Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend 0 West Ham 3

Cresswell was very impressive. There's a lot to him, and he looked very comfortable on the ball.

Straker was playing agains Vaz te (perhaps?), and the left side of the pitch was hideous. He can't be judged on that, although I thought he looked rather nippy and was always looking to get forward despite the quality of the opposition.

Taylor in goal looked very assured and he made a few smart saves in the first half. From what I saw today Taylor>Smith

Tomlin didn't really do much, but we struggled to create much to be fair

Kane was pretty solid in there, used the ball well and was the only player able to read the drop of the shoulder or neat turn of the West Ham players

Hurst didn't do much

The rest of the new players/trialists didn't do much of note..

and the biggest crowd of the day from the home fans came when Freddy Eastwood replaced trialist Joe Yoffe in attack with nine minutes remaining.
:

Why ? Were they all outside refusing to come in until Freddy came on ?

Cresswell was good in the air but not so good on the floor, very slow when turning and chasing back.

Completely disagree with this. He showed decent pace to get back at their forward and make a last ditch tackle during the first half and looked more than competent on the deck. I was really impressed with him and feel he could prove a real shrewd signing.

Agreed, we're thinking of the same tackle. He also did a similar thing in the south west corner of the pitch shortly before the one you've mentioned. I thought he looked agile and didn't seem slow on the deck at all.

Big Positive: Cresswell...Great can't wait to see him in the centre of defence; What was impressive was his commitment (aka Barratt)
However, he continually organised and pulled the back four into line

I think it would be harsj to judge any of the players on saturdays perofrmance due to the fact that the weather was so bad, and had it been a league game it would have been postponed. Straker has taken a small amount of criticism which is harsh for his first game, against a prem outfit and also defending in the worst part of the pitch. The number 11 triallist in front of him also didnt give him much protection. Cresswell i thought was excellant and again anyone having a go about his turning or pace need to look at the state of the pitch. Hurst looked comfortable on the ball and always looked forward in passing and tomlin battled hard as did harris with little supply. The 11 and 4 on trial didnt impress wheras Taylor in goal did well and also 17, folley looked good on the ball second half and linked well with hall and martin. Not sure about the 19 upfront, very similar to benyon and we really dont need anymore forwards, smith in goal didnt have much to do, but the one thing he did have he made a mistake, so would take taylor ahead of him. baring in mind this was our first game of preseason and the weather conditions i thought there were many positives. A few of my west sham friends are more worried about their mob than i am of ours. Assume the game is till on tonight. UTB
