SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher remains confident goals will start to come from more areas of his team.

Gus Scott-Morriss leads the Shrimpers’ scoring charts with 14 goals so far this season.

But Maher still has faith others players will soon start to score more regularly.

“Of course we want goals from everywhere,” said Maher.

“The forwards worked their socks off again on Saturday.

“Macca (Bonne) and Hops (Tom Hopper) put a real shift in and it can be a thankless task because you have to do so much against Tamworth.

“It’s such a physical game and they’re also coming back to defend set-pieces.

“You just wanted one to drop to one of them but I’m sure they will get their goals when the chances do come.”

God he talks cra p!
In interview he says we wanna put points on the board for the rest of the season and then abandons the method that put the points on the board by setting up for a point on the board every time we play the park teams!…..can’t wait for his negativity to be over although we’ve got a long wait!

Someone should show him the ‘data’ pulled together on the other thread and ask him why he is so ‘sure’ they will take their chances when they come.

What do you expect him to say?? - our forwards couldn't find their arses with their hands and can't wait to move some on and get new ones in??
It's not just the forwards failing , his signings don't forget, it's the lack of creativity, movement, anticipation etc etc from the midfield. The new signing will soon have any spark of those qualities coached out of him I fear.

When we sign strikers like Hopper and Bonne I think we look at what they can do for us defensively, defending set pieces etc, which is great, but I think if more emphasis was put on their ability to create chances and score goals we might have more success in front of goal. Not to say that we shouldn't have the whole team defending and attacking etc but I think that's part of the consideration when were scouting them, rather than prioritising how deadly they are up front. I'm not convinced it's working tbh.

On the flip side, when we sign defenders I don't think much is looked at from an attacking perspective, it's kind of like an added bonus if they score a goal but the attackers like the ones mentioned above are specifically scouted with their defensive qualities being important to us I think, which shows you what mentality he wants to play with.

That didnt answer the question - do you expect him to throw them under the bus/publicly criticise or be diplomatic?

We signed Crowther becasue he was a goal threat

No, I don't think we did. We signed him because he was a defender, the fact he has scored a few goals in the league below was an added bonus.
I think, with the forwards, especially target men, Bonne, Hopper etc we sign them with their defending abilities being a major part of the decision. Crowther we would have signed regardless of whether he scored goals or not, I don't think we would have done that if Bonne and Hopper weren't good at defending set pieces.

I think GSM also sheds considerable doubt on the vaildity of this view.
