Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-0 Millwall

Short summery:

Absolutely no cutting edge in the final third of the field.

Moussa had, by his standards, a pretty poor game.

Macca & Grant both ran themselves ragged and the last 20 minutes just begged for Sawyers dreativity.

Broke from deep on countless occasions and had them in real trouble until it came to the final third - See statement one.

Millwall - Filthy team and gobby supporters.

Special mention to TBV. Made themselves heard all night and at times really got the place going. Well done.

All eleven Blues players - Solid. Nothing outstanding, nothing dire. 7's all round

A different vantage from me having moved over from the Family Stand into the East Greens.

0-0 didn't do the game justice. Both sides should have scored at least once, but the woodwork got in the way.

We totally bossed the first half, Millwall weren't at the races. McCormack coming closest with a crashing drive that went just wide and Barney pulling a save out of their keeper. Half time arrived just as the game looked to be boiling over, mainly down to Millwall's "if it moves, kick it" tactic.

Second half saw Millwall start stronger, and maybe they should have scored in the early exchanges with a flying header. They then hit the post/bar as our defence fell apart. We then came back into it, mainly after swapping Dougie for Revs. Revs hitting the post, Barney not able to follow up the rebound (there was an offside flag involved too, I think for Barney). Revs then went very close.

Ultimately though, neither side really had the cutting edge up front.

Ratings

Mildy - 8. Did nothing wrong, seemed to be communicating with his defence better
Franno - 8. A solid performance from him defensively
White - 8. I like him and think we should sign him. Didn't really put a foot wrong.
Heath - 7. An average performance, likes to head the ball up as opposed to out
Barrett - 8. A better performance than of late.
Moose - 6. A quiet game by his standards
Grany - 8. Run his arse off throughout
Macca - 8 An real steam engine of a performance
Jef -9 MOM. Tripod legs in full flow
Barney - 7. Can't fault his effort, but faded as the game went on
Dougie - 5. Where to start. I really, really want him to start firing, but it isn't happening

Revs - 8. Got stuck in and caused a few problems. Possibly worth a start next game.

Atmosphere. Usual limited range of songs from Millwall, but to be fair they made some noise. We really need to find a way of getting the whole ground cooking rather than just Block W. When it does, it makes a difference.

Referee. Did well to stop it kicking off, but a couple of silly bookings at the end spoiled a fairly decent performance.

Oh and does anyone else think Revs is a spit of John Cena?

Another f*cking draw. Scrappy, feisty game, draw probably fair. I'm quite annoyed at the moment, no Sawyer again!. We had spells of pressure when we just needed a bit of magic, but where was Sawyer. Grant tired towards the end again and I was worried Macca might get sent off and he was getting involved with a few of the Millwall lads, so he could've come on for either of them. Moussa was poor, JCR-like performance. Francis continued his excellent start to the season, Heath was very solid again, JFC added a bit of culture to what was a very English, blood and thunder sort of match. Revell did well when he came on and almost scored, Freedman was useless again. He adds nothing to the team except 'experience'. Good atmosphere over in the North West corner. Millwall fans were their usual selves.

Mildenhall 8
Francis 7
Barrett 7.5
Heath 6
White 7.5
Grant 7
Macca 8.5 MOM
JFC 8
Moussa 7.5
Barnard 8
Freedman 6

Subs
Revell 7

Mildenhall 6 - Not much to do, but the little he did was not too convincing
Francis 7 - Excellent going forward, howling header clear in 2nd half led to millwall hitting the bar
White 7 - Looked good defensively, but going forwards adds little. Decent left back, but weaker than Hammell, Mulgrew and Harding
Barrett 7 - Looked much better today than previously, possibly due to a lack of height in the millwall front line.
Heath 7 - Pick of the back four. Lots of key headers and no nonsense attitude.
Moussa 7 - Worst game I've seen him play for a while, but still worthy of a 7
Grant 7 - Lots of running and had the millwall left back all over the place in the first half.
Macca 8 - Again, tireless performance. The millwall 22 spent the entire game trying to wind him up and macca mugged him. MotM
JFC 6 - Breaks the play down well and gives it straight back. Heading much improved and unlucky not to score with a decent header.
Dougie 6 - Not sure his style suits playing up with Barney. Couple of nice flicks, but more bad ones.
Barney 8 - Loads of running, won more than his fair share of hoofs and a stinging shot in the first half.

Subs
Revell 6 - Never changed the game.

Ref 5 - Pretty awful really. Lost the game the second the guy went through Macca with an elbow and escaped. Lost count of the number of millwall players who squared up to ours - had they got deserved yellows for that they wouldnt have been able to hack us down every time we counter attacked - which they did. Still gets a 5 thou as I have to judge against the normal standard of ref we get.

Tilly 4 - Im normally a big fan of his subs, but thought pace of Walker would have created more than Revells height. Also, we needed to bring on Sawyer for JFC as lacked creativity in the final third and sawyer gives us bags of that. If I were Ron I may be asking tilly why im paying for 2 six month loanees to be sat on the bench when the team hasn't won a league game in the first 4.

