Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Solihull Moors

If we are serious about promotion next year the list of who we should retain is short.
Collin, Gus, Taylor, Wind, Parillon, Coker, KAF, Morton.

With our thanks time to release & negotiate exits with the rest. That includes Kev Maher & John Still. I don’t in all honesty know enough about what Bentley, Currie each do from coaching perspective. Promote one of them to manage if they have different style from this utter dross or clean slate needed. Look forward and have Demi as our scouting guy, we don’t need him and Still. Just another paycheck that isn’t delivering value and better invested elsewhere.

Big challenge is payoffs. Many will say we can’t afford it. If we lose 1m for every year in NL, I’d ask can we afford not to? I have little to no faith Kev Maher is the man to lead us back into the football league.

Unfortunately other than Bonne, Waldron, Wood Ralph and a few youth players they are all under contract. So they'll be here next year. I think we exercised an option on Bridge. Keep Ralph

Well done Colchester Utd , a far better team than us and the Cowleys play far better football, are enthusiastic and always looking for a change of plan if the original doesn’t work. Completely the opposite to Kevin Maher that we are stuck with!
Cowley's have done Maher, playing their part and encouraging Hopper to sign to give them more Jan transfer window budget!!

We're stuck with 3 strikers that cant score consistantly and I bet he'll give Bonne a deal, I cant see this issue being resolved soon!

Lots of people who have only posted in recent weeks today and after Boston. Welcome back.

This team (and management?) lacks the necessary mentality. Three years running we have gone on pretty looking runs of form once we are longshot playoff chasers. Every time we get close, we **** ourselves.

The fear was running through those players today. If they can't deal with it, they should sign for clubs with 79 away fans instead.

It interesting as I wasn't there as I am on holiday. You certainly feel less emotionally involved having not been to the game, so while the result is very very disappointing it does seem we loose one game and everyone goes into freefall.

What was the crowd like? For Oldham it really helped us over the line I thought?

This season has not been good enough but I do think the disrupted pre season and inability to sign out primary targets has not helped at all. Play Off now over, but if we are not top 3 by end of October Maher will need to go. Th expectations are rightly very high by all of us.

We are just so inconsistent and don't seem to keep any level of performance from game to game!

Wasn't there today as it was the wife's turn to go with my Son, the lucky people.

I've seen enough games this season though to know exactly how this went, passages of dominating the game with zero end product and a lack of imagination or intensisty to try and create anything.

I said in the match thread, we seem devoid of any leadership on the pitch, those 4 or 5 players you need that will drag the rest of the team along when things aren't going well. This happens from time to time, you just need to be experienced enough to know how to deal with it in real time when it does. We have NO ONE able to do this and we suffer every single time as a result.

Lots of stuff being said about the squad and lack of quality etc, but I bet you anything that if most of these players leave for other clubs they will become very good players there, being intergrated with the sort of players i allude to above. We've just assembled a squad where all the players are the same and we're paying the price for it.

Sadly this failure only lies at the door of the management. Yes, they have not had the ability to sign their #1 targets because of the previous regime, but they have had enough time to start putting it right and they have failed miserably so far.

In summary, IMO we have good players but all lacking in the required characteristics to form a good team and i'm not sure of the management team have the ability to turn things around to stop this type of performance becoming the norm.

****ing frustrating.

Thought Leon looked knackered before being subbed, e.g. Moors had a throw and he didn't have the legs to close down the receiver of the throw - so I get why he was subbed even though he was until that point our best player.

Question - are our training pitches the same size as RH? Seems they're hitting crosses way too long.

A disappointing afternoon but not altogether surprising. The worrying thing is that we are lumbered with the vast majority of this squad due to the contracts that they are on. Same old story a squad full of non goalscorers in every position apart from Gus. To get promotion you usually need to score about 75 goals in a season. How on earth the management team thinks this lot can achieve that is beyond belief. Also whoever judged Hayes to be a decent keeper needs to visit Specsavers. Depression all round at the moment sadly.

I would get rid of all those for start. Then as I say try to negotiate payoffs for others mentioned . Realistically we won’t for all but we need to move on as much dead wood as possible and overhaul this squad to compete at top end next season. Ralph has been a good servant, professional and a nice guy, been here a long time and that’s part of the problem..he’s already peaked, has increasing injury troubles and this may sound harsh but he’s a captain who’s now accepted leading a mediocre group for too long. We need fresh leadership on and off the pitch. Ruthless - Yes Necessary - Yes

Painful watching today, it seemed the players had just met each other before the game, then kept trying to over complicate every pass, walk the ball in the net or attempt to dribble through three players.

Second half watching Taylor, loads of space in front of him but clearly gets a nose bleed if he crosses the half way line and needs to pass sideways.

Are the players not following Maher tactics or are Maher tactics today that terrible, we looked very unbalanced and with an isolated front line, as for the subs?! Have the management and players bottled the playoffs?

Roll on the Essex derby against Braintree

not great today but we aren’t dead yet!

no. 39’s celebration was slightly tragic. i would’ve understood it more had it been a 94th minute winner after we’d been on his back all afternoon. as it was, it came across as the crowning achievement of his whole life.

the only other plausible explanation was that it was borne from a desperation to hear human rather than rodent voices given birmingham’s current plight.
