Pre-Match Thread Salisbury City v Southend United

Good reports, was thinking of heading down there myself but was a touch too far on this occassion! I for one am not reading too much into the overall result and not as much into the the performance, what is essential now is that Sturrock starts to ease off with gathering who he needs and lets the squad gel. Easier said than done I know, and also the 'if only' we had another month before the season kicks off for this to happen. I just cross my fingers that we don't spend the first 10 games fiddling about with the team and making changes, although this is inevitable, but hope for a second half of season surge into the top half and beyond.

So have we worked out which Lee Smith it was trialling last night?

Corr played against derby and looked decent to me.

Also, totally agree about Easton, very maher-esque with perhaps a little bit more about him?

Good point; for some reason I'd convinced myself that he didn't play against Derby! I think he's still easing himself into action, but there's definitely something to work with. As for Easton, yes, he does have a bit of quality, I've been really impressed with him so far and it looks like he and Grant compliment each other well.

Just got in; a few thoughts on tonight's match. Firstly, what Tommy Widdrington said before the match was spot-on - to paraphrase the assistant boss, don't get too high when we get a positive result, don't get too low when we get a more negative one, especially in pre-season. It wasn't a superb performance, but was is clear is that this is a squad still gelling, and that's what these matches are all about.

Looking at the different areas of the pitch:
The goalkeepers: An Orient-supporting mate told me that Glenn Morris is a very good shot-stopper but can be suspect on crosses due to a lack of height (sound familiar?!). It certainly looked that way this evening, although he wasn't overly tested. The goal was a stunner, 35 yards out, dipping, he had no chance. More concerning was a regulation high cross into the six-yard box that he fumbled and the ball was swept into the net, though not before the referee had blown up for an infringement. Evans played the second half and looked more assured, although he was nearly beaten by another cracking strike from distance early on.

Full-backs: Both Herd and Clohessey looked to get forward well in support of the midfield, though when they did the final ball was lacking in quality. In getting forward, they were sometimes caught out of position, leaving the centre-halves to make decent saving tackles...

Centre-backs: Initial impressions of Coughlan are that he's a solid defender and that he'll do a good job in League Two. He will get caught for pace, but more often that not his nous will get him out of tricky situations. Phillips seemed like he didn't really want to be involved in the first half, but Coughlan covered him with his reading of the game, in the second period Phillips was much more impressive, and well worth another look.

Wingers: Whenever we got the ball in the first 20-25 minutes, it went wide to Soares or Hall, and they more often than not provided a telling ball into the box. Soares drilled a low shot against the post inside the opening six minutes and the quality of his crossing early on was excellent. For the last hour or so, that changed, and Hall seemed unwilling to take on his man, whilst Soares' delivery got progressively worse. I'm still excited about seeing these two and Zahboub, though, swinging crosses into the box; I think it will happen.

Central midfield: Grant was snappy as ever (no such thing as a friendly in his eyes), Easton oozes quality in the centre of the park. This probably won't go down well with everyone, but he reminds me of Kevin Maher in many ways, just keeps it simple, finds a blue shirt. Appears to be growing into the captancy role as well. Bilel came on at half-time in place of Grant, and something had clearly riled him as he threw himself into two reckless tackles on the Blues left, got involved in a fracas in the penalty box and, after two, quite frankly innocuous, 50-50s on a defender and the 'keeper going for the ball, had to be brought off for his own good. Lee Smith looked alright in the ten minutes that he played there.

Forwards: Corr won just about everything in the air, even if his team-mates didn't always read it; that may come in time. If we can get good balls into the box, he might just be the man to connect. On the ground, he doesn't look so comfortable, with a heavy first touch and wayward passing, but he is still easing himself into action. Spencer was lively again, reacting quickest to Soares' rebound to find the net, only to be pulled up for offside. Crawford came on and chased everything down, Paterson - rather than looking lazy and/or lethargic - just seems to me like a young lad who is still getting used to his surroundings and who lacks confidence. Hopefully finding his shooting boots in pre-season will mean that he hits the ground running on August 7th.

A brilliant report Exiled Shrimper.

If you can look at the photos of Salisbury on the OS....................N° 12 certainly is Bilel (with authentic eye patch). Bloody hell!.........I know you should have some element of aggresivity in your game but............................If he is that fired up for a friendly match, God knows what he's going to be like when the season gets going. At least Ron will be happy...............with the fines he's going to incur for yellow and red cards, we unlikely to end up paying him much!!! ;)

I think he's number 19 in the photos, can only see the back of his head but he has longer hair so I'd guess he's the Histon striker.

yeah, he's the histon striker. didn't have much time to impress, but looked lively.
seems like a decent player, spoke alot for a new boy.

Interesting comments from Sturrock on Blues Player. Disappointed with the performance last night. Not the right attitude and lack of passion from some of the players, who have put 'playing' before 'attitude'. Bilel was praised as 'someone who wants to win'................'if he had eleven like him, the League would be easier. One of the few positives was our ability to, once again, come from behind. The rebuilding of the team is not over and the likelihood is that it won't be the finished article, come the start of the season. He knows the positions that require filling but won't be rushed into signings just to make up numbers.