Deja vu of tuesday night. Had most of the possession, solid defensivley, effort levels superb but no cutting edge. We are a Theo or a decent winger away from being a very good team. We have 4 points when in reality, Huddersfield apart, we have played 3 average teams and should be top 10 at least. Tilson must invest in some pace up front and on the wings, we have a good passing game but missing any width. Playing with 4 centre mids makes us solid and they work blody hard, but not once did Moose or Grant put a ball in from out wide. Strikers feeding off scraps, although Dougie himself no favours tonight, looked like his legs gone. Very one paced attack, livened up when Revs came on but his finishing is poor. Perhaps Laurent can be the x-factor we need up front but not sure, seems very erratic.
Millwall will probably actually be quite disappointed they didnt go home with all 3 points, hit the bar and nearly scored near the death. Cant remember us testing Forde, again same story as tuesday. Cryin out for Betsy or Sawyer to come on ,but Tilly is sticking with the same players seemingly.

Mildey- 6, good apart from his distribution which is woeful.
Francis- 7, another good game, but we are becoming increasingly reliant on him to provide crosses, this should be the wingers job.
Barrett-7, solid as always
Heath- 7, good game better than on tuesday.
White- 7, definitlely would like to keep but very unlikely.
Grant- 6, worked hard but held onto the ball too much and never looked to get forward much
Jeff- 8, another great game, works so hard, very physical, would not want to see him dropped as really beefs up a lightweight midfield and a threat from set pieces.
Macca- 8, much better than recent games, shouldve scored with chance in 1st half though.
Moussa- 6, too selfish and poor decision making. Again, needs to know when to cut in and when to pass to teammate.
Barney- 6, worked hard but forced to come deep due to lack of service-
Freedman- Barely touched the ball, time to hang up your boots and let Revell or young Calver come in.

Sub
Rev- 6, caused problems but lack of poise in front of goal no surprise.

Ref-7. thought he did wel, people were screaming for red cards with every millwall challenge, ridiculous, very few malicious tackles, its a mans game after all!

Dougie 6 - Not sure his style suits playing up with Barney. Couple of nice flicks, but more bad ones.

Subs
Revell 6 - Never changed the game.

Hit the post, close with a shot, won most aerial battles and chased everything - did far more in 25 mins that Freedman did the previous 65.

Give the bloke a break...

Tonight sort of summed up for me how we need at least 1 wide player in the team. With a bit of width we'd have won that tonight. It got far too scrappy and congested in the middle all too often.

McCormack put in a performance of 2 years ago, which makes me wonder what the feck he's been playing at over the last season. I don't like the guy, in fact I really don't like the guy, but he played well tonight. Unfortunately he still manages to spoil his performance with this petty, childish, insane attitude by which he becomes a prime candidate to drop us in it with a red card. Thankfully the refs back was turned when he walked over Martin's calf whilst he was on the deck in the first half.

We STILL stuggle at defending set pieces and I still cannot work out why we've got a 6ft 4in beast of a centre half sitting on the bench, that came with all kinds of glowing references, whilst we are toiling to defend cross after cross. On the subject of set pieces, I am still miffed at the lack of common sense shown when it comes to who goes up for corners. Why leave Francis and White back? Put them in there and bring Grant and McCormack back. And why do we aim all our corners at Barrett when Heath looks far more competent in the air?

A quick word on Millwall; they looked their usual selves. A poor team ability wise, but an organised, extremely hard working and thugish team none the less. Oh, and thank God we don't have to watch David Forde play in goal each week. We'd all have kittens.

Mildenhall 6: Did he make a save all night? I can't remember one?

Francis 7.5: With our lack of a wide player he becomes our main source of joy down the wing. Played pretty well tonight I thought.

Heath 7: Solid enough. I wouldn't mind him signing on.

Barrett 6: Please, please, please stop going up for set pieces. His usual all over the shop self.

White 6: I'm sorry, I just don't see it. He looks more of a square peg in a round hole there than Barrett did. In fact, Barrett offered more going forwards! It's alarming just how often White gets caught square in games. Again tonight it kept happening and the ball kept being played in behind him meaning he had to try and recover. No tears would be shed by me if he went back next week. In fact I'd welcome it.

Grant 7: It was quite similar to the Huddersfield game in that he ran his knackers off in the first half, meaning that in the second half he struggled. He could barely run by the end of it, although yet again Tilly ignored this even though Betsy was sitting on the bench. He's become an important player for us though.

McCormack 8: As per above, I don't like him but he played well. If he played like this more often and cut out the pathetic temperament then I'd warm to him.

Christophe 7: He needs to be stronger in the tackle and not pull out of so many. His limited passing ability is frustrating, although I suppose that's not what he's picked for.

Moussa 6: One of his poorer games simply because he rarely saw the ball. In the first half he was pretty anonymous, although he came more into it in the second half. We needed what he was doing, running with the ball at his feet, in the middle.

Barnard 6.5: Ran around a lot and moaned a lot. So, usual Barney then. If only he had a bit of pace.

