Memory Lane Sir Freddy of Eastwood Day (17th Anniversary)

Was a fantastic night, I was in East yellows that night, remember my uncle texting me every 5 mins to see what was happening as they had a power cut for a time in Pitsea that night.

Another thing I remember, did/has anyone noticed Mitchell Cole wasn't in any of the post match photo's and wondered why?

he'd just returned from a loan spell at Northampton, after playing his last game for them on the previous weekend and was named on the bench for us on the Tuesday. But his loan spell didn't finish until the Wednesday morning, so he wasn't put on the pitch and was ushered away for that reason, in case the result was overturned for us fielding an illegible player.

East stand red back then, what a night under the Hall lights, within earshot of Sir Alex good fun, welcome to hell 😄
Great memories and told myself all night we can do this.

Watching from home in Germany whilst my dad was away on tour somewhere (ex-Army). He called me at ht only to say “we’ll get thumped second half”.

My brother had managed to get a ticket from someone at work. It was for the North Bank amongst the Mancs.

About 45 minutes before kick off he phones me from behind the North Bank and says he can get me a ticket from some manure guy but it 'll cost me £50.

Dilemma. I pause. Can I justify £50 when the chances are we'll lose anyway? But if we win...

To late my brother tells me he's just sold it to someone else.

Bugger!!!

That time of year again.

After the electric atmosphere at Roots Hall on Saturday, how appropriate that we remember THAT night once again.

It's not often I've felt the sensation of goosebumps and hairs on the back of my neck stand up because of a football match but on that night I did. What a feeling.

Still proud to have been part of that experience.

The date also holds another significance for me. A year after on 7th November (2007), my dad was cremated after he passed away a few days after his 40th birthday. It wasn't a sad occasion but a celebration of his life and a bonkers one of that! He worked match days at the club and even tried his hand at Leo the Lion and Captain Wes back in the late 90s. Due to the mascot links, we were joined at Southend Crematorium by Sammy the Shrimp, Elvis J Eel, Gunnersaurus (Arsenal), Moonchester (Man City), City Gent (Bradford), Tadworth Hound (Children's Trust) and a few more too. The sight of football mascots inside Southend Crematorium is something I will never forget, just like THAT game!

Tilly certainly deserved another shot at management for all he accomplished as our manager, the team he assembled and how they played. Too loyal to SUFC when things were going "pear shaped" Treated shabbily by the club in the end. Desperately took the Lincoln job which was a big mistake. Should have left when he was attracting bigger offers.

Been a loyal fan since 1969. Been the best manager we've had in my opinion. His teams played the best football we ever played in my time. Kev is catching up fast, although at a different level and under different circumstances.

Yeah, something that still haunts him to this day.

The next day I went into work wearing a retro Southend United shirt. It's the only time I've worn a football shirt for anything other than sport or watching Southend.
