Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-1 Rochdale

from their board;

ery much a case of two points dropped. Rodney missed a couple of great chances, yet again we are so risk averse in the final third it’s just bizarre. Subs were negative and then too late. Jim just looks like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Southend get fantastic support we can only dream of, but my oh my their ground is getting so bad now and their team is the worst Southend team I’ve ever seen.
It's come to something when a Rochdale fan tells us how bad our ground is. Even Rochdale have managed to redevelop their ground to a decent level compared to what it once was.
Still I'm sure it won't be long before our plans for redevelopment will be revealed.

Let’s be honest we were pretty sh*t today and Rochdale could comfortably have been 3up by half time had Rodney taken his two other very clear cut chances.

Sadly Bridge looks like his legs have gone, couldn’t beat or defend his man and really looked like he couldn’t move very well, he made it feel like we only had 10 men. Is he still unwell?

Husin is another one who seems to just be existing rather than participating. A couple of nice touches / passes but also seems to have lost his spark which is what we all loved, and it’s hard to see what he offers to the team currently?

Goodliffe & Coker looked a bit uncomfortable at times and before the changes the rest looked average.

I think walker could feel hard done by being dropped and I’d expect us to revert to Tuesdays formation / line up for this coming Tuesday. I don’t think we deserved to lose but I don’t think aside from 20 mins at the end we deserved much! I think KM tried to show how clever and flexible he is but just ended up being served another dose of dross!

The boos at the subs were for Kendall going early. He isn’t blessed with the most talent but he runs and runs and created panic in their defence first half. Appreciate Kev says it’s a squad game but bet you any money we don’t see Parillon, Walker or Golding start on Tuesday.

As for Rochdale, I wasn’t that impressed. That’s two points lost for me as showed what we are capable of but once again it was all too late.

Big night Tuesday with Halifax playing Rochdale

Really, I thought they oozed class and but for some poor shooting would have been out of sight. They passed the ball and controlled the match for long periods.

I thought Kendall wasted several pretty good opportunities in the first half. We were creating, but lacked quality in the box to finish - similar to Rochdale.

Either side could've won it - so a draw probably just about a fair result, but wouldn't surprise me if we edged the stats like shots, corners etc. So I'd disagree that we only did anything in the last 20 mins - we stepped it up during that period, but we were more than in the game for the other 70 mins.

Was you sitting in the East Reds. There was a guy shouting second ball at the top of his lungs. I'm hoping if he's back Tuesday he learns another footballing phrase to go with his newly acquired but overused repertoires

Sound like a chap behind me in the West Stand who was either shouting for our player to shoot every time they got within 40 yards of the opposition goal or couldn't understand why a player may need to play a backwards pass when they were surrounded by three opposition players

What about our poor shooting in the first half?

Half time highlights from Dazn showed 6 highlights for us versus 3 for Rochdale. It wasn't a one sided half, but if it was, it was in our favour.

I was disappointed the line up was changed before the game and I think it was far from an amazing performance, we once again rode our luck at times.

I think a draw was a fair result in the end. LCP really impressed me but sad that Maher won’t be starting him any time soon by the sounds of it.

Another really good game to watch at the Hall. Both teams had trouble finishing or even cueing it up properly to finish. They looked good with their posession football, but never really attacked our box too much, reminded me of a Maher team before Xmas. Their centre forward always looked to get it and turn around to lay it back to midfielders, how about that.

With all their timewasting, diving, conning the ref they looked like a northern Borehamwood of 2yrs ago. Talk about trying to slow the game down after their goal, i was after a refund. Then we woke up, the underperformers left the pitch and in exchange came fresh legs and minds and a desire to get it and go.
The Bonne goal, sorry own goal, that was hilarious and cue heaps of bodies all over the W block as we couldn't believe our luck.

It's funny, i notice a massive will to win in the stands during games and frustation and anger if we are losing, much more than any other season i can think of over 50yrs. Who put the 10p in them lot?

A win on Tuesday will have us breathing down the neck of the playoffs. Altrincham must implode sooner or later and when they do, we'll be there waiting. Aldershot then, PLEASE can we just shoot straight on Tuesday? I went to the away game and never before have i seen such a 1sided draw.

One more point before i go, Nick Hayes doesnt always seem to come off his line and collect the aerial stuff in the box, yet he's good at it when he does, bit strange?

Always interesting to read the post match threads and differing views. To be honest I wasn’t surprised by the starting line up and understood the need for the extra man in midfield …. though Coker didn’t have his strongest game we weren’t overrun. Their goal was harsh on us I think and everyone watched to see how Kev and the players would react.

When the subs came they made an instant impact. Bonne was fired up and just what we needed. Walker could run at a tired defence and KAF provided energy & urgency Husin and Coker had lacked. But for me, LCP was brilliant. Great skill on the ball, attack minded and scared the Rochdale back line ****less. Isn’t it great to finally have game changers lining up on the bench??

Again with better finishing we’d have nicked that & we’re creating chances (let’s call that a positive). Kendall was guilty today of not pulling the trigger early / just running over the ball at times. Walker might’ve done better with his shot late on. But hey, we move on to Tuesday and hopefully another win under the lights.

I have, as many will recall, suggested we have a dedicated area in the away area where “fans” can go and direct whatever bile they wish at our players and management team. This recognises that despite their claimed dismay they keep turning up..They will then feel at home

No it was the sequencing of the subs and some boo boys thought a forward was being replaced by a midfielder- which of course wasn’t the case…

Comments from the Rochdale fans forum:

Didn't see the game today so relying on my mates report driving back. He says that we were the better team by some distance for about 70 minutes...until they made a triple substitution, and Jim looked puzzled. They then pressed our midfield and defence, and we sat back looking increasingly nervous and making comedy errors. Our subs were (once again) like for like and too late.
The 90th minute introduction of Henderson (when we had missed several chances that he would eat for breakfast) is disrespectful to our leading goalscorer.

He went on to say that Southend were not far off being hopeless, yet could easily have won it towards the end due to our nervousness.
Two poor teams that aren’t going anywhere soon.

Contrary to most views, I thought we edged it. A draw probably fair, but if anyone deserved the 3 points it would have been us.

I was encouraged by our press today. I remember in the first few games of the season (incl with Cardwell), we were going individually, but today it was as a unit.

First half, Coker and Kendall were both poor with the ball, but they ran hard as part of the press. Hopper and Noor a bit better, Noor creating a few good chances (one for Kendall that he fell over, and one for Gus but he missed his header altogether). We also had a few other decent chances or positions. Rochdale scored from a poor clearance and then the cross in I think Ralph did well to get to it first, but he headed it straight into the danger zone. Rochdale then had another sitter. Nothing else though.

Second half Rochdale were on top for 20 mins, possibly another chance went begging when the lad who spooned over in the first half had a really heavy touch. Then the treble sub and we had enough chances to win 2 games. Aside from the goal, Gus had one off the line. Walker missed narrowly at the end and had a volley a minute or two before which he brought down instead and was tackled. And that one was from a fantastic run and cross by LCP - who managed 3 shots in his 15 mins. The third of those was following a collymore style driving run into the box.

Good game.
