Sodje to leave Brentford

To be honest, I would have thought most people are hoping we make any substantial purchase to partner Fred.

That said, it's probably going to be a lot cheaper to get someone in to play as foil for Freddy as goalscorers tend to be the more expensive strikers.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so outrageous paying a lot for a really solid defender. In my opinion we'd be better off looking at Shane Duff of Cheltenham or Roger Johnson of Wycombe although that is based just on the playoffs.

I can't see us offering that much for him, but then there is no reason why we would necessarily have to. In January he still had 18 months on his contract and Brentford were in a reasonable position in the league. Now he only has one more year left and he has stated his intention to leave. This changes the situation somewhat and means Brentford might accept a greatly reduced bid.

I'm not saying that we should go for him, I just think that if we did, we could and almost certainly would be offering a much smaller fee.

Yes, it was Southampton and the agreed fee was £500,000. Well outside our price range, especially when we don't really need a central defender.
Sorry, have I missed a signing or are you happy with going into a Championship season with one player who, hopefully, will have recovered from a broken something or other, a second who has put off his retirement from the English game and is injury prone and a third who was looking a bit shaky at times towards the end of last season?

Centre halves get injured, centre halves get suspended. I'd like two more please. One as a regular starter, one as cover.
Agreed, but the point I was trying to make is that we have other priorities. At least we have two central defenders whereas we only have one striker (sorry, Lawson and Bradbury, assuming he signs, do not count as out and out strikers who are going to play 40 games). £500k+ is a hell of a lot to pay for a defender and if we do have that kind of money I'd rather see it spent elsewhere.
Don't agree about Bradbury, to be honest. I think he could be the perfect foil for Eastwood.

And we've got four centre-halves at the moment. We only used five in the whole of last season.
