BRITT Assombalonga’s early header handed Southend United their first win of the season this afternoon, as they saw Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 at Roots Hall.

1st half I was quite shocked how impressed I was as I didn't expect us to play that well. No particular player really stood out but it was a really Good team effort especially Tomlins partnership with the impressive Watford loanee who's name I can't spell. I also thought creswell was solid a the back!

2nd half though we looked nervous and a bit scared but we still plugged away. Spicer should have taken one of his two very good chances to take some of the pressure off but unfortunately didn't. Towards the last 20 mins the game was crying out or changes in midfield as Leonard in particular was knackered but we didn't really have anyone to come on who cold replace him without weakening the team.

Great to get the first win on the board and a really good result but let's face it with this current squad we will struggle without more numbers and more options on the bench. In the strikers department we seem ok what with freddy being back soon, as we do in defence so it's really just midfield we need reinforcements. I know we have Martin to come back but we need another centre mid and another winger at the minimum.

On to Tuesday's game, hopefully we can carry on and get another win!

First half we played some good stuff! Second we should of taken the chances! Looking at their defence Eastwood will enjoy this season me thinks

Very impressed with Tomlin and Assombalongalonga particularly first half. Belford had next to nothing to do and a solid back 4 meant Wycombe rarely threatened. Pick of the back 4 was Cresswell by the way who I thought was outstanding.

Not my favourite player but like his comitment so IMHO 'awful' is very harsh !

He cannot trap a bag of sand, cannot pass to a blue shirt. It's all well and good being committed but that becomes slightly moot when you suffer from lack of technical ability. I know we're not not exactly spoiltfor choice, but hr really is a deadweight IMO.

I'll echo much of the previous comment on here.

Belford - 7. Claimed the ball well when asked under pressure.
Clohessy - 7. Reliable enough at the back as usual, put over a couple of good balls.
Phillips - 6. Not quite at his imperious best, got turned a couple of times, but far from a bad performance.
Cresswell - 8. Won headers, defended well in the box.
Prosser - 6.5. Not his worst performance by far, but he has a habit of going absent and not reacting quick enough when people run at him - still our most likely to hoof, but did get in a couple of good tackles.
Timlin - 6.5. Industrious and showing a bit more composure, couple of silly passes as usual, but really good work rate.
Leonard - 6. No real stand-out moments from him good or bad for me- he needs more experience to be able to impose himself on the game.
Hurst - 7. Put some great crosses in before he was forced to come off - hope it's not too serious, although when he came off he said that he couldn't see anything out of his right eye - wish him a speedy recovery.
Spicer - 7.5. Battled well in midfield, took some shots - needs to get his shooting boots on, but good performance.
Tomlin -8.5. Ran hard all game, superb control - every time the ball came to him he seemed to keep it and move it on - no random bouncing off his shins - really good game, can't be long before he opens his account.
Assombalonga - 9. Brilliant energy, chased everything, don't know how he didn't win more free kicks the way he was being pulled about, showed some lovely bits of skill - looks a real class player and I hope we can hold on to him for a lot longer.

Straker - 7.5. Little bit slow, and obviously playing out of his natural position, but adapted well and put in a good shift - very surprised to be honest, as pre-season I though he looked awful, pleased to see he can play.
Harris - not on long enough to score really, he did have one very weak shot and bustled round their defence a bit.

Ref - 2. Very poor display indeed - refused to give us anything despite Doherty constantly demonstrating his great and abiding love for Assombalonga by hugging him tight at every opportunity. He even prevented Assombolonga from jumping for a header by the simple method of putting his hand on his head and holding him down (Doherty, not the ref, although I wouldn't have been surprised.) If this is now allowed, perhaps it's something out centre backs should consider.

TBV - 9 sang throughout, great support lads.

We dominated the first half, then the first 5-10 minutes of the second. Things got a bit scrappy for the next half an hour, and then we were back on top for the last 10 minutes. Quite a lot of good passing football, very little aimless direct passing, some great touches from all out lads. Maybe not the best game, but 3 points well won and deserved.

Spicer is a very classy player IMO, thought he was excellent today (although he should have scored at least one...).

Assombalonga looks very handy. Very good strikers finish for the goal, reacted very quickly to score (and his finish after he had strayed offside wasn't shabby either) and a few quality touchers here and there. His partnership with Tomlin shows great promise, i just wish Tomlin offered a bit more of a goal threat. Like Assombalonga he has a very good touch and looks very good with the ball at his feet and he offers us a good outlet.

Great to keep a clean sheet, although i thought Wycombe looked very poor for the majority of the game and we weren't particularly threatened.

7 or everyone, except 8 for Assombalonga.

