Echo News Shrimpers boss Maher pleased to welcome back fit-again Miley

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher thought Cav Miley did well on his return to the starting line-up at Altrincham.

Miley – who was sidelined by a back injury in late August – made three appearances off the bench prior to his involvement at the weekend.

And Maher was pleased to welcome Miley back into the team.

“Cav gives everything for the football club and has done amazingly well since he’s been here,” said Maher.
“He did well too.

“He’s full of energy and has great quality on the ball so I was pleased with him.

“I didn’t expect him to last as long as he did either.”

Miley, who played 82 minutes of the game, and George Moncur were both handed recalls in midfield against Altrincham as James Morton and Oli Coker dropped down onto the bench.

And, when asked why Coker did not come on, Maher added: “You can go through the team every week and someone doesn’t play but this game wasn’t won or lost on tactics.”

If Maher really thought Miley 'did well' it just confirms how blinkered he is. The team selection was just plain wrong and while it is too much to expect him to admit it let us hope he learns from it, although I doubt it. Judging by his recent rather strange public comments and of course the red card incident he is clearly feeling the pressure.

In the past he has often said players have slight knocks or something but hasn't this week - so can we assume everyone is fully fit - including Coker and Collin - excluding Waldron who wasn't involved.

It might be what he says publically - I'd be surprised and maybe more concerned, if he picked individual players out and throw them under the bus

But why pick an individual out for praise which was clearly unwarranted. Self justification I suppose in selecting him in the first place.

Probably because CP, or whoever conducts the interviews, have asked them the question about Miley.

I highly doubt he has come out and praised him without being led there by the question.

Kev isn’t the type to call out individuals for poor performances, he doesn’t like to throw players under the bus.

'this game wasn't won or lost on tactics'. I am losing respect. Man up and change.

If players win their individual battles and do the hardwork, 9 times out of 10 that team wins the game.

People overplay the importance of tactics in my opinion. Same as formations.

If your midfielders win their battles against the other sides midfielders, for example, you are winning half of the battle towards winning the game. Defenders stopping their strikers, full backs stopping their wingers, our strikers getting the better of their defenders and so on.

Individual moments of brilliance, lucky deflections, lapse of concentration, referee decisions can outweigh winning those battles at times, but you have to work hard as a bare minimum.

As the saying goes, hardwork beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

I think the suggestion is from some that the players are actively being coached to play possession football at all costs .. to 'play safe' rather than take long shots for example. Now I can't believe that personally and think (hope) this is down to confidence and that Kev can turn this round. Yes we need extra bodies but we can't use that as an excuse and I genuinely believe that we have good enough players to get ourselves on a good run and gain momentum (Charlton showed this).

It's perfectly natural that punters moan about the results when they aren't favourable. Football fans have always done this. Kev knows this will be the case, he's not naive and with any luck they'll be working very hard with the players all week to put in a performance we are all happy with on Sat.

I'm certain 90% of fans on SZ/the socials would love the Amigos to find the solutions needed. We DO need solutions. We are being sussed out by opposing teams, we're too easy to beat at the moment. Plus our build up is painfully slow at times. Plus the obvious one .. lack of goals. Maher is partly culpable for all this.

I'm sorry, but this is why I've lost faith with Maher. How can he justify this decision and then states this - he just will not accept any of the blame 😡

“You can go through the team every week and someone doesn’t play but this game wasn’t won or lost on tactics.”
Kevin Maher's comment reminds of something once said by a former manager, Dave Smith, after a game - which we lost 3-0 - during a season when Southend was relegated to the old Division 4. Smith said Southend's tactics and performance was spot-on but the only thing wrong was the result!

Of course, tactics and strategy affects the outcome of a game and so does team selection. Dropping two in-form players like Morton and Coker - assuming of course they were not injured - seems like a disruptive and counterproductive move.

Seems a case of favourites to me.

Morton has been holding his own of late.

Wind must be wondering why the hell he signed.

Wood should leave for his own sake. They clearly don't rate him or think he fits into the "style" we play.

Appiah Forson probably wondering why he's just warming the bench every week.

Coker finding form and replaced by moncur....

Feels like we've made a lot of signings of late to fill out the back end of the squad, but what's the point if they have a good game then are benched, or we only make the subs right at the end of the game when its too late.

Grim.

I cannot but disagree with nearly all you say. Set up and tactics are paramount in giving the players the right information and positions to beat the opposition. Our team always works hard. Very hard. Their effort is not a complaint I have. Our selections are wrong. Our tactics are wrong. Our manager is wrong. God knows I wanted him to do so well but he is making it very hard to support him.

Of course how you set up a team matters. Putting round pegs into round holes matter also, however once you’ve got them out on the pitch, it’s down to those players to win their battles, and we aren’t doing that anywhere near enough at the moment unfortunately.

I don’t think we’ve worked as hard this season as last. I’d love to see the running stats, intensity runs, distance covered etc of this season compared to last. I bet all of it is down unfortunately.

With the exception of Collin, as witness his very public rebuff after the game the other week.

Kevs not the type of manager to park the bus either. That'd be a change in formation
