Southend Board and chairman in particular

Tommy2holes

Life President⭐
Is it me or is anybody else thinking that our club is being completely mismanaged?

Its all well and good saying that no money available blah blah new stadium blah blah blah, but first and foremost the club and playing staff come first.

If you dont pay there wages on time not just once but quite a few times over then what do you expect on the pitch or when certain players contracts are up.

We are becoming a laughing stock and bigger clubs are circling like vultures.

Lets get something right here. If the club werent in such a financial state then the likes of Barnard would have more than likely signed a new contract and southampton would not be getting one of the top scorers in the league for a measily 200k.

If we get relegated to league 2 next season that would cost the club infinately more than offering Barnard a contract worth staying for. How many people will come through the gate when we are midtable in that league ?

Maybe 5-6k a game. Make no mistake withought Barnards goals we are now in a relegation battle for the rest of the season. How much of that transfer will tilly get? My guess is that we will see a couple of loanees of no real quality.

The board have a lot to answer for this season and i sure hope that we are on site soon as i for one have had enough of Mr martins nonsense this season.

(ps) Good luck Lee

Yup, it's just you. Everyone else around here thinks it's just dandy and hadn't noticed anything amiss at all.

*hmmmm*... when did all football talk come down to things that have nothing to do with the game? eg. foreign managers, financial crisises, debt, dangerous play, 'was he interfering with play?' and club chairmen.

I'm sure I use to get excited about cup upsets and players dribbling around 3 players and scoring?

They should but they clearly don't.The FF project rules.

I wonder how many people will come in the gate to see our fight against relegation which starts now IMO?
We'll get an idea from the next two home games against Wycombe and Swindon.

I would not surprise me to see Matt Harold/Lewis Hunt/Betsy/ Revell have a blinder saturday and Paynter for swindon.

In truth though as much as it pains me to see other teams score and former players in particular i would love to see Revell rattle a a 30 yard winner and run over to the directors and give them the 2 finger salute . That would bizzarly give me great pleasure.

It is a worrying sign when you start hoping for old players to do well. I've experienced it a few times too.

Paynter likely will play well, he's a decent player hitting some real form as part of a great two-pronged attack right now.

co-incidentally most, if not all, of those players were often widely denigrated by southend fans when they here.
instead of constantly whining about ron martin, geoff king, etc, maybe its time that as southend fans we took a look at ourselves. ultimately we get the club we deserve and if this forum is anything to go by, we are bunch of spineless whingers

I'm sorry but i have to disagree with this comment, even if we could offer him the same as Southampton or Leeds could offer do you really think that he would choose us playing in front of 7,000 each week at the Hall or 25/30,000 people at Southampton or Leeds ?? I'm sorry but Barny might have enjoyed playing here but what player in their right mind would'nt want to play for Leeds or Southampton they are two of the biggest clubs in the football league.

Could not dissagree more. What should we do that we are not currently doing?

Get behind the team? I think we have all season

Get behind the Manager? I think we have all season

Get behind the chairman? We have been for the last 5 years at least even though has been putting OUR football club in peril. He has had his house raided had the tax man on his back to the point of winding up , sold star players without re-investing money as promised and now is trying to victimise local small business in a recession simply so he can make a few quid whilst using the ground as an excuse to decimate the integrity of the football club.

We have the smallest playing staff in the league dont pay our players on time sell anyone decent for peanuts mug our fans off yet miraculously we still have an 8k average.

So i ask you how exactly are we not supportive???????

I see your point , but i ask this. If the club had paid all players on time and if the club had not been publically humiliated through the court procedure and if Ron martin had done what he said at the start of the season and learned from mistakes and signed players early thus giving us atlease a chance at promotion, and if Al revell was not berated by our own board then would we have had atleast a much better chance to keep barney?

Yes all footballers want to better themselves but if your happy live locally and the team are happy and you have a chance of promotion , then maybe you will stay put.

If you are not getting paid on time have been playing upfront alone and have no chance of promotion then there is nothing to think about.

Is it me or is anybody else thinking that our club is being completely mismanaged?

No otherwise we would have been out of business by now.

Its all well and good saying that no money available blah blah new stadium blah blah blah, but first and foremost the club and playing staff come first.

They got paid in the end, no wages are still owing. We don't know what was happening inside the club at the time. They could have arranged a meeting to discuss it for all we know.

If you dont pay there wages on time not just once but quite a few times over then what do you expect on the pitch or when certain players contracts are up.

We are talking about professional footballers here. They won't be crying on the sidelines saying "No, I won't get the ball until you pay me" like little 6 year olds!

We are becoming a laughing stock and bigger clubs are circling like vultures.

Lets get something right here. If the club werent in such a financial state then the likes of Barnard would have more than likely signed a new contract and southampton would not be getting one of the top scorers in the league for a measily 200k.

How are we becoming a laughing stock? We have paid our debts and we aren't playing badly on the pitch either. Of course bigger clubs will be interested if we have decent players. We are in this 'financial state' because we are looking towards future investment. Short-term suffering and Long-term gain. What did you expect? A new stadium to be planned out and built while still being able to spend hundreds of thousands in the transfer market?