Would like to see Tomlin out wide when Freddy is fit. Doesnt look like scoring but has pace and a good touch.
Thought we defended really well, especially Prosser and Cresswell who were both excellent and Belford was solid too.
Midfield worked well first half but not so second half, sat back too much. Leonard and Straker essentially 2 full backs and it showed. Spicer was excellent but shouldve scored at least one, but if he keeps getting in those positions he will get a few.
Impressed with Britt up top, Luggy must already be thinking of extending his loan. Gave their back 4 a real hard time. Think Freddy could really profit alongside him.

All in all a pleasing win but the lack of bodies on the bench, especially in midfield showed. Hopefully Martin and Hurst arent too badly injured and can be back for this weeks games.

Timlin is awful

Very good performance first half and Timlin was key to that. Worked so hard and the rest followed suit. Disappointing on the ball at times when trying to be too cute but made up for that by chasing down and trying to win the ball...that'll do for starters! Pleased with that side of his game - especially considering how long he was out for.

Belford 7 Not much to do, most of the time looked convincing
Clohessy 7 Not his best performance but did nothing wrong
Cresswell 8 Won every header and was solid at the back, and threatening at set pieces
Phillips 6 Bit shakey at times, but never dangerously so
Prosser 5 Hoofed it and dived into tackles needlessly
Leonard 6 Didn't really influence the game at all
Spicer 8 Several good chances that he maybe should've scored, but worked hard
Timlin 7 Worked hard in the middle and was everywhere, some good challenges
Hurst 6 The odd good cross but lost possession needlessly, didn't have long
Tomlin 8 Pacey and threatening, should've shot late on but did well
Assombalonga 9 Terrified them with his pace and got on the end of as much as he could
Subs
Straker 7 Got forward well, could tell he was out of position but that's to be expected
Harris 6 Wasn't on for long but pressured well

Ref 4 Shockingly inconsistent, don't understand how he could go from not giving a foul until the linesman flagged to then booking Timlin without consulting the linesman

The first half produced many positives for me and maybe the one negative being the game plan wasn't varied enough. Good performances though and I was entertained. The second half was less pretty, more gritty, but they persevered and I am convinced were deserving of their win. Wycombe lacked mobility, penetration and idea.

Belford 6 - nothing to do really. I think it was well into the second half before he rolled a ball out.

Clohessey 6.5 - stuck to his game. Got forward. Crosses a bit predictable to far post where we rarely had anyone. solid.

Phillips 7 - No nonsense, no fuss. Did what he had to do with composure.

Cresswell 7.5 - Solid. Good reader of the game. worked hard.

Prosser 6.5 - Did his defensive job without problems but lacks a little supporting forward. steady.

Spicer 6 - Not awe struck by him. Missed a couple of opportunities but theres something that makes me feel the best is yet to come.

Timlin 5 - Needs to work on his temperament I applaud his willingness to tackle back and break up play but it gets eratic especially after he makes a gaff. More in him I am sure. Just needs to find it.

Hurst N/A - Not really sure I saw enough of him to rate him before he went off. May have done more that I did not spot but we will wait and see on this fellow.

Leonard 4 - Not at the races for me. I am positive he will be an asset but right now , certainly today, I was unsure why they kept him on.

Tomlin 7 - Busy, industrious, nice touch. Could develop into a really good acquisition but needs to compose in front of goal. Again, more to come I am sure.

Assombalonga 7.5 - MOM Same work and touch as Tomlin for me but the goal edges it.

Subs
Straker 5 - The boy has it in him but he needs a couple of things to go right to give him the confidence. Give him time.

Harris N/A - Too little time to earn rating but he should have done more with the effort he had. Someone of his calibre, fresh off the bench or not, should make the keeper sweat.

Spicer had a decent game and should have scored at least two. I think he keeps the ball well, gets stuck in and works hard but when we need a little bit of quality from him it seems as though he doesn't have the belief in himself to carry it off which is a shame and I hope the more he plays the more important a role he can play.

Front two look good together and it's nice to hear Sturrock say how keen Assambalonga is in training and is always asking questions.

Prosser also had a good first half, especially the improvement on the ball. Hope he realises he doesn't have to hit it long into channels all the time and in Tomlin he has a willing runner who'll show for a ball to feet. Seemed to think more today when in possession and that stood out for me.

Without exaggerating, he must of completed about 2-3 passes all afternoon. A couple of times we broke on the counter attack & his inaccurate passing let us down. Even when in space, with time, he was managing to pass to the opposition. I can't see what he offers going forward?

He makes himself look busy, but I can't see what else he brings to the table. And that's not based solely on today's showing.
