Can we get Hendrie back to replace Coker who has been very poor, if not Brown needs to have a word with him to hit a few early crosses into the box instead of keep cutting back and trying to beat his man again, our strikers never know when the cross is coming in at least with White they know its 1 touch then the cross.

Spot on.

There was one in particular in the second half, when we had them on the ropes and he just wouldn't stick it in the danger area.

Two minutes later, Payne whipped an early ball straight in and Barnett should have scored.

Hendrie was on the subs bench for West Ham today.

Not quite sure what some of you were watching. Chesterfield were poor. We should have beaten them. It was one of those games where the wrong team went home with 3 points (bit like us at Shrewsbury). Maybe should have had a penalty, maybe should have done have better with the chances we created, maybe the post should have been an inch further out. Maybe. They never looked like scoring until they did, and you need to ask questions about the amount of room their player found himself in. Disappointing day.

IMO you're not doing Chesterfield justice. They aren't the best I've seen, but they certainly didn't deserve to be on the losing side today.

Our back 5 were kept busy throughout the first half, and I'm still surprised we went into the break level. We had a few scrambled moments, but Worrals miss aside, didn't do a lot in front of goal.

Our midfield 3, Deegan, Wordsworth & Atkinson were useless as individuals & as a unit. No protection for the defence & nothing positive going forward. That's why the Chesterfield attackers, constantly found themselves in acres of space.
I don't want to necessarily make them scapegoats though, as no-one came away from that with much credit.

The stats don't lie either. They had more possession, more chances & more shots on target.

Was that the 1 just before they broke away and scored if so he had a yard on his man to whip a cross in.

You always see possession stats, shots on target, corners etc, one stat we would walk the league by a country mile if there were ways to measure it, and that is the distance and height we kick the ball. I have not seen any side this season who lumps the ball as aimlessly as us, and that my friends, is why we are now sinking down to mid-table, probably to finish around 15th.

This irritates the **** out of me. I've lost count of the times when someone drills the ball into the channels, tight to the touchline, even when it's obvious that no-one will get anywhere near it. If it hasn't worked by the 54th attempt, then try something else, no?

I remember a specifc moment in the second half, where we were pressuring well, Chesterfield were on the backfoot, pinned into their own 18-yard-area...... and John White pretty much leathered it towards the channel & subsequently, Barnett. So there's Barnett, on his own, fairly wide, trying to control this rocket pass from White, which just happened to be about 8ft in the air, whilst being challenged by a defender. Of course, as you'd expect, the move died & so did our momentum.

No, Barnett went off after 80, they scored in the 89th.
But the point made has some "legs", Cokes does try to turn and turn again before the delivery - saying that he does get up and down the sidelines well but needs help on many occasions and the move slows and often wilts.

too many jouneymen seeing out their days on good contracts -

Hunt
Wordsworth
Mooney

add in the ageing Barrat -

and the always confused Degaan

throw in a chancer like Brown ...

Bentley - look at ME going up for a corner

loanees simply trying to catch the eye

Everyone is playing for themselves - aren't they ?

value for money from Barnett
and from Worrall and Atkinson

Payne wants it

BUT the hunger from Chesterfield won it - Granty had it locked down for Crewe -

The real joy on the faces of the young men in red - at the final whistle for us its just another bad game in a long career -

another day another club another pay check -

Can you imagine what a real quality manager could do with the generous football budget at Roots Hall -

the next Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche, Martinez is out there.

If Brown does not deliver - plays off minimum -hes toast

Yes, a young player who a Prem club (albeit West Ham...) have paid £1 million for.
I think we have to be realistic about our chances of having this quality of player on our books for any length of time.

Prem clubs prefer this type of player to be playing Championship level if they go on loan...

That's the whole frustrating thing. He does the hard work, getting up the pitch and into a good position. It's easier. from there, to curl a cross in first time than it is to check back and try to be too clever and too precise.

Just bung it in the danger area and let the forwards do the work.

The lack of midfield creativity is the problem. Payne tried hard but when he is surrounded by 4 defenders due to the distance to 3 defensive midfielders it is never going to work. Which is why Leonard is important as he is worth two of Atkinson Deegan and Wordsworth

Match report: Southend United 0, Chesterfield 1

SOUTHEND United’s stuttering form continued with a dismal 1-0 defeat to struggling Chesterfield at Roots Hall this afternoon.

in fairness don't they have something stupid like 8 defenders out injured, it may be he is all they have left rather than 'oll my god we sent back a player who is sub for a premiership top 6 team- what are we doing'

Post of the day!

Too much tinkering with players and formations, some of Phil's signings have been woeful sorry to say.

we all see things very differently so I will focus on the highlights

Much better than Tuesday ( difficult not to be better)
Didn't tread in dog ***** on way home like Tuesday
The Over 60's walking football at half time - at least we saw someone in a Southend shirt score
It didn't rain dispite the forecast

In fairness Barnet was good as well, and I actually thought Deegan (and I am not a big fan) was good- always giving the defence an option, some decent passing and no stupid tackles.

Didn't understand the subs
Didnt understand what Wordsworth brought to the game- thought we were playing with 10 men

We play the ball slowly and don't score, the opposition break quickly and score- surprise surprise

funny how we all see different things-maybe depends on where we stand/sit

Bit harsh considering this is our first season in this League, and very few expected us to be where we are in the table?. FWIW i'm neither pro or anti Brown, although for a guy of his experience, I must admit I do find his tactics 'odd' at times.

We have the personnel. They are not playing or being played to their preferred tactics. Barnett, is in a long line of strikers that has the goods and is not given the type of ball he thrives on, a cross. We need width and turn up narrow. Brown can still redeem himself but frankly he has to start setting the team up in its favoured style and not the mistaken way he has sent them out of late. Its not over but it will be very soon without some positive adaptions to the playing style.