200k isn't measily for a league one player who is injury-prone and has only started scoring regularly this season. We don't know why he didn't sign a new contract, he just said that he didn't want to discuss it.

If we get relegated to league 2 next season that would cost the club infinately more than offering Barnard a contract worth staying for. How many people will come through the gate when we are midtable in that league ?

IF! We will get 200k and some may be invested into getting a new player. Some rumours are that we have an eye on a striker or two. 5k-6k a week! Leeds and Southampton can afford that easily but not us! That will cost us £100k just between now and the end of the season, without clauses and bonuses.

A couple of loanees with no quality. Tilson has had many loanees in who have excelled here. In the past 3 years we have had 24 loans (correct me if I am wrong) which have included the following possible team :

GK : Adam Federici
RB : Anthony Grant (signed on a free)
CB : Dorian Dervite
CB : Sean Morrison
LB : Charlie Mulgrew
RM : Hal Robson-Kanu
CM : Lee Sawyer
CM : Jean-Francois Christophe (signed on a free)
LM : Junior Stanislas
ST : Theo Robinson
ST : Leon Clarke

Would you mind seeing at 11 on the teamsheet week-in week-out?

I apologise. You are right. No-one ever said a bad word about Paynter, Harrold, Hunt & Revell when they were here. I don't know where I could have got that idea from.
I don't give a monkey's about the chairman. If there is a credible owner out there who is prepared to invest money in the club I'd bite his hand off (The faceless consortium who are going to 'run the club like a business' fall well short of that if that's all they are going to do.)
But I'm sick of people talking as though it's an outrage that a club who have spent nearly their whole history in bottom two divisions and who have always sold their best players and always been hard up , are, well, in the bottom two divisions, hard up and selling the best players.

Kind of agree with this. Its remarkable that the club still has the support that it has at the moment, considering the fact that the last time we began our descent into financial trouble, in the mid-90s, our average attendance was barely 4k.

I don't know what it is about the club that makes players play like ***** here and then be a success elsewhere - I've seen it happen for 12 years, I remember how annoying it was to see Rammell and Thomson score 20 goals a season each for Walsall/Wycombe and Gills/QPR after they left us. But fans don't get on players' backs when they first arrive. They are always given a chance. Paynter and Harrold were given chances to shine and didn't take them, so were 'denigrated'. It's the nature of the football fan.

****ing spot on!

IMO the chairman is trying hard to change this but it wont be easy!

Moan moan moan and round we go again.....How quick to forget the financial state of affairs when Ron first took over. He has saved this club from the hands of the reaper several times now....lets face it anyone at the helm will struggle to compete given theres only several thousand punters every other week ...and untill we get into ff and start to grow... we just have to stick with what we have......its time to get behind everyone who works for the club...I have faith in the current board like i do with Tilly n brush and the 11 guys out there playing for our entertainment....

Hardly humiliated. Ron Martin and his lawyers said that it was an unusual approach by HMRC and they weren't expecting it. What did Ron Martin say at the start of the season? I know that King said there will be signings (we had around 13 players on trial so you can't blame them for not trying!). Again it was Geoff King and NOT the board that came out and criticised Revell.

We don't have a chance for promotion this season, end of. He played up front alone twice this season, so that is not a valid reason.

I don't things have been this bad in recent memory though, certainly not in terms of the size of the playing squad.

I do genuinely believe that RM has the best interests of this club at heart, especially in the long-term. But we all know that he, as well as the club, is going to make dollars out of this deal, and I think that no matter what he says, he has his own interests in his mind as much as those of the club. Unfortunately, to secure his and the clubs' future stability, he is sacrificing the clubs' short-term fortunes by cutting the operating budget. I think he's taken on a project that he affords as he goes along rather than having the full funding in place before hand and this probably means that all funds are directed away from the club and towards the stadium project. He is walking a tightrope and if he falls off it, then the club goes tumbling into League 2, which is where we'll open up at Fossett's. But RM is obviously confident that he can walk the tightrope successfully and all we can do is wait and see whether he can pull it off wth as little damage to the playing side of our club as possible.

Who said we are out of the woods? We may well go bust and im sure that we weren't just given 2.1million so therefore will have to pay that back.

Erm no they werent. They didnt have a clue what was going on. Oh so we paid them in the end. Perhaps that should be the clubs new motto. Southend united : WE PAID THEM IN THE END.
They should be so grateful..

Yeah thats right because we all put maximum effort in when we havent been paid.

Well we have borrowed to pay another debt.
Is that paying it? Id be happy paying 200k for a striker that has scored 17 in a very very mediocre team. Bargain as we have paid more for less

Yes but they are not our players they are somebody elses. And make no mistake Tilly has loaned some right old crap aswell.

The 5-6k a week i mentioned was crowds through the gate as apposed to wages .

Have they answered nearly every question?

They havent answered nearly enough and the questions they have answered are old news or information which is already available.

They have publically criticised a player who by most was well thought of. Accused falsely the fans of fighting each other. And vicitimised a small businesess for financial gain amongst other things.

The last two months have really really sucked...

Don't believe we're a laughing stock though. Ask Portsmouth, QPR, Leeds or Grimsby fans what it's like to be a laughing stock. We're just struggling like so many other clubs are at present.
