I think he is better than people think, if only he was given the ball when he isn't already being closed down. He puts a great cross in too when he gets the chance.

Excellent performance 2nd half, looked a totally different team.
Kalala and Grant bossed the midfield, I can see JP signing, especially with Kane not getting much action with Ireland.

First half Harris too isolated, really missed Corr and (to a lesser extent) Sturrock. Think Corr and Harris together will be a fearsome strikeforce as we certainly have the players to put the balls in the box.

JJ a bit frustrating, too JCR at times, looking for the byeline when the early ball couldve been a better option. Saying that he did use both feet well which will be a big advantage.

NDiaye- needs to learn you cant always take an extra touch and to go to the ball not let it come to you. Showed for me that there is a decent player lurking in there somewhere. But for now a utility player most likely. Also a silly boy who wouldve got sent off for that push before half time.

Back 4 did pretty well, kept Ipswich chances to a minimum, good to see Phillips back in a blue shirt. Thought Glen did well apart from his kicking.

Mohsni- the guy is a total enigma. Played well first half in defence. 2nd half looked an inspired decision to send him up front. He certainly had more of an impact than Crawford or Asante wouldve. However, he also looked like he could slap anyone in sight! Needs to get that balance right. At times he looks a matchwinner, othertimes like he could lose it and cost us a match. Unless Luggy can bring a striker in I would stick him up front vs Hereford and put Phillips in with Barker.

Good crowd tonight too, lively. Also thought Ipswich were very poor, look way off getting promotion from the Championship. All that money from the Wickham sale and they buy Nathan Ellington???

thank god bowyer and chopra wernt on the pitch when moshni had his 5 minutes of madness
george artemi was in a box today
n'diaye is awful

The first half he did not no where he was,it was like a cat caught in headlights, he was so out of position at times it was farcical.....I would love him to prove me wrong and come on leaps and bounds and of course it is just MY opinion, but for me he is not up to scratch in any part of his game.

Was very impresses with sawyer, although he didn't get long he was the most energetic player on the pitch and chased everything.

Morris - Couple of poor kicks but looked good collecting the ball
Clohessy - solid, got forward well
Eric - still a bit of hoof ball but has improved
Barker - solid as ever
Mohsni - if he doesn't get sent of once this season then that will be the biggest surprise
Phillips - glad he's back and looked comfortable
Prosser - not long enough to judge
Grant - gave everything and chased every ball, hope he stays
Kalala - did ok but a few misjudged incidence leading to a good chance for ipswich
N'Diaye - if he doesn't get sent of once this season then that will be the big surprise
Sawyer - not long but looked really energetic and up for it
MJL - not long enough but looks a decent back up
JJ - wasn't as good as i was hoping but still done fairly well
Hall - no where to be seen 2nd half
Harris - good header but as many have said was isolated on his own

First time I have seen us pre-season and this is what I thought personally:

1st half as said above the 4-3-3 did not work and Harris was left isolated and having to chase hopeful balls or flicking on to no one!

2nd half we played really well and was unlucky not to have wont he game IMO with the header off the bar when we were losing 1-0! The 4-4-2 worked a lot better and the players looked comfortable.

N'Diaye-IMO is a poor player someone buy this guy a first touch and a footballing brain (first impressions you guys have seen him more than me) either did not know what to do with it or he thought we were playing in red!

Kalala-I was impressed with and we should sign him as he won a lot of tackles and used the ball very well and played intelligent football.

Hall-Very impressive and at times Ipswich really struggled to handle him, also put some great deliveries in!

JJ- Heard JCR mentioned earlier and would agree and has pace to burn and I think will delight and frustrate this season.

Grant- Very impressive performance he won every tackle and used the ball so well and I really hope we can keep him.

Mohsni-I love this guy was commanding at the back and very good when put up top and slipped a couple of great balls in and was unlucky not to score when he hit the bar.

Harris- Isolated in the first half but showed some nice touches, in the 2nd he was a lot better when he had a strike partner and took his goal like a striker that’s scored as many goals as he has. The players need to give this guy service and if they do he will score a lot of goals.

Baker & Phillips both looked solid and did not put a foot wrong against some good players in Martin, Chopra and Scotland (oh Ellington played as well).

Morris-After a poor punch at the start did well after and pulled off a few good saves.

Clohessy-thought his distribution was poor in the first half but a lot better in the second and a nice assist for the goal!

Gilbert-was solid and got some decent deliveries into the box.

Prosser-not on long but dealt with Martin well who was always tricky.

Sawyer-Not given long but showed some nice touches and played a couple of very good passes.

IMHO Eric feels he must mark a quicker opponent closer than usual (which is the way generally) but Ipswich were either pulling the back line too far sideways (as Eric marked tight to the winger) & leaving wider channels, or, they would pull him wide & flood the left side with more players. Also too many high/switch balls (especially in the first half) were going to their winger as he seemed unable to deal with them defensively. I would say though that on the rare occasion he got forward; he delivered a good cross.
PS may find it hard to replace him, without pulling apart the back line, should he once again get injured this season.........
