Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-2 Col U *Spit*

Same old story - take your chances.

Team selection left me baffled aswell. A striker goes out so Walker should have come straight in, you dont make three positional changes that dont need to be made.

The last home game against Hartlepool, Laurent had a field day, so we stuck him up front and was starved of any service.

Couldn't fault Joyce for either goal, god knows what we'd have done if our embargo hadn't been lifted.

The first goal looked like a header by an un-marked player straight at the centre of goal and the ball went really close to Joyce, who I thought should have saved it and the second Joyce had the wall with 3 players wide of the right hand post and the striker had a massive gap to aim at and he did perfectly. IMO Joyce was at fault for both but especially the second with his rubbish positioning of the wall.

Was a silly free kick to give away in the first place with Francis dithering again. The first goal was down to Barrett backing off and letting the cross come in and Malone wrong side of his man.

Pretty gutless if I am honest...

I can handle losing to a side who are better than us if we give our all, but half of our team today did'nt look interested in our 'biggest' match. Did they not realise that it was a local derby.

Not too impressed with Col Ewe, but they did a job. Took their chances and hung on.

Why oh Why did'nt Tilly think..."Were two down, sod it......let's stick three up top". As much as he is a Saint, he is not the best tactically. He missed a trick there in my opinion.

Joyce - Awful, looked panicky and His kicks bareley reach the half way line.

McCormack - Poor yet again , not a patch of his former self. Could have been sent off for stupid wofting elbow.

Christophe - First touch gets worse (if thats possible).

Laurent - not a forward, offers us so much more when out wide and running towards goal. He is a waste with his back to goal IMHO

On a plus point, I thought that the Loaness in Morrison and Malone looked decent today. The Blues out sung Col Ewe all day aswell.

Team selection baffled me too. We played with effectivly three holding midfield players in Jeff Mac and Grant. We had no width as Grant never got down the line and no weight up front as Barny and Laurent were muscled out down the midle and when Laurent did move into his natural postion down the flank it left Barny all on his own! Why as well did it take us hour and half and two goals down before we injected any urgency into the game and raise the tempo to even bother Col U. We were at home for Chr*st sake yet we played like it was a practice match.

Joycey WAS at fault for both goals! The first one was a beeble header that Joycey was too slow to get down to and the second goal was appalling wall line up and poor positioning! GET THIS CLOWN OUT!

With us playing three holding midfielders, I still thought for the majority of the game our midfield outplayed theres. With a typical Boothroyd side it was all long ball so when the Colchester midfield got the ball they looked completely clueless and didn't know what to do with it.

Joyce and JFC were ****. The rest were alright with only Morrison and Moussa really impressing

Our Midfield are strong and workmanlike but create nothing...Moussa, Grant, McCormack and Christophe = 4 Central Midfielders and no width.

I Think Tilson got it wrong putting Laurent up top. Instead of holding his hands up to this, he opted for the old "Missed chances cost us" interview.

What about Colchester missing two absolute sitters in the first half, did Tilly forget these?

Agree with the Boothroyd comment, but its getting them results. Earn the right to win first of all, then you can play.

Bit harsh ! Remember it was only Joyce's first competitive match of the season and yes perhaps a little ring rusty. he may have been slow for the first goal but if the rest of the team had actually started to play when the whiste went then perhaps he'd not have had a header to save ! I am not going to comment on the lining up of the wall for the second but if the defence had not tried to play themselves out of trouble instead of putting there foot through the ball and clearing it then there wouldnt have been a free kick in the first place. It was also a very well struck free kick and i'm not sure many would have saved it. Who do you propose that we put in goal for Orient then ???
PLUS I dont hear many people having a go at Scannell for getting in the way of Barney when he was about to score the equaliser !!!

A truly dreadful performance. Summed up our season;

- Soft goals gifted to the opposition
- Constantly giving the ball away in the midfield
- Complete reliance on Barney for goals.

Thought only Malone and Morrison could come out with any credit and possibly Francis too though defensively he was shaky.
Col U not great but effective, exactly what you expect from a Bothroyd team. HAd some good players on the bench too, unlike us. They were physical, yes but not overly so. Wish our players would stop falling over at every opportunity and have a bit more fight.
Couldnt actually fault team selection too much, just maybe Scannell for Jeff who was abysmal and cannot find a blue short for love nor money. Laurent may prefer the wing, but James Walkers performance showed why he didnt start, awful. IF Barney goes, we are down no doubt about it.

Sad to see the same old rubbish spouted by Tilly. We were not the better team, hardly worked the goalie, and Gillespie missed 2 great chances in the first half.

Play like that and we wont get anything on Monday. Very tight at the bottom, hopefully a wake up call to Ron that we desperately need some qualiy up front, a playmaker in the centre and a strong centre back like the big black fella Col U had. Ugly yes but effective, rather than taking 3 touches and then losing the ball like our defenders.

Thought it was a close and scrappy game, not much good football on show. I'd say we created the better chances but Colchester defended better than us and killed us during 10 bad minutes at the start of the 2nd half. That was the difference. Thought the team selection was wrong, we lacked creativity with no wingers in the midfield and Barnard and Laurent got no service. I think people are being harsh on Joyce, first goal Francis (I think) lost the ball and they punished us. 2nd goal was a good free-kick after we'd given the ball away again. How on earth did Francis get MoTM? I think Malone and Grant were our only two impressive players. Atmoshpere was disappointing.

Joyce, Grant, McCormack and Laurent were all awful. McCormack seemed to care only when we were 2 down. Back four were solid, JFC was class in midfield and have no idea why he was subbed rather than Grant. Barnard must be getting ****ed off having to deal with crap lumped up to him.

I thought our team selection was a joke,it took tilly 60 minutes to realise what every blues fan knew from the start that laurent should have been on the right, we were far to negative and we made it easy for them in the 1st half cos we had no width at all grant seemed looked lost most of the time jeff and macca ran about alot but did nothing and moussa cut in every time and made it easy for them,we would have had more luck if we had krusty the clown in goal and not joyce but morrison looked really good.

Not harsh at all, he plays competitively for the reserves weekly, he also goes through the same warmup procedure Mildy does. If ring rustiness is an excuse he shouldn't be in the team. I agree that the rest of the team are equally responsible that Col Ewe shouldn't have got in those positions but Ring Rusty is not an acceptable excuse. As for who i'd play v Orient, i'd play Bentley!
As for the scannell comment, he hasn't got eyes in the back of his head and therefore would have seen Barney and the fact they both went for it would suggest that Barney didn't call for it either!