It's definitely the Histon player.

As I said previously, he's generally used as a right winger not a striker, so perhaps he's seen as the back up to Soares. Interestingly, it did seem nailed on that he was going to Dagenham in the last couple of weeks.

Could he be the 'young lad' about to sign that Sturrock told JamesTheSuperBlue about at training in the week?

Sounds like he doesn't take any prisoners then. I imagine the post match BBC Essex interviews will be somewhat more entertaining and enlightening this season!

Would any kind soul like to post what Hall and Paterson said on the Blues Player?

Put up Patersons as that was more interesting.

Hall came across a bit mardy to be honest until Scriven forced a smile from him.

Maybe he just got a bollocking for his attitude?? Said he came to Southend to 'get back into league football asap'... fair enough I suppose, at least the other players who were asked had to the good grace to be a touch more enthusiastic about it...

Sounds like another promising performance, despite the result...

It seems to me that Sturrock is building a squad purpose-built for lower league football; quick, tricky wingers supplemented by lumps up front and players in the middle who are more than happy to sit deep and keep possession... It's a proven formula that I'm more than happy with, despite it not necessarily being pleasing on the eye.

Before Tilson's departure I was adamant that, to steady the ship, a season of consolidation was the best that we could hope for. I have to say, I haven't been this excited for a Football season for a while.

Personally I thought, we played some quite nice stuff against Derby, the good thing is, that its a mixture of root one, and tidy possession keeping.
I to am veryy excited.

Right at the start, Sturrock said he 'knew the formula' to get out of this league and he is definitely building a squad capable of getting out this league (the right way).

At the end of last season before it all kicked off with Tilson, I was devastated as the best I could see happening was relegation with the manager and squad we had. Tilsons attitude wasnt right (and again, dont blame him - but at the end of the day, it was no good for us) and that rubbed off on too many players - who again, cannot really blame them, but they would have taken us down.

Sturrock has done 100% the right thing in letting players go (and I know some walked of their own volition) and virtually starting from scratch with brand new players.

Its totally transformed the atmosphere of the club and now I'm really up for the new season - feels like a totally new adventure, new clubs, grounds and our new club to watch.

And before the doom mongers start, I know... manager contracts, pre-contracts, embargos, 4 registered players, were are going under, its all Rons fault....

Ignoring that - I'm super excited :D

Cheers.

I get the feeling that is Hall all over. He's clearly one of these players who has bags and bags of ability, but his attitude is stopping him from pushing on. Hopefully Sturrock is the man to knuckle him down. Seemingly though, he's been easily one of our stand out players so far.

Indeed, I'm also excited for the new season, which a month ago I never thought I would've been.

Yes we've got to get the off field problems sorted in the next couple of weeks, but I'm totally of the belief that the new management and this new influx of players wouldn't be here if it was all about to go belly up in the coming days.

We're building a very tidy and capable squad and as long as there are no issues with wages this season, I see no reason why we can't challenge.

I found last night the most enjoyable friendly I have seen for a while, if only because we were playing somewhere different from the normal Chelmsford, Canvey etc pre season diet. I hadn't realised Salisbury had been relegated 2 divisions and, if the reasons for their relegation are as their supporters make out, then it is lucky that the Football league don't apply the same rules for us.

The ground is just about Conference standard. Its location near to a Park & Ride demonstrates that it is some way out of the City Centre, being surrounded by some fields and some new housing and industrial development. Reasonable admission charge of £5 and a whole 10p for the team sheet, despite the advertised price of 20p. As I had no change, a steward bought my team sheet for me as well - it was worth having as our number 3 was down as John Hero.

Widdrington seems very popular at Salisbury and it looks like he will be doing most of the directing from the bench.

From last night, I think we will be seeing a very standard 4-4-2 for the season with, to my pleasure, left footed players playing on the left. The wingers will be wide when we are attacking and tucking in when defending. Both full backs will try to get forward. We also have a typical big bloke up front and a rugged defender at the back.

From what I saw, Soares and Clohessy could both be assets. Soares certainly looked like he will do well if he gets the ball and Clohessy looked to me as if he should be at a higher level than the Conference level he was playing at.

Hall and Corr will both need the supporters to give them time. Hall may be one of those players who doesn't seem to do much but when he does it will have an impact. Corr wins a lot in the air but won't, I imagine, score many goals. If he has the right person alongside him, he could be useful.

Coughlan will do for League 2, he should score a few goals from set pieces. Easton is definitely a Maher type and so will have positves and negatives. Bilel would have been sent off in a normal game but I would like to see more of him. His height could be an advantage.

I thought it was Lee Smith who scored the goal - although perhaps like our own Smiffy he waited until the ball was 2 foot over the line before touching it and then tried to claim the credit - certainly he got more handshakes than Paterson did anyway. Smith was only on because of the need to replace Bilel.

Whatever else is happening, we need to get behind these players. Some will no doubt fall by the wayside but hopefully a few of them will form the basis for a half decent team. As with many teams, the main problem will be where the goals come from.

Yes, I agree very reasonable, however I was disgusted by the £2.00 parking charge - how dare they charge for parking for a pre-season friendly!!
