I think you're all being completely unfair to Ms Lucas. The greens have a superb energy plan.

They intend to save the planet by reserving fun and enjoyment for rich people.

Simple but brilliant.

I'm all for it on the basis that the environmental risks are confined to the North and the profits will probably be shared mostly in the South. Uproariously good news.

a friend told me in the early 70s that the future was nuclear fusion. The was at Imperial College at the time and then went to Gonville and Caius in Cambridge to do but not complete his PHD. He is now a millionaire after working in the oil industry all his life.
40 years on and we're still waiting for the technical issues to be sorted out, There is an experimental plant in France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITER
In the meantime we use gas. We import most from some decidedly shady places and people. The technical problems are in my view exagerated by the Greens. The science just does not support their arguments. Until nulear fusion is practical, frack away I say.

I think they should start fracking in Witney, if Cameron is so keen. Then perhaps in every constituency of Cabinet Minister's who support the idea. Isn't this a real NIMBY issue? Even in the most 'liberal' of American states there are individuals that don't think it's such a good idea.

If anyone turns off as soon as they see an article in the Guardian being quoted.........then let's try the LA Times

Is there any shale gas in Witney?

Nuclear fusion, or to put it in laymens terms, the safe harnessing of the equivalent power/energy generated at the center of our Sun, will not happen for at least 50 years at the best. And that's a professional estimate from those in the know. It's been created in France but for jst a second or so, that's it. And that's just generated, not harnessed and saved. (iPlayer a recent Horizon prog for more information)

I'd hazard a guess that nothing is going to stop the UK fracking for our own gas supplies. To be ever more beholden to external supplies of gas and electricity supplies is a very dangerous game to be playing. (I know it's not a game, I was speaking metaphorically) Especially with the way the UK's relationship is and where it's heading with regards to Russia.

Financially it's an absolute no brainer. This country would be crippled withing three weeks to a month if Putin decides he's had enough and want's to make an example of a European country, ie us. We just cannot generate enough to keep the lights on, even with stringent and widespread cuts, if the external supplies were to be cut.

There are going to be some major battles in the coming months and years from communities up and down the UK that wan't nothing to do with fracking and see just the short sighted view from their own garden fence. Long term we are absolutely screwed without it.

Edit.

And yes. A few will become extremely rich and powerful doing it, many will make a good living out of it and many will have their lives effected in ways they didn't want or like. Bit like back in the day and the advent of the steam locomotive and the railways ;)

I've got a good idea.

Why don't we start fracking under your garden fence? :winking:

Cool, when do you want to start? I wouldn't give a toss.

Besides which I live in a flat and don't have a garden. Please continue to post inane drivel and spelling/punctuation corrections. I'm sure everyone appreciates your well thought out, balanced and intelligent contributions to the thread  I suggest you now get some sleep. You must have been up half the night putting that reply together.

I wonder why you think countries like Germany and France have banned fracking (and Scotland has imposed a moratorium on it)?

I'm no tree hugger but until we see the results of some thorough evidence based research, fracking gets a No-Gracias! from me.

Germany hasn't banned it outright. It's imposed a moratorium on it.

Although German laws de jure explicitly prohibit only the use of hydraulic fracturing in designated water preserves, fracking operations generally need be authorized by the government, which has publicly declared a moratorium until long-term damage to residents or the environment brought about by fracking can be ruled out or until alternative extraction methods become available that don't rely on the injection of toxic chemicals.

That is unless Wiki hasn't been updated in a while. I can't be arsed to check.

Scotland's easy. They are all ****ing mad. France and Germany as they are worried about the tree huggers. The science is all on the side of the frackers but never let the facts get in the way of truth.

Perhaps you could supply us with a link to some research based evidence that proves conclusively that fracking is safe?

I'm interested in reading some research that proves conclusively the following are safe: driving, flying, trains, radiotherapy, surgery, socialism, bananas, vending machines, napkins, all medication and cats.

i cannot find any such evidence so we must ban them...

I was under the impression that flying was the safest form of transport.

I'm sure if you dig around long and hard enough you'll find some statistics to back this up.:raspberry:

"safest" does not mean safe. People die flying but it is still legal.

what is your threshold for fracking to be considered "safe?"
