Southend Beard XI

Should more Southend players grow beards?

Probably the most famous bearded ex-Southend player is Jim Fryatt. Not famous for his beard, not famous for having played for Southend, but famous for that 4-second goal.

I believe the beard made up for lack of hair on his head, IIRC he was foilically challenged.

What 4 second goal?

I'm afraid to say I've heard of Jim Fryatt because he's played for Southend, not because of a 4 second goal. Also where does he best fit into our XI? I think he was some type of forward, although formation changes sometimes make it harder to slot players into more modern formations such as 4-4-2.

I seem to recall Tranmere scoring after 4 seconds once (v Bradford PA ??) Didn't know the scorer also played for us though

Fryatt's 4 second goal was for Bradford PA against Tranmere around 1963/64. He was a centre forward who played for many clubs after Southend including Bradford & Stockport. He finished his career in the US, and I believe his son is a golf professional.

Jimmy Fryatt (1970-71) was a fearless centre-forward and was best remembered as the player to score the fastest goal in a league game when it was recorded as four seconds from the kick-off in a match for Bradford against Tranmere in 1964. Jimmy played for Philadelphia in the NASL and was assistant manager at Las Vegas Quicksilver. He also worked a total of 13 years in casinos but now works on a golf course in Vegas as a mechanic, looking after the mowers and other machinery
