Running Thread

Brutal 10k along the seafront this morning - I can handle the rain, the wind was really tough though. Still, mustn't complain after moaning about it being too hot all summer...

True dedication!

The running has tailed off this week for me but that's partly down to playing three games of football on three consecutive nights. A harsh reminder that I'm no longer in my 20/30's, although I did come through it unscathed and covered a lot of miles on the pitch!

8.5 miles along the seafront today without any leg pain which was a first for me in ages. However the back hurt like hell as I was running with my head down to stop the rain getting in my eyes.
Roll on the 25th and Stort.

Went for a 5km run today. Had to stop after just over 2. My calf felt like it was going to go again. I walked home and iced it. Now waiting for my wife to get home so she can have a look.

That said, I'm just going out to get myself a coffee, and her work is about a 2 minute walk from the coffee shop...

Tried a 5km again on Friday. My calf went again, but I finished...albeit extremely slowly so as to not push the calf too much. I can still exercise, but my favourite exercise is my 10km run. I'm really missing it.

Did a 4 mile run last Wednesday in just under 29 minutes and that was after I played 25 mins football on the Sunday, did 85 mins football Sunday so legs are getting strong again at last, still ache a bit today tho.

Same as me with this plantar fasciitis, been 7 weeks now. Never in my running career of over 43 years, have i been out of action for so long.
And that's including piriformis syndrome ( Sciatica ) twice in last 6 years & usual hamstring 'pulls' & glandular fever!.

My race number for Stort turned up in the post over the weekend. Suddenly it’s all become very real. Onto the carb build up starting tonight and post leg massage on Thursday.

I don't run without long compression socks these days, certainly I have had a lot less problems since wearing them, and avoiding running on pavements.

On a more positive note, Southend Hospital have done their first knee operations, arthroscopies, this week since March. But they are the minor ones, day stay only and are done at a small independent surgical unit near Braintree.

I did look into these but the research seems to be inconclusive. That's not to say they're not worth a try, but I need to get fixed first.

I know many runners who have had joints cleaned out of debris. Most have not got back to running to the extent they could pre injury BUT certainly all made it back to running, if slower and shorter, less times a week than before; myself included.

When running longer, I tend to use calf guards/long socks.

Yep, science is undecided but even if it’s placebo, works for me when running long.

Compression (probs tighter then you would usually feel comfortable) post run is the real benefit for recovery though.

The running has tailed off for me recently due to me still hating doing it, down to 2-3 times a week now but still have the 2x weekly footy as well.

Did 8km this morning and got the usual foot and calf cramps towards the end which are really painful but disappear as soon as I stop. I don't currently wear any form of support of even long socks. Could this help prevent this?

What strength work do you do for running?

slightly off subject but I joined Essex boot camp a month ago, now been 10 times, strongly recommend it, especially for people (like me) who are crap at pushing themselves or lack motivation.
it has stopped me running as I don't have time for both, so I can say if it has helped or not, but I do 'feel' fitter

Around 4.5km this morning and only a very slight tightness from the calf. It wasn't an awful time either which means the stuff I've been doing in the meantime has been working.

My wife tried a new treatment on a new machine 2 weeks ago. (She's recently sold her physio practice to another physio company who have spent a ridiculous amount of money on a shockwave machine.) I've had two (out of four) treatments and it feels a whole lot better. Obviously you can't say 100% that it was the treatment that made the difference because it could have just got better by itself, but either way I'm now on the road to recovery...
