Few things, and I'm no expert, but-

I'd expect Shannon Matthews to be in care until the court case is done. The fact that a relative is involved, as well as a nine year old child, means that in order the trail to be fair/correct/proper, she wont just be able to go home. Unfortunately, witness intimidation happens.

Secondly, being arrested for having indecent images on your computer means nothing. If it's his computer, and he's the only person to have ever used it then maybe, its pretty damning. But a lot of questions would have to be answered. Exactly why he has been arrested- to answer the questions. Devils advocate for a minute. Who is to say that he brought the computer second hand, and the images are buried on the hard drive somewhere? Or whose to say that someone else used the compluter. Or that it isn't his computer, but his fingerprints are on it?

Of course that is all possible but it is not about the maybe and might be of it all, it is about what can be proved.....that is the difference between paper law and trial law

From what I understand - allegedly blah blah etc - this stepfather is just another in a long string of boyfriends for the mother, most of whose kids are fathered by different men. The stepfather hasn't been on the scene - at least in a cohabiting sense - for that long. I'm guessing that social services decisions not to return the girl are not directly related to this latest twist.

Either way it seems that we may have another disfunctional case for sterilisation on our hands.

What I think Chadded is asking is, does anyone know anyone who can delete images from his hard-drive?

Not that I've got any incriminated images lurking on my PC but that's something I've always wanted to know from cases such as this.

Is there a ghost system in PC's which track every single thing you do on your machine? Something which you can't access (e.g. deleting internet files & cookies just won't be enough), even if you reformat the whole hard-drive.

Or does the majority of it happen when people either get unlucky & take their PC to be fixed and the techy-monkeys in PC World find folders rammed full of dubious images or the police impound PC's as part of their investigations.

Also, a common theme on programmes like Without A Trace, whenever they're looking for a missing person they always go through their instant messaging records. If you ensure your settings don't save all conversation history how can this be done?

As I said, something that I've always wondered about!

As I understand it, your harddrive looks something like this:

(Obv. on a much larger scale)

Each line and everything that the hardrive consists of is there for some reason. So take, for example, a picture of child pornography is opened on your computer. The computer then makes a record on the HD such as:

Then the person who has looked at the picture then re-formats the computer thinking the police won't be able to see the picture as the whole HD has been reformatted, whereas all that re-formating does it changes the code to something like this (very simliar but not the same):

\)0|0\||0\\|\)
|(\)|)0||(0)00|

So now the person who has looked at the picture thinks it can not be brought back, but the police have programmes which undoes this funtucion for something up to about 6 re-formats (IIRC!). Therefore, to completely remove something from your computer for good (and I'm not saying it can't be recovered - it makes just the process a hellova lot harder) you should re-format it more than 8 times once-after-the-other.

**There is no guarantee ANY OF THIS is right (some of it maybe, some of it might not be), but that is how I understand it from what my IT teacher told me the other week. I take no credit for how reliable it is.**

I'm pretty sure all chats are saved into documents held on the server by the IM host, although I'm not to sure. If someone could clarify this; I'd be grateful!!

As I said, something that I've always wondered about!

With most operating systems when you delete a file you delete the reference to the files location, not the file itself. The actual binary representation on the hard drive remains where it was. These 'deleted' files may be easily retrieved until some other process overwrites them.

There are utilities to completely clean hard drives (which work by writing 1s, then zeros, then 1s over unused segments on the disk).

I have worked in some secure environments and we used to crush hard drives after use rather than attempt to clean and re-use them.

I have always wondered if people that are into looking at certain types of pictures use networks of unsecured home PCs as servers to store these pictures and how easy it would be to clear your name if your home PC was hijacked for such a purpose.
 
I had cause to recover a deleted file the other day and purchased some file recovery software. When I ran it on the memory stick which the file had "disappeared" from I found literally hundreds of files available for recovery going back 2 years on a 1g memory stick , most of which the current owner of the stick had never even seen. If I can do it for USD 49.99 then I am sure the OB can manage it
