We do seem to be playing better away from home at the moment, after the early goal today I thought we'd really kick on and punish another really poor team.

Was good to have a decent look at Jarvis and I was pretty impressed, very quick and got himself stuck in, a good match for their pacey number 5.

Great cross from Hall for Corr's goal, hope his injury isn't too serious and he was only taken off as a precaution.

A game changed by two substitutions either side of half-time.
First matchwinner Barry Corr got injured and we started to struggle to hold the ball up; secondly Lincoln City took off the worst professional footballer to have made a career out of football and all of a sudden started to look more threatening.

Ratings

Morris 6 - did everything that was asked of him, which was nothing
Clohessy 7
Gilbert 6.5
Mohsni 7
Barker 6.5
Grant 7
Timlin 7
Simpson 7
Hall 7
Corr 8 - its only in his absence will his contributions likely be recognised
Sturrock 7

Subs
Jarvis 5.5
Crawford 6.5
Soares 5.5

Broughton 9 - his most effective performance for Southend.

Thanks John - good work on getting the site back online!

Todays game... as Sturrock said on the radio, we are a 10 minute side! First half wasnt too bad, but we tried to force the issue too often for me. Too quick in the pass, too willing to hit it long and nobody put their foot on the ball after we scored.

And PS was spot on with Grant as I watched him more closely today and he is everywhere - which yea, fans love, but tactically its awful. He goes chasing for balls that he just doesnt need to. Sure its great commitment etc, but it pulls us all out of shape. So thats something to either work on with Granty, or build players around him to compensate.

Great goal by Corr too - perhaps he should have had a second with a header from further out, but nobody should be too harsh on him with 5 in 8. Thats a decent return for 'an offcast that nobody wants'. Keep it up Barry!

Second half we just invited Lincoln on and fair play - they took the invite and really pressed us all over the pitch. I think they will be bitterly disappointed to not get at least a point, but thankfully we held on. Good to hear that Sturrock was raging post match and actually didnt tell the players what he thought as he said the 'time wasnt right', but he was far from happy.

Final mention before the ratings for Mohsni. Was disappointed in him today - not so much his performance, but his niggly off the ball antics. He was digging Broughton every chance he got (sly little elbow or barge etc) and I saw him deliberately stand on Hutchinsons heel totally off the ball - quite vindictive and whilst some fans may be like *rrrrrrrraaaarrrr GO MOSHNI- F**K 'IM UP!* etc... its not good. Its pretty poor when you have to resort to that and sooner or later it will bite you on the arse. Cut it out fella.

Morris - 7 - Assured when needed to be, no real dramas or spectacular saves
Clohessy - 7 - Really like him, some quality balls into the box when getting forward.
Mohsni - 5 - Loses a point for the above mentioned antics, but was generally solid - though still trying to win balls that just arent winnable
Barker - 6 - Solid enough from the skipper and he concentrated on defending first and foremost
Gilbert - 5 - Pretty anonymous, with some woeful delivery at times
Simpson - 6 - Struggled to get involved
Grant - 7 - Still a class above most out on the pitch, but PS is right, he goes chasing shadows when (like Mohsni) he has no right or chance to win the ball, leaving the midfield exposed
Timlin - 8 - Was about the pick for me today. Good feet, good energy, gets stuck in
Hall - 7 - Flatters to deceive at times. Extra point for being the only one first half who showed any imagination and for a peach of a ball in the 3rd minute
Corr - 7 - Usual hard working performance and took his goal well. Probably should have got a 2nd.
Sturrock - 5 - Not the best from the Son today. I still think he is better than fans are prepared to give him credit for, but he needs a particular kind of service. Probably better suited to a lone role away from home, where he will have the time and space to get on the ball.

SUBS:

Jarvis - 6 - Looked strong and quick, but ultimately didnt have a decent chance on goal - a criticism easily banded about for Sturrock by fans...
Crawford - 6 - Looked very good in spells too - again though, does his best work outside of the box.
Soares - 5 - Just dont see what he has at all. Didnt really get involved either.

Dont usually mention, but well done to the Blue Voice today. Was very touching to hear "Paul Sturrocks Barmy Army" chanted around the ground at times in the 1st half and not a whisper of "Steve Tilson" in amongst it (that I could hear from those who sang in the S.Upper). Sounded like an 'acceptance' chant as I believe its the first time its been sung with gusto at Roots Hall? Well done anyway.

Im really confused tonite. Im pleased with the win and at last we seem to be grinding out results that mayb last season we would have lost. At times today we played really well and the passing was good, but we still seem to be lacking something. I look at our team, gilbert, simpson, grant, timlin, corr, sturrock, hall etc are all really good league two players yet we still seem to be struggling to kill games off. in saying that we are in touchin distance of the top five and had we been offered that at the start of the season we would have taken that and with sturrocks experience i think we are moving in the right direction and the next four games will tell us much about the team. today was good, morris looked very solid and the second half save from the free kick was top draw, defence a little shakey at times but held firm in the end, midfield worked hard and created some dcent chances and then upfront cor excellant until he went off, sturrock usual hard working and some good link up play and then jarvis and crawford looked to be positive and something different. score wise a mixture of 6s, 7s and 8s.

