Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-0 Port Vale

I thought Tomlin had a good shout for a penalty to be honest, but otherwise it's pretty fair. Doesn't make any comments on their negativity in the second half, but I'm glad the opposition recognise how good Clohessy was for us, he was exceptional, even by his high standards.

I really enjoyed our attacking down the right flank first half.

Clohessy will get all the plaudits but people need to look at the work done by Hurst and Tomlin. Hurst played an intelligent role and I was very disappointed when Sturrock took him off. He was drifting inside to create the space for Clohessy to run into and I think Sturrock got that one wrong when we took him off. The other factor was Tomlin was outstanding first half and kept playing Clohessy in behind the defence. We were doing a similar thing two years ago when we had Clohessy, Josh Simpson and Blair Sturrock opening up teams with their movement down the right.

Unfortunately we had probably had the wrong forward to benefit from all those crosses in Assombalonga instead of Corr. Assombalonga looked more dangerous second half when we played more through the middle, but he's lacking that little bit of extra sharpness that comes with confidence.

I thought Hurst tired a bit but yes the credit should go to the team and not just Clohessy. What really impressed me about Sean was how in defence he was very cool and collected, played his way out of trouble and made the opposition go the long way around him. Stuff that looks very simple but you don't often see defenders doing at a lower level.

Agreed. I think Clohessy has been quite inconsistent this season but Saturdays was one of his best games. Played his way out of trouble and got forward well. Again the one thing that really lets him down is his crossing. It doesn't help by the lack of height in there at times but if his crossing was more consistent he would be an amazing player at this level.

Yep to the first bit , but if his crossing was more consistent then unfortunately for us he wouldn't be playing at this level for too long.

Oh without doubt. Last season our most consistent player and surprised a League 1 team didn't take a punt on him

:stunned: Really? I think he's been solidly consistent. I'm not disputing he had a better game than of late Saturday, but I don't think he's been that inconsistent at all, probably not the right word you're looking for....

on the subject of clohessey I would question whether there is a better right back in this division, IMO no, he is very good at his job.
