Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-0 Millwall

I am throughly surprised that I'm in a real minority that don't rate White. His positional play is dreadful, no doubt due to the fact he's a right back, but still, whilst he continually gets caught out ball watching. And he offers less going forward than Che Wilson, who most people on here couldn't stand.

He gets caught out positionally from time to time, but generally he looks pretty solid. Decent tackler and not bad aerially. I'd be fairly content with keeping him for longer and would play him over Herd every time.

I'd much prefer to get a proper left back in. With Moussa playing on the left, we need a full back to get round him and offer some width from time to time in exactly the same way Francis does when he overlaps Grant on the other side.

I'd prefer a 'proper' left back too, but if we can't bring one in then I don't think that White would let us down.

Good defending is as much, or more, about good organisation and discipline as it is about having a lot of good defenders. I think that White can fit into the system that we play without too much difficulty even if it's not his natural position. He won't offer a huge amount going forward but when Hammell was bombing down the left in tandem with Gower his defending was getting criticised. White is a capable and solid League One defender and for me that's the most important thing.

Your in a minority with me then.

I am suprised he has not had more criticism about his positional play as well, alothough i assume being a right footed left back must be a pain in the arse. He seems to me to drift to far into the middle when the opposition attack leaving their right winger with far too much space and time to pick out a cross

You might be pleased to hear, that both Col ewe boys will not be sold to us,now that Lambert has gone, according to someone i know in the ewes camp,i personally hope they both stay,at least on loan if possible.

I'd gladly take Heath on, but I think we need a left back in our situation, not a right back who can "fill in" at left back as White is. Indeed, if we had a left winger then perhaps I might be obliged to think White would be alright and I'd get over his poor positional sense and awareness, but add that to his lack of attacking ability and I do actually hope he goes back. And when they signed I always thought I'd rate White more than Heath. Ho hum.

I wouldn't mind seeing Heath staying (though I'm not convinced he should be anything other than cover) but I think White is no left-back. I would love us to sign Billy Jones from Crewe but I imagine he would command a decent fee so that is out of the question really.

Got to be fair to White - he IS playing out of position and hasnt done THAT bad, but I did say to my mate on Friday that Che Wilson was better.

I dont mean that as too much of a sleight on White as I dont think we will see the very best of him (at right back), but thats not his fault, its Tilsons.

White is a solid enough left back, and would be happy to see his loan deal extended as he is a good defender and thats his role in the team, to defend. Look at Francis on the other side of the back four, brilliant going forward and leaves a lot to be desired defending.

In an ideal world we'd have a left footed left back, who was both adapt in getting forward as well as defending but I doubt there is a left back in our price range like that out there. Someone who would have been ideal would have been Matt Richards.

With Moussa playing left wing, we really need someone who can get beyond him and delivery a quality ball into the box, like we have on the right hand side with Francis and Grant dropping in to cover.

Don't think you're in a minority !! Never been a fan of right-footed left backs , White had a shocker first 15 mins on Friday , he did improve defensively but long term he's not the answer.

Can I join you in your minority then?? I was under the impression that when we took him on loan that he could and had played at both left and right back - yet it seems to me the first time he had played left back was with us!!

I think he's probably a decent defender at this level but not at left back - I'm guessing he is just a better option at the moment with whatever the hell is going on with Johnny Herd!!
