Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Solihull Moors

As I'm over, I feel compelled to post a response. Well, the weathers been great since I've been here. Cherish every Southend game I can attend. Being in a large crowd with like minded people, fans who have gravitated to the mighty "Shrimpers" for their own reasons. As the dynamics of this level have evolved, I never felt over the last 3 seasons that we were good enough to get out of this league.

If you are a long time fan (1969 for me) then there have been many times when you might have questioned your commitment. However, the crowds like yesterday show who we are and how loyal we are. This must continue to get us promoted in the future.

For me, any frustration like the last 2 games must be seen through the prism of the last 5 years. Ron, unpaid players and staff, embargo, unpaid taxes, new stadium, Roots Hall, being wound up, poor managers, new owners, 5 year plan, sustainability, poor practice facilities, the list goes on.

It would be wrong to brush these issues aside and feel that they didn't have a significant impact on our current situation.

I urge all SUFC fans to continue to get behind the team and coaching staff. It's obvious that it's not good enough.

I also, clearly see next season as our first time in many years to recruit, construct and prepare a team that will be good enough to push for promotion. KM, and the coaching staff deserves that opportunity and have my full support.

Looking forward to the Braintree game, who would have thought that would ever be a derby game.

While I'm still firmly of the opinion that its a player issue, for example would solihull have swapped any of their team for ours...no way.
The one thing I will heavily criticise is the signing of hopper....brings nothing to the table other than running around.
Missed a header from 4 yards today....and held the ball up twice I believe.
We need double figures in terms of signings in the summer. Move on who we can. Literally any player other Parillon and maybe Taylor...get rid. Not good enough.
That cross was a bullet. He had to dive full length.

This. Absolutely!

Which then leads me to ask the following questions:

How can you get a team to be effective if you keep asking them to do things that are not their strengths?
For example:

Bonne can hold up a ball beautifully and has intelligence in his play. Not prolific, but will play others in. So how on earth can he have a hope of scoring/assisting by being stuck out on the RW?
How can leading goalscoring RWB Gus be effective in the back 4, when his defending is questionable and his best attribute is out wide and ghosting into the box unseen? (where Bonne has been sent to cover)
How can we nullify a good central attacking midfielder (Parillion) - easy, send him out to the left wing where he is ineffective.
Asking KAF to play central midfield, where he has plenty of energy, but not the precision to start off a strong onslaught attack consistently!

For me there are 2 big issues going on.
1) Kev has only got one set of tactics, and these only work if you play with pace and intent. We do not do this! Whether that is because the players we have arent capable of this, or they are not being allowed to play to their strengths isnt totally clear. I suspect its a bit of both.

2) We dont have a creative enough midfield to open sides up, as as a result we play the safe posession game, which is both predictable and boring to watch. We play defensively, but we arent really good enough to stop sides from scoring. And because goal scoring from across the pitch has been a problem for a long time, it leaves us vunerable to losing to teams like Solihull!

There was absolutely nothing Hayes could have done about that goal yesterday

.
I agree with many of your points and Maher undoubtedly got it wrong yesterday.

I'd argue the change in shape recently (before yesterday) hadn't necessarily been a bad one. The three in midfield allowed Parillon free reign to roam and attack and while it asked more of GSM defensively it didn't restrict him from getting into attacking areas. The system we deployed yesterday wasn't negative by any means but as said it didn't suit the players who changed position at all.

I'm sure Maher is aware of the lack of creativity and penetration in midfield hence why Parillon was signed. It wasn't as big an issue when we had reliable service from wide and a goalscorer in Cardwell but without that our lack of goals from midfield is a much bigger issue.

A bigger problem for me is this squad has been built for 3-5-2, which was heavily reliant on an in-form Bridge. Without him we don't have anyone else who can attack adequately from left wing-back. I'm all for a change to 4-3-3 (especially if Gus leaves in the summer) but you need actual wingers to make it effective and we don't have any. The management team need to decide on a favoured system going forwards and the recruitment team need to build a squad for it.

We clearly don't have the personnel to win games by scoring 2 or 3 goals regularly so for now I'd like to see a return to the 3 at the back with Ralph at wing-back. We've kept 1 clean sheet in the last 14, along with our lack of goals that's no recipe for success. Our best hope of extending the season is keeping it tight at the back and nicking a goal here and there. Hopefully Kendall is fit enough to start from now and GSM has a few more left in him.

No no and a big no, Ralph as a Left wing back, no fcuking way, Braintree and Ebbsfleet would be delighted to have Ralph as LWB, as it’s give their RB a easy game to defend!!

3-5-2 has been as boring as s…. All season. When we went 4 at the back v Altringham the atmosphere was transformed. Points per game may be similar but if you want to empty the ground revert to 3 centre halfs. I’ve no idea why Maher decided to tinker with the midfield 3 of Morton Kaf and Parillion. Presumably to squeeze Husin back in or because we didn’t have another fit striker.. ? Losing Kendall has been a blow, but Walker should have been able to step up .
Morton looked like he had been told not to attempt anything that might lose the ball

Frustrated - Southend United defender Harry Taylor (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United defender Harry Taylor was left ruing the Shrimpers’ lack of quality in the final third following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Solihull Moors.

Blues were unable to hit the back of the net during a frustrating afternoon at Roots Hall.

And Taylor admitted it had not been good enough.

“We have to look at ourselves and we probably haven’t created enough chances going forward,” said Taylor.

“We’ve got in good areas but just not used the ball well enough.

“Some of the chances we should’ve taken.

"There just wasn’t enough quality from us in the final third and that’s the whole team. It’s set pieces and all of it to be fair.”

Taylor came closest to scoring for the Shrimpers when his shot was pushed wide of the left post by Laurie Walker.

And the 27-year-old thought his shot was destined for the back of the net.

“I thought it was going to be my first goal but I’d rather it landed to someone else to put it in the back of the net,” said Taylor.

“I tried my best but hopefully the next four games we can get some wins and get right up there.”

Except embargoes, players not being paid club being wound up once a month. Even this season has been messed up by these issues.
Next season...purely football on the agenda, then justifiably judge. Its very simple.
Aside from the obvious challenges, there are very strong patterns. Undefeated runs (a lot of draws) and then back to the drawing board, bad substitutions, losing to lower and higher positioned teams consistently, backwards play, very few goals scored... Etc

Again I agree that these issues were tough - I don't think anyone disagrees with you.

But the aforementioned outcomes and actions above remain the same over 3 years.

Just feel there really is nothing to lose by being aggressively attacking the next games. Kendal bonne hopper up front with parillon centrally behind.
343 for me with kaf making himself a pain.
I just don't see the point in only 2 up top and misusing parillon.
Rather lose the next game 4-3 than 1-0 or a bore draw.

Not in Maher's vocab
