You say its not homophobic, but it is in the same sense that calling a Pakistani a **** would be deemed racist. The term itself, though probably quite accurate, has been coined by such elements as to make it derogatory. Added to this the obvious need you felt to distance yourself from people this term may refer to, and your phrase takes on a homophobic undertone.
