6'4 so quite a tall chap - been around a bit, particularly at a higher level - i assume he has been on the radar for a while

Played for Southampton 2004-2006, same time Sturrock was there!

According to wikipedia he is the fastest goalkeeper ever to score in world football! Must have been brought in as cover for our injured strikers!

Really surprised (happy) at this one.
120 games for Nottingham forest before last going to Middlesborough on loan in championship. Cost Forest 500k..
Very much at the top end of expectations and a two year deal...

I am sure the legion of doomsayers will find something wrong but worth waiting for...and guess this type of signing was always going to be last minute. I am sure the lad would have been hoping to sign somewhere in the championship or L1.

i thought this was a better quote from Wiki . . .

In the 2007–08 campaign, Smith helped Forest gain automatic promotion finishing second in the league they were promoted from League One to the Championship. Smith had a terrific season and helped enormously in goal, making match winning saves to help the Reds gain promotion. He kept 24 clean sheets in 46 games, the record for the league in that season. This achievement was recognised when he received the Puma Golden Glove award.

He's a top keeper for this level. Very very highly rated in his younger days and he's played as a number 1 for a few big clubs. Great signing IMHO.

So now we see what's happened.

Sturrock has been following Phil Smith all pre-season, trialled him and couldn't work out why he seemed to have shrunk and lost all his hair.

Then he realised it was the other Smith, that Paul bloke, that was at Southampton and that Luggy remembered.

Yeh I thought so too, but I knew other people were likely to pick up on it, so went for the obscure record he has! Albeit one that was given to him by the opposition.

Sounds a good signing, and relieved that it wasn't the other Smith too!

Very good signing, remember him being highly-rated at Southampton. I did think of him earlier in the summer when pondering goalkeepers but thought he'd be out our range since he's mostly played in the Championship but obviously not, well done Sturrock and the board. Certainly should be better than his namesake Phil. But what was the point of signing Belford, except for today? Must have happened quite suddenly. Don't you just love the drama of the lower league transfer merry-go-round. Forget Van Persie, who our goalkeeper will be has been the transfer saga of the summer.
