Small Wall ,small Goalkeeper .

THE SEVENTIES NORTH BANK

Life President⭐⭐🦐
Sitting in the south upper right behind the Goal you could see that we was in Big Danger from that free kick .Apart from Harrold ,the rest of the wall looked so small and inviting to an Orient player to dink it over .Our Small Goalie then makes things a lot worse by not standing in the centre of the Goal so that which ever side he shoots ,he can get to ,instead he stands towards his right and leaves 2/3rds of the Goal to aim at and has a lot of us pointing to where the Ball is now going to go as he is not Superman and will not get across quickly enough ,I would think that 99% of football fans would say that Thornton is now going to aim it just inside Darryl's left post .Every Goalie should know that it is only when you have a Tall Wall do you rely on them to cover part of the Goal so that you can go to the other side more .

Need to see it again really.

The freekick went in off the post it would have taken some keeper to have been able to reach that post whilst also covering the other post too.

yea but if we had a big wall then they could of dinked the ball over the top and there would be no tall player to header it, the wall is mainly for the low shots.

You could have had Van Der Sar in there with stilts, and he wouldnt have got to that free kick from where I was standing - Daryl didnt have a prayer, it was just too good, simple as that.

I wasn't at the game today and my dad has told me it wasn't reallt Flav's fault but in my opinion Flav's is a poor organising and keeper when it comes to direct free kicks.
I have often gone to games and actually expected free kicks to go in while a friend who has been to quite a few southend games with me (Forest fan) has said that he thinks Flav's positioning of both the wall and himself is poor and he is unbiased.

Mate that was some free kick by the cheating c*nt no keeper would get to that. Its a shame we didnt have a decent ref who realised thorton was diving everywhere.. Oh well only 3 points from top lol

I am a goalkeeper (Only saturdays when Southend are away, and sunday league football) but Flavs was correct with the wall positioning and his own positioning.

Like someone pointed out earlier, if we had Harrold, Clarke, Wilson, Barrett in the wall (probably our best headers of the ball) then Thornton could have crossed it and scored that way.

The free kick was out of the top draw, in off the post, not a single goalkeeper would have saved that in my opinion.

Yes ,the free kick was out of the top drawer ,superb ,but all I am saying is that Darryl is making their minds up for them and giving himself no chance if it is placed near the post .
As for the Wall ,it looks like the easiest to beat that I have seen in 30 odd years of watching football .When the free kicks are as central as that ,they never cross it and always shoot .

Didn't Flavs get a hand to it, pushing it onto the post ? If so, would a taller keeper have saved it ???

I thought that Flavs did very well to even get a hand to the free kick. It was a superb strike. However, why wasn't a player positioned on that post? If someone had been there he would simply have headed the ball away! Worth a thought.

Exactly. Darryl got his fingers to it so if he were six inches taller he would have got a hand to it and saved it. It's kind of a moot point though because if he was six inches taller he wouldn't be playing for us.

Top drawer free-kick either way.

Tillys comments on the free kick on th OS make interesting reading
"But we let them back into the match. It was a sloppy free kick to give away and Flavs may be disappointed not to have saved it.

Possibly a sign that Flavs is not considered an automatic choice?

Yes it was good and in the right position, but watching on tv, Daryl got a hand to that, therefore van der sar with out stilts would have got to it :p

Before loads of people start slagging Daryl , lets not forget that he makes up for his lack of inches with great agility , which he proved again yesterday - something that taller and heavier keepers often lack

We were sitting in the south upper right behind the line of the post and ball. Unfortunately the wall WAS positioned in the wrong place as there was a gap of about 2-3 feet between the left of the wall and the post. Shooter Mcgavin called it before he had even kicked it and it was obvious where he was gonna put it, and I do still belive a taller keeper would have saved it as it wasn't even in the top corner of the net.

Not sure about a taller keeper would have saved it, but a decent keeper would have saved it.
We keep on changing the rest of the defence but not the goalkeeper..

His ability to make some excellent reflex saves is beyond doubt but his inability/reluctance to command his box, one would assume, is down to his lack of height and he aint going to grow any more. I can only assume that Collis is not very good in training as i can not see for the life of me why he hasn't yet been given a chance.

Watching Collis in the knock up should give you a clue!