Difficult to rate today's performance, really... First half, we were up against possible one of the worst sides I've seen. Aimless with the ball and catastrophic without it, Lincoln played to our every whim. Broughton's merely a lump to aim balls at, Facey is the size of three regular wingers and the left back Anderson, well, the fact he's played for Fulham in the Europa League is extraordinary. Second half we really did miss Corr's contribution in holding the ball up, and Sturrock's departure left us with next to nothing to aim for which caused a great deal of pressure to mount on the defence.

Fully agree with Sturrock/Pboreham's comments about Grant, and today Albert Jarrett proved exactly why. He soon learnt that cutting inside, into the space that Grant would occupy if he was actually in position, caused us no end of trouble and he wreaked havoc in front of a defence struggling to pick him up. Timlin did his best, but he also had to deal with Hutchinson running in from a wide angle. Gilbert gave his most solid performance for us today that I've seen, although he possibly could've played more centrally to compensate for Jarrett cutting in. Jarrett, by the way, is the single most dangerous player with the ball at his feet I've seen so far this season, and I don't expect to see much better... At times he was unplayable.

Corr and Sturrock, while they were on the field together, were brilliant. Corr leads the line brilliantly with great mobility for a big man, while Sturrock's link up play is a joy to behold for a frontman at times. He was unlucky when he was put through on goal in the second half, as it just wouldn't sit for him to strike properly... Not to mention the knock he picked up after 15/20 minutes. Clohessy signalled that he probably should be subbed, and then Corr picked up his knock, which was a great shame.

Unfortunately, I also have to echo the comments regarding Moshni. Yes, he was great at times today, but his complete lack of positioning, discipline and tactical nous mean he's just as much a liability. Perfect example today was, with 10 minutes on the clock and hanging on to the three points, he goes off on a maze up 60 yards off the pitch which, yes, is fantastic to watch, but when he gets challenged and loses the ball, we're left defending a rapid counter attack with our quicker centre back sprawled along the floor of the opposition half arguing with an opponent. He really can be a top, top player... especially at this level, but he's far from the finished article. I understand a Villa scout was amongst the crowd today to watch him, and I dare say his report will be mixed.

Onto the ratings, anyway...

Morris - 6 - Not an awful lot to do at all, really.
Clohessy - 7 - Continues to impress me. One of the most dependable players we have at the moment...
Barker - 7 - As above
Mosni - 6.5 - Great skills, great command, **** poor discipline.
Gilbert - 6.5 - Solid, yet could've perhaps done better to get closer to Jarrett.
Timlin - 8 - Stood out for me today, kept possession well while shielding the back four.
Grant - 6 - Totally committed, which is both a positive and negative.
Simpson - 6 - Largely quiet, largely wasted on the right.
Hall - 7 - Really taking to Hall. Scannell, but quicker and trickier.
Corr - 8 - Not bad for the worst player seen at this level.
Sturrock - 7.5 - Another intelligent display.

Subs

Jarvis - 7 - Fantastic layoff in the second to put hall through, but isn't quite there. Needs to read the line a bit better, but this will come when he knows when to expect the ball. Also understand we'll try to extend the loan as soon as possible.
Crawford - 7 - Looked bright when he came on and done just what I expected him to. Total effort, not an amazing amount of ability, but that's not to be sniffed at.
Soares - 5 - Brought on intentionally to isolate Jarrett. Somehow managed to make him look better.

three points is great. Sturrocks comments on the radio were great- spot on- we were poor, gave away too many free kicks which almost lost us the game. ,From an entertainment perspective the best thing Was Moshni's run --He didn't have a clue where he where going and his 'fight'. Five minutes into the match 1-0 up, I didn't think it would be another 80 mins until we did something exciting. But all said and done, three points is three points.

I agree, we should have killed that game off first half, but because we didnt the second half Lincoln gave it a good go and could have drawn level.

We dont look particularly creative or threatening when attacking at the moment either.

Up front Corr is doing what he is there to do, thought Sturrock really didnt contribute anything today. Jarvis I was totally underwhelmed by, he is quick but didnt seem to do much with it, really looked his age out there. Crawford however looked hungry and made more of an impact than the rest of the strikers and Id like to see him start with Corr.

OVerall an average performance against a poor Lincoln side, but its another 3 points and cant complain at that!

Onto .
he also gave away a senseless freekick that they hit the bar from, and could have been sent off right at the end . But I still love him !

Totally agree, he was awesome. I was surprised it was him when i found out as he was quite highly rated at Norwich I believe. Ben Hutchinson too... That's a career going down the toilet.

Glad to have 3 points but the game was not worth rating!
We certainly missed Corr, when he went off the game changed. I am unsure about the other forwards, Sturrock is just not up to it. Jarvis, will give him benefit of doubt at the moment, Crawford again not sure yet. I think it shows we have numbers but no depth.
Morris - 6
Clohessy - 6
Barker - 6
Mohsni - 5 he does worry me sand needs to sort out the discipline
Gilbert - 6
Simpson - 6
Grant - 6 not as effective this game
Timlin - 7
Hall - 7
Corr - 8 getting better but is injury prone
Sturrock - 5 tried but is clearly not up to it.
Crawford - 5
Soares - 5
Jarvis - 5

The no 17, Jarrett, was probably one of the best and trickiest lower league players I have seen for ages.

What is he doing playing for such a poor team ?

Not sure. The main question mark for me would be his end product. He looked like he could go past players for fun, but I'm struggling to recall it ever leading to anything - a shot, a cross, a pass.

By contrast Ryan Hall didn't look as tricky with the ball at his feet, but looked a far more likely source for goals.

Did Laurent get signed by Coventry?
