Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Solihull Moors

That was as pathetic a first half as I can remember, but we responded very well at the start of the second, but Maher’s decisions from then on were honestly absurd. Taking off our only creative player in Leon, and then taking off our only player capable of scoring a goal in Gus.

I’m generally on the fence with Kev but he did himself absolutely no favours today.
Gus was injured

A must win, in front of largest National League gate of the season, up against a team we always beat and who have nothing to play for, game........what could possibly go wrong????
Backed off their player for the goal.........got the impression Hayes feet were stuck to the ground. I should look at that again........but do I really want to? Could have gone on all night without scoring. The up side, I economise a trip back to England in June :Sad:Same as last week , backed off their player and scored . So frustrating to watch

Too many players playing the safe option today. Only Leon prepared to take players on, but without the necessary end product. Once Leon was substituted, there ended any chance of creating anything. Bridge was crowded out and simply doesn't possess the pace to get in behind the full back.

Hopper and Bonne both each missed very good headed chances, but aside from that they offered precious little and the Solihull back line had a relatively easy afternoon.

Best players for me this afternoon were Goodliffe (solid as a rock) and Husin, who never stopped running and gave 100% effort.

Not sure what Hayes was doing for their goal (fluke or not). He seemed to back peddle initially, but then just stopped, maybe thinking the ball was going over the bar. If you're not sure, then at least tip it over the bar! It certainly did nothing to dispel my fears that he's not up to it.

Overall, the most frustrating thing is that whenever we do put a cross over (low or high), I never have any confidence that any of our strikers are going to get on the end of it and stick the ball in the back of the net. Two strikers in the mould of a Dieseruvwe and Ollie Pearce are a must for next season.
Also, other than Gus, there's nobody else who seems to have the knack of being in the right place at the right time. Ollie Coker has that to a certain extent, but for whatever reason, his performance levels have dropped off a cliff since last year.

To lose that was so typically Southend. Home game, a team we’ve beat easily last few times we’ve played them, play off place up for grabs .. and we play like that.
To be fair to Solihull they sussed our game plan (as have others) and packed midfield knowing we’d find it hard to score as we take so long to get it forward. When we got it to Gus on the right they immediately had 2 men on him.

We need a few upgrades in summer and to say thanks for your efforts, but time to move on from some of this squad.

Today we had no urgency and no final product, sums up the season tbh. You have to take your chances it’s really as simple as that.

As for that last corner .. we’re losing 1-0 lads with seconds on the clock .. I know .. let’s try and be clever and play it short. **** sakes.

The problems we saw today were the same problems we've seen most of the season.

We don't have a recognised goal scoring striker. GSM, who I thought was poor today, has us punching above our weight, but take away his goals and we look toothless. We don't exactly help ourselves, poor crossing coupled with poor anticipation leads to frustration. In the first half Morton came forward whipped in a left footed cross from outside the box and neither LCP or Husin gambled or challenged and it went straight out for a goal kick.

I think Kevin will be hurting tonight, you could see his frustration on the sidelines. He hates losing and losing to Solihull will hurt. As someone said on OMT, last weeks last minute equaliser has affected us more than we think. This will be an 'if only' season. If only Bim had stayed a few more months, if only Golding hadn't got injured if only we hadn't signed 'xxxxxx' insert your own name

Solihull and their 79 fans will be happy though, first win away this year (since Boxing Day I think).

A keeper should always have his post covered. Lord only knows what Hayes was thinking while he watched the ball sail past him and into the top corner
He lets things ghost past him EVERY week, you don’t get out on the scrap heap for no reason, ask Hopper?
