Running Thread

Worst running fall ever yesterday as planned to run South Woodham Ferrers parkrun tomorrow before kayaking at PaperMill Lock.

On Wednesday I realised the car MOT ran out on that day so managed to book in for the Thursday. Thought I would not take the tiny chance of getting pulled up. So was going a 3 to 4 miler starting at the top of Artillery Way. Done the the first mile to the round about in good time only trying to nip across the road quickly but caught my left foot on the post and went flying. I laid on the floor and at first I was pleased when I realised my previously dislocated right shoulder had not popped our. That joy was brief though when saw the various injuries although aware my right elbow was the worst of six injuries. Then comes four hours at A & E although many were there longer. Ultimately after talk of a skin craft in Chelmsford I returned in the afternoon for six stitches. Ouch😫

On the bright the wife to car for its MOT and it passed.

Away for Commonwealth games, yesterday I did 6K in 31:25 and today I did 11.3k in 1.14.37.

I’m currently looking for both my sense and a new Lung

Just recovering from Covid, could only manage two laps of parkrun, six weeks earlier had done a half marathon
First time I have caught it, so now back on a long journey have London Half in four weeks not sure I’m going to make it 🥲

Haven't run for months now as my back is still bad. I'm now seeing a strength and conditioning coach who works at my wife's physio practice. It seems to be working, but I'm not going to even try running for the time being as I don't want to aggravate it before I go on holiday.

Gave up on that idea. I had a chat with the strength and conditioning guy who suggested I download the couch to 5k app and start at about week 4 which will allow me to run and rest in between to reduce the load on my back. I did that this lunchtime which was ok. I got a few twinges, but am feeling ok now. The test is how by back reacts later today/tomorrow.

I haven't run for months due to tight achilles.

It always seems to get worse when I step up cycling in the summer

Still doing my couch to 5k along the seafront. Blooming 'eck it was tough during the heat wave. Today there was a distinct pain in my heel and my shoes have started to fail and the plastic heel thingy has come through the foam. So it looks as if I'll have to shell out for new running shoes. Any suggestions. It will be for running on whatever the esplanade is made of (concrete?)

Go to Runners Edge in Southend - they will sort you out.

I'm using the couch to 5k to help rehabilitate and get back into running after a bad back. So far so good.

I had chronic back pain for years. Started seriously exercising and running nearly 2 years ago and am touch wood tickety boo. Funnily enough one thing I couldn't do until couch to 5k was actually run. My knees were wrecked playing football. The NHS website says one of the best things for arthritis is exercise. Rubbish said I but it's true. What do these doctors know eh?

This is also my plan - probably start on week three
Yeah, it was suggested to me to start at about week 4 or 5...I went for 4!

I'm also working with the strength and conditioning coach at my wife's practice. He's actually making a big difference. I knew my running technique was bad and causing injuries, but I didn't realise just how bad I was, and how weak I am in certain areas. For example, my knees collapse inwards when I lunge and run. He's working to correct that, and a whole host of other things!

My poor running style is also what is causing back issues as I don't use my ankles, knees and hips enough to cushion the impact on my lower back.

Anyone else run the London Big half Sunday and was disappointed as I was
Thought over hyped and not many people out watching, nice medal and shirt made up for it though
Doing 4 castles half marathon in Kent in three weeks looking forward to that one, anyone ran it ?

Our own David Smale ran it in 68 minutes and came 10th.
He is hoping for a very good full, London time next month.

Went there this afternoon. Very nice young man. Did a gait analysis which was a lot better than I thought it would be given all my football injuries. He humoured me about not buying anything Chinese but as most of the options seemed to have been made in Vietnam which as they are China light when it comes to Putin and burning coal and one of my daughter in laws is from Vietnam (a coal mining town near the Chinese border) it's just about OK for me.
So I've now got a pair of Brooks Ghost 14s. I came home. Looked at the reviews (basically thumbs up from the critics) and cheaper from Runners Edge than on-line which I wasn't expecting. Win win all the way.
Thanks for the advice Cyril.

I did it, but I had a shocker, wish I could blame the course/event, but I was just rubbish.

Most of the “big events” like that are overhyped and overpriced. The support was lacking in places, but was very good in others.

I did it previously in 2019 and enjoyed it more than Sunday.

Richmond Runfest is off this weekend, so that’s the 5km & 10km Saturday and half and full marathon on Sunday.

Parkrun okay to go ahead, but it’s up to each individual one/landowners/council to give final go ahead. My usual one, Burnham-on-Crouch is off, as is my local one in Maldon, so Chelmsford for me tomorrow for my 100th parkrun.
