Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Burton Albion

Argh, even after a night of trying to get over it, I'm still wounded at a stolen point last night. We were the better team for the entire game, but once again failing to capitalise on our dominance has cost us. Timlin blows too hot and cold in a game, it was a terrible pass to Spicer for the red, not that it exonerates Spicer, on that surface, in those condition he should've conceded posession not lunged in like that, deserved red. Timlin is trying too hard to find his form, it doesn't help that Spicer is non-existant most of the time and he's trying to do the work of two midfield men, I wonder if the team even noticed Spicer's absense last night. Timlin needs to start making the simple passes, rather than alsways looking for the match winning defence splitting pass, and the lunge for the match winning free kick was unessecary too, you can't go to ground to tackle someone from behind, what was he thinking.

Bentley 7: Did well, one hairy moment, one good save, solid for the remainder, and nice to now know we have a reliable understudy, and someone that can actually challenge for the no.1 shirt.

Clohessy 6: Struggled defensively last night, a few times the LW seemed to get pass Sean with a little too much ease. Did well going forward though.
Barker 7: Been really critical of Barks lately, but last night was a much better performance from him
Cresswell 7.5: Solid & commanding won everything in the air.
Prosser 7.5: Another solid performance from Prosser, his distribution is improving too, on form our second best defender this season.

Martin 6.5: Showed flashes of what he can do, and worked hard for the team, still drifts out the game a bit too much.
Spicer 3: Barely does much as it it, but tonight Mr Anonymous made sure he was noticed. Cowardly tackle.
Timlin 5: Tries hard, wins tackles, then loses the ball with too many hollywood passes - needs to start doing the simple things, killed Spicer with a hospital ball, then lost possession and lunged in for the winning free kick. Needs a solid partner, but it won't happen until we get the embargo lifted, and trust me, there is an embargo in place.
Hurst 7: Our best midfielder, showed a great touch, awareness and skill last night, just a shame his set pieces weren't up to scratch.

Eastwood 7: Doubt he expected to play 90 minutes last night, let alone 80 of them in midfield. Worked hard, won some important defensive headers, just a yard of the pace as a striker though.
Assombalonga 8: Jesus, this boy can run. Worked the channels excellently, chased everything. A lone striker is one of the most demanding roles in football, but he coped excellently, and never stopped working with 11 men and a striking partner, we would of surely benefitted from him last night.

With the injuries and suspensions we have this embargo is killing us, with Leonard pulling his Hammy to add to the list it really puts us under pressure, especially in the middle. The only saving grace is it's Barnet next. Wouldn't be surpised to see Hurst play a more central role with perhaps Straker on the left and Martin right. The only other real alternative, is Eastwood CM again with Benyon up top. It really is a case of square pegs in round holes at the moment. Ron - sort that embargo it's killing us!

Also GET HALL back...the Blackpool move has fallen through, he's our player, we are desperate for midfield players, a Hall with a 'not quite right head' is still equal to most wide men in this league.

I've never read the ratings before and had 100% same opinion. The Timlin one in particular was exactly what I wrote on a previous thread. Tries hard but then just does these silly Scholes passes.

To anyone thinking Bentley should have saved the freekick, may be he should, maybe he should't - that is an opinion. BUT the freekick went straight through the wall as Hurst was more woried about the ball being played to the left rather than standing firm in the wall . Had he been where he was meant to be, standing up straight in the wall (how difficult is that !) the ball would ahve gone straight at him . I don't think it was lucky, I think their guy meant it . To me if you are going to attach blame then it goes to Hurst for leaving a hole, not Bentley for not saving it

I havent seen it, but the wall is the keepers responsibility....

we keep winning one game and then throwing the next one away, with this form its mid-table for us and with one shot on target i think we are set for mid-table at best or just outside the play-offs unless we add the numbers to our squad before its to late, stick you hand in your pocket mr martin.

Not sure its worth making any judgements after last night. Whilst we do need to strengthen that had no bearing on the result.

Current form : p6 W3 D1 L2 and that would look far better if we hadnt had spicer sent off.

I also still think that overall , the division is not as strong as it was last season.
I know that we are short of numbers and lost some 'game winners' , but we have a decent ( small ) squad and with a few additions ( once we can ) , we can be up near the top.

thinks its gonna be pretty much the same as last season as our home form has let is down the last few seasons, we need to improve our home form first if we are to make top half of league, seems to be to much pressure at home for some reason.

Again Id ignore last night when talking about form which Im surprised you think is poor. We have played 5 league games and one cup game against league two opponents and won 4, lost 2.

The Accrignton game was very disappointing but last night we were unlucky to lose even though we had 10 men.

Im far more optimisitic about performances this year than I was last year, but we clearly need to bring a couple of players in, and stop getting sent off!

every team in the division will come across these problems during the season and every team will tell you about their ifs and buts and some of it comes down to luck as well, we will need a good run of results to make top seven and you have to have a good home or away record to go with it as not many teams will make top seven with 6-7 home defeats during the league season and if we keep slipping up or having a run of bad luck if you like to put it that way we struggle to keep in touch with the top seven.

We will certainly need to pick up results, if things stay the same then we will finish where we are  It is very tight at moment though, a win last night and we would be in the play offs..

I would however hope we dont have too many more red cards and will start to see an improvement, starting Saturday.

If we dont get a result against Barnet I wont be quite as optimistic!

Positioning
the wall is the keeper's responsibility. He cannot possibly be held responsible if one or more of the members of that wall then fail to perform their duty - ie make like a solid wall.

And Martin was in the middle facing Bentley trying to organise it while all the time Hurst was pulling away from where Bentley and Martin wanted him to be. By the time Martin turned to face the ball, there was a chasm between him and Hurst which is exactly where the ball was struck.

It is the keepers responsibility, but it must be tricky when you only have 10 men and there are other players to mark. Communication is bound to breakdown in those situations

The goal was down to having 10 men. Burton had a free player wide left on the edge of the box, that Hurst had to have one eye on, as he could easily have been rolled in and had a free run towards goal. If we had 11 then that player would of been marked, and the wall would of been solid.
