I can't believe nobody has thought to ask the one person on here who's part of his job is to watch the local non-league sides week in, week out, to get a proper perspective on a player like Higgins.

I've asked Dagenham Kev already but his reply was about a different topic altogether.

Fella , whats your take on Canvey's Danny Heale ....always impressed me massively when he was at Concord Rangers .........great abilty , possibly a little on teh can't be bothered side though ???

Heale is a strong player in the ryman league who could possibly imo make the step up. He does carry a bit but his big powerful and knows where the goal is, has good hold up play maybe worth a trial if we are going down the 'get the non league lads in' direction.
I did put Troy Hewitt an intelligent forward who has been at many local non league clubs name forward but no one took up on it and he is now at QPR.
Ive always said there is good enough local talent playing in the non league scene which could make the step up.
We should use our ressie games and trial games to get these players in on a regular basis to run the rule over them.

Have seen Higgins play for Chelmsford a few times and he often found the net! However his overall play did not show him to be someone who would make an impression in the Football League. He fell out of favour with Glenn Pennyfather which is not a good sign at all. Glenn is a shrewd manager and surely would have kept him if he thought he had potential to be sold to a League club. I am happy to trust Pennyfather's judgement here.

Any news on how Merrick James-Lewis is playing?

Merrick was tidy enough. I thought Alex Woodyard was excellent today, really hard-working performance, wasn't afraid to get stuck into the challenges in the centre of park and broke up play. When he got the ball in space, he used it intelligently. Moved out to the right-hand side briefly at half-time when Adam Bouzid was substituted, continued to put a shift in and then switched back into the middle for the final 20 minutes. Really pleasing to see him back at the levels he attained in October/November time which got him into the first-team reckoning.

Cheers. Anything to report on the game

How did the trialists do?

What subs were made?

Subs were: Asante for Boylan (half-time), Stevens for Bouzid (half-time), Nesbitt for Higgins (67 minutes).

I've said this before about forwards, especially in reserve games, but it is difficult for them to make an impression, especially when they play up front together as there's no history or knowledge about their play to work off. I thought Boylan worked pretty hard without testing the Ipswich goalkeeper (except for one flicked back-header at the end of the first half), Higgins less so, and both were bossed around - disappointingly - by a reasonably youthful centre-half pairing for the hosts. I saw Higgins play for our youth team a few years back and he looked a powerful, running forward. He didn't show so much of that today, despite an impressive non-League goalscoring record. If he's willing to work hard and, perhaps more importantly, sit our bench (because Corr and Sturrock are going to be very much ahead of him in the pecking order), then he might be worth looking at again.

Danny Heale will never be a Football League player.

(except perhaps for Barnet!)

I have seen Danny Heale many times over the last 10 years or so and maybe 10 years ago if a pro club had have got hold of him he might have stood a chance but quite correctly he will never play league football now.
he's 31 this year, smokes 20 a day and lets just say knows how to enjoy himself after games.
Ashley Miller the Concord Rangers right back is definately worth a closer look, he 20 and was released by west ham at 18, having seen a lot of him also over the last 2/3 seasons I have never seen a winger go past him, and he is excellent on the cover, he marked Troy Hewitt when Hewitt played for Harrow against Concord 2 weeks ago and Hewitt didn't get a kick, Concord won 3-0
Tony Stokes also very impressive thi season, too good for that level of football

Rob, any idea as to why Boylan was subbed at half time? Did he pick up a knock? Only it seems a little pointless to only give someone a half.

Was Bouzid again totally unimpressive? Again, another strange one to get only a half.

I'm glad to hear you say that Woodyard impressed, as I have been totally struggling to see why he was continually getting first team recognition ahead of Stevens.

Don't worry about the Boylan question, Sturrock has answered it on the BBC site.

Anyone know why PS was in charge of the team?

He wasn't, Centre of Excellence Manager Luke Hobbs was. Sturrock watched closely and it looked like he offered some guidance, but I imagine his main brief was to run the rule over the trialists and look at the youth-teamers in action with a view to deciding what will be offered for next season. I don't know why Coughlan wasn't there, but I guess the priority for him is to be fit for Saturday's game!
