I think you'll find it was probably paid on Wednesday and the funds are clearing, hence the extension.

We hadn't been given 3 extra days to pay; the hearing was delayed until Monday and everyone just assumed that meant we had 3 more days to find the money. I'm pretty sure it didn't mean that.

Funds would have been paid via electronic transfer and would have cleared same day. Payments of this size do not 'clear' in the same way as when you and move funds electronically through a bank. Effectively this size of movement would go through the same process as when you purchase a house. Banks are notorious for 'loosing' payments intra day. If we had to 'prove ' to the revenue that the funds were there by close of business on Friday then we should instruct the payment ASAP. Banks only guarantee that payment will be made a on a given day, not at a given time- the time is best efforts. The revenue I assume needs proof that they have received the funds, not proof that we have tried to pay them. IN other words to reduce stress pay early ! If we have really written out a cheque then we are even dumber than I thought we were.