Freedman 6: Not his sort of game whatsoever and Tilly should've known that beforehand and started with the more physical Revell. A couple of nice touches aside, the game passed him by.

Sub:

Revell 6.5: Made an instant impression when he came on, although that faded as the last 10 minutes of so went on.

Overall I thought it was another good performance, and we really should have won, though Millwall did come close on a few occasions and could easily have scored. I thought we looked solid at the back, which was pleasing, and I also thought Barrett was excellent, winning almost everything in the air despite his height disadvantage against Price in the first half. Once again, I can't understand why Tilson didn't bring on Sawyer, who is probably Southend's most creative player, but Revell did make an impact when he came on. Normally I'd think a draw at home to Millwall is a decent result, but having drawn three in a row previously, I'm disappointed we haven't won.

OK. Im normally a Revell fan so I'm not picking him out for special treatment. He worked hard I admit, but tonight didn't change the game as you hope a sub can do. Had needlessly strayed offside when he hit the post (the lino certainly flagged as soon as the cross went in so I assume it was against him) so I don't count that as a plus on his performace.

So do we have to lose before we bring Sawyer in?
Midenhalls distribution is getting worse- 6
Francis was quality the less time he has the better his delivery is-8
White not sure how he is a better option than Herd to be honest a natural left foot would be a bonus and add some quality from back to front-5
Barrett- injured or what?-6
Heath- ok at best-6
Grant- great for an hour shame he couldnt kill the chest trap in the 1st half, great ball by Macca BTW- 8
Macca- Solid, if he continues to start with JFC he must stay more advanced espeically at home- 7
JFC- thought he had a really good game bit like Franics the less time he has the better decisions he makes also liable to play a hospital pass and really over hit his passes in the final 3rd-7
Moussa- a game of 2 halfs good and average needs more service and the left back does not help-6
Barney- You cant deny the effort as always some service and help from midfield please-7
Dougie- Hot and cold- 6

Revs- wrong change this was a Walker night for his extra yard of pace, unlucky with a couple of bits but was blowing out his arse after 5 mins understandable considering his coming back to full fitness but needs to use his brain and win more headers.- 6

A good point? Yes with that performance but we could have easily lost and i felt Millwall got well on top in 2 second half periods.

Sawyer and Mvoto to start at Hull give Barney a rest and give walker and Freedman a start with some 2nd half time for Revs. I would also give herd 90 mins.

Thoughts on tonight... 2 committed sides that created little, relying on set-pieces and mistakes.

McCormack - as Andy says above, is an absolute idiot at times. Frustrating to hear the fans go "YEEEEEEEEA" as Macca dives arse first into another poorly timed tackle leaving himself 30 yards out of position and out of the game (first 10 mins that was).

Then got the stupid, dirty fouls and then the idiotic dive towards the end that he should have been booked for. Like you Andy, for these reasons and the fact most fans hold him up as a god because he acts all hard, I dont like the guy.

He did do well tonight though apart from all the sillyness and thought he and JFC bossed midfield and it was hard to see where Sawyer would come into the game.

Frustrating as I think Sawyer is head and shoulders above anyone else in the squad, but Tilly wont change these 2 now whether they play well or not. Makes me wonder why Sawyer is here - be better for his and Chelsea's sake if he was getting games elsewhere. Saddens me to say that as he could be another one that slips through Tilsons fingers.

Elsewhere, Dougie is back to being an absolute waste of space and we need to give Revell a run with Barnard. Can see Tuesday being Revs chance to get in the team for a few games.

Finally, the feeling is just disappointment really. You've got to take a chance in your home games to take 3 points and once again questions being asked of Tilson that he hasnt got answers for.

No good being 'unbeaten' as that will get you relegated after 46 games.

Everyone played to the whistle though (and for some time after), so the fact he had the chance and nearly scored was still closer than Freedman came to getting a sniff of anything.

Good point about the set pieces Andy, and wish Moussa would stop floating them in and put some real whip on them. Our set pieces as a whole have been disappointing this season and we really could do with a left footed player to be able to take them.

You do wonder, if we dont bring the likes of Sawyer and Betsy on when 0-0 at home, when are they going to bring them on. They made a great song and dance of getting Sawyer back yet hes hardly played, and also Mvoto must be given a chance now that Heath is heading back to Col U. Tillys tactics and use of subs was poor tonight and poor on tuesday night, both teams there for the taking but the wrong players were chosen, especially up front.

Very good chance they will both start against Hull & then back to the bench for the Swindon game.

I cant really see the logic in having players that clearly will play at a higher level in the squad and not giving them an opportunity. Sawyer has energy and drive that we all know about he can unlock things and with tonight being such a high tempo game in the final 3rd of the game he could have had a real chance of turning the game our way.

Pace and creativity is what we lack. If we dont have the bottle to drop macca or jcf lets tuck Granty in and play a diamond with Moussa and Sawyer advanced and one up front, playing Sawyer in the Gerard role if you like. We dont have any width as it is so we might as well get Sawyer in the 11 and have a go at teams certainly at home.

Play a flat 4 away with Sawyer just behind a striker.
