Southend Helped Rochdale Get Promotion

Yep, I am going. It's only about 25 minutes drive away from me.
I've got a friend who's son is in the youth set up at Hartlepool. He's played quite a bit for the reserves but I don't think he's anywhere near the first team at the moment

I only hope we are as lucky as the last time we played up there. Played off the park, Flavs saves a penalty and we sneak a 1-0 win. Got home at 3.45am but happy!

Here's another random Rochdale-Southend fact, especially for big Derek as I know he loves them, Steve Tilson's first match in charge was against Rochdale, we won 4-0 and I had cornflakes for breakfast (invented by a man from Rochdale, would you believe).

That was one of the few home games I missed that season as it was my mum's 50th. I simply couldn't believe it as I watched Soccer Saturday and saw all the goals fly in.

Hartlepool are gradually sliding down the table though their home form is still good. A win over them and Bournemouth would restart our season so let's hope we are just as lucky this time!

back in the 1960s rochdale were like us a decent 4th division outfit, and they beat us 5-0 i think on the last day of the season to ensure that they got promotion to the 3rd divisio, the people of rochdale hold that team in revere
and I have touched the ball that was used inthe game

That was that great season 68/69, it was 3-0, it wasn't technically the last day of the season as we still had to visit Scunthorpe for a twice re-arranged match. (I went to Scunthorpe three times that year, 2 postponements and the embarrassing 4-1 defeat in front of not many people; a disastrous way to end such a fine season.)

If we'd have won at Rochdale we'd have gone up.

If we'd drawn at Rochdale we could have won promotion mid-week at Scunthorpe - but we only had to wait 3 years before we did just that.

Erm we won that one 2-1

Rochdale hold a place in my heart also. Friday 25th March 1977, very misty night, first shrimpers match and a 3-0 win courtesy of Neil Townsend, Tony Hadley and Alan (1 pen) Moody. It doesnt get any better than that.

The home draw against Rochdale to clinch the 4th division title will always be special to me, our first silverware in my first season going to Roots Hall, unbeaten at home with 19 wins - I thought Southend never lost at home! When the team paraded that little trophy round the pitch before the friendly against Wolves, it was magic stuff, I'm sure that's why I was so gutted when Cambridge pipped us for the title and so overjoyed when Wayne Gray scored that goal against Bristol City.

2 Rochdale gems, there is a chippy in someone's front room opposite the ground and I was mistaken for Charlie Slater (Eastenders taxi bloke) in the Church pub next to the ground.

Beware another random Rochdale piece. I remember going into a bar near the ground (80-81 season) and they served us 'hot' pork pies. really weird but strangely nice! I thank you!!!

Rochdale away was part of a great bank Holiday weekend.
Football Saturday
Liverpool sights (Beatles museum etc) sunday
Superbikes at Oulton Park Monday

But the pub we stayed at just outside Rochdale on Saturday night was in real 7 finger inbred territory

I believe this post is a reminder to us that we are lucky not to be Rochdale as they have never been promoted since they beat us... Gotta feel for their fans finishing mid table for thirty odd years must really hurt and can you imagine the song on the terraces

'Up the football league we won't go
Coz we won't get promotion
and this is what we'll sing
We are Rochdale We are Rochdale
a f#ck##g useless team!':p

I remember having a "worst team to support to remember the Glory days" discussion a couple of years ago and the opinion was Torquay, whose highest league place was about 12th in Div 3 (League 1) about 50 years ago and Preston , who won the Double in 1888, the cup in 1889 and then bugger all since then.....
