Southend 2 Norwich 1

Firstly whoever said Darryl was blatantly better than Bart - you're talking $%&*e.

Secondly, Wayne Gray - what did he really do of any use today, cos I'll be buggered if I can think of anything - come back Lawrie!

All in my humble opinion of course.

Quote[/b] (Leeboy @ July 23 2005,19:25)]Gutts was excellent, Bart and Darryl cancelled each other out IMO - they were both equally as good as each other.
How the hell can you say Bart and Flav cancelled each other out?

Flahavan yet again had another game when the only thing he did was pick the ball out of the back of the net. Putting aside the question of whether a proper size keeper would have reached the free-kick, his positioning for it was once more poor.

In contrast Griemink looked like a goalkeeper, dominated his area, made the right calls of when to come for the ball and when to stay.

Other than Wiggy who stood to make money if we were relegated, I can't understand why anyone would want Flahavan in goal over the far superior Griemink.

I thought Flavs' positioning was poor for the goal but I'd still take him over Griemink. I see the advantages that both of them give to the side but personally I think that Darryl's superior agility and sharper reflexes win him the spot ahead of Bart's greater command of the area.

I see both sides of the coin. Darryl isn't perfect and he certainly isn't God. But he's a decent keeper at this level.

Quote[/b] (BoyWonder2 @ July 23 2005,19:52)]Eastwood's goal was a little different to his normal goals, a ball played down the right channel, from Hunt I think
Wasn't it Maher? Why is it everything he does that is good is overlooked?

It was a superb pass, right over the defenders head where Fredy could get to it ahead of him.
Maher was easily man of the match, but because he goes about his business with little fuss, he nearly always gets overlooked.
Great pass for the goal, and when he went off the number of times the easy ball isn't on for the other players was alittle worrying.

A good win and we are progressing along nicely.

What short memories some people have. Darryl, not Bart, was primarily the reason we got promoted. Our unbeaten run started when Darryl returned in goal, and there appears to be no mention of his save against Milwall which I highly doubt if Bart would have reacted to. He is a far better shot stopper, although, taking nothing away from Bart, we certainly have healthy competition in goal this year. As for Kevin Maher, we looked a totally different side when he was taken off, he oozes class and if certain people think you always have to go forward on a football pitch, have a look at the Premier$hite and the better players who take time to build attacks. Kevin Maher is a quality player and we only benefit from his class which I'm sure will shine out more in the higher division.

I knew the argument about Flahavan and Griemink would start again after the Norwich goal yesterday. You can't really judge them on yesterday's game because neither had much to do. Griemink caught a few balls, big deal, Flahavan had nothing to do apart from pick the ball out of the net after an excellent free kick from Simon Charlton which most keepers would have probably struggled to save.

For me, the only negative thing to take from yesterday's game was the fact that we really need 2 new strikers soon because Gray was very poor, the only player who stood out in a bad light. Apart from that, it was a good performance and by friendly standards, a decent game especially the first half. I thought Guttridge, Wilson and Eastwood were our best players and it was a great goal by Bentley, too.

One worry, though, where were Jozic, Pettefer, Smith or Gower? Tilson said he wanted to have another look at Jozic so I'm guessing he was injured. Because of these absentees, quite a few youth team players had to be used and a couple of trialists, one of them being Daniel Woodard who I don't think we'll be seeing again. God knows why he's at Chelsea.

I thought James Lawson, after a quiet start, showed some nice touches and he likes to pick up the ball and run at people which is good. Sadly, he came off injured after a needless and cruel challenge from Damien Francis

Wilson? You are having a laugh aren't you? Yes he was better than tuesday but still put in a below par performance. The highlights were Barrett, Prior, Maher, Bentley, Guttridge and Eastwood.

First match iv seen since the LDV final and in my opinion one of the best i have ever seen southend play. We played quality football that can be seen in the championship, quality finishes.

My problem was I didnt actualy no who was who on the pitch at times, I even thought jozic was the guy playing in right mid even though hes a centre back hehe and also was under the impression that lawson was cole thanks to the east stand calling his name instead of lawsons.

Guttridge read the game very well as did maher, the defence were dominating and both keepers playe well.

Just need to find another striker to challenge Gray as i was disapointed with him today.
Eastwoods finish was lovely and bentleys was a beauty.
Great game to watch

I spoke to some Norwich fans after the game and they had nothing but praise for us. They felt that if we played like that week in week out then we would be looking at atleast the play offs. They also said that eastwood/maher/ barret and guttridge look like players they would want in there team. They said that they hoped we might meet in the league sooner rather than later. On the whole a cracking performance and even more pleasing is that we had so many that didnt take part. Sign another striker and get jozic in and we are in business.

(ps) I thought that maher just oozed class on saturday. I find it really hard to take that people honestly think that he is cr@p.

Didn't think much of the triallist Woodards on Saturday - when he got into a good position on the right he fell flat on his face. Other than that he was a bit Petteferesque as a right midfielder as he didn't look to take people on.

Tilly said he's not fit yet which may explain his performance against a team from a league above. Also he is a striker not a winger (from reading the Chelsea websites) so why we played him out of position when we're actually looking for a striker, I'm not too sure.

I see Chelsea also released a left back - Ben Huddell - at the same time as Woodards, surely he could be worth a look too?

Don't flatter her, Mike. How you, or anyone else for that matter, could be remotely interested in Wiggy's drivel is beyond me.

The local papers up here in Norwich were full of great quotes.
Worthington said "All credit to Southend. They played some good football and deserved to win."
Match report says "The excellent Fredy Eastwood", and "Southend looked the better side, with the highly rated Eastwood showing why the Canaries ran the rule over him last season as he displayed the full range of his skills."
Peter Thorne their new signing is quoted as saying " Having gone one-up we thought it was going to be too easy."
That last qoute sums up Norwich's attitude to the game. They only had to turn up

He is down to play again at Maldon along with a bloke called Keze Ibe, ex Yeovil according to web site.

Thats what I like to hear. Always good to read opposing managers and players being complimentary on our style of play.

I think Southend is fast becoming a lot of peoples "2nd side".
