Southend Pier - Icon or embarassment?

might there not be a problem with the exclusion zone around that boat that sunk with/without the bombs on board...

also, think of all the balls that would fly over the North Bank, and into the drink, never to be seen again after being poached by some chav in a canoe!

I am rather unimpressed with the negativity of the 'Zone. Where is your Bob the Builder/Barrack Obama "Can we do it? Yes we can!" attitude?

The main obstacle to the missing balls problem was resolved when Garry Richards was transferred to Gillingham. If we actually position the new stadium suitably, we should be able to pick up sufficient Richards' clearances from Priestfield to turn this into a net gain. The coracle man at Shrewsbury has been made redundant following Shrewsbury abandoning the Gay Meadow and if the club get in there quick before Aberdeen, we should be able to recruit him on the cheap.

Besides, how many balls do we currently recover? The only time we get them back is when we are on Sky when we get 12 back for every 1 kicked over.

i think you're right you know YB... and Davros the builder has been drawing up plans..

Indeed that's what I've always understood, I bet there are a lot of people on here that weren't even aware of the existence of the Crowstone or the significance of Crowstone Road.

What's the significance of Crowstone Road? I assumed it was just named after the Crowstone.

Build it again at the back of the stadium - straight into deep water!

or alternitavly, i could build it next to the spread. That way, we could use the people that dont mind sitting in the pub all day to be lifeboat voulteers, thusfore, they wont have to drive all the way down the pier in an emergency, as they'll already be @ the station (albeit, slightly tipsy)

You'll need to reposition the Spread closer to the train station anyway so as to cut down wastage on drinking time.

Fantastic idea, someone let Ron know. ;)

It would even fulfil the requirements to earn income from other than football, we could charge people who want to go fishing during the week. or even halftime. :net:

Sadly I'm old enough to remember the Pier in the mid 70s - a fantastic place to be for a kid

Useless fact of the day - I worked in the burger bar at the end of the pier in the early 80s at weekends/hols, promoting to the fish bar when very busy. Cycling down the pier and back was fun on a windy day.

Rather than farting around with the high street (which when I left was undergoing probably its 16th pavement change in as mnay months) they shoudl restore some of the heritage and history that made Southend such an iconic holiday destination in the middle of the 90's. Yes nowadays of course you wont get people coming down for a week in Sunny Southend (unless they are from Colchester) but restoring and rebuilding some of the famous historical sites of Southend is a must. Especially the pier. so much could be done with it and really make it a great landmark of Southend again.

Sadly and being even older I remember the pier of the 60's and it was a fantastic place for an awe struck ankle biter. I have some old books of photos of Southend in the early 2oth Century and would love to see the pier restored to its former glory.

I remember travelling home late one night from the City (1976 I think) and getting off the train at Leigh you could see the pier burning, this was the first fire, and the subsequent abdication of all responsibility by Southend council to the upkeep of the pier.
