Ron Martin is a legend........

A few years ago I was thinking … Please, please, don’t let Southend drop out of the league, it‘s so hard to get back in and please let us have a ground to play in. Now it’s a case of … Please stay in League 1 so that when we’re in our brand new ground we have a good base to step up into the Championship where with our extra capacity we have a great chance of staying at that level.

Ron Martin has transformed my expectations. A legend? Well, you have to accept he’s in it for the long term and the profits that will come from all the add-ons to the football ground element. It’s also great PR for any local projects he gets to be a part of. But I do believe that he’s become an emotionally involved investor who genuinely wants Southend United to succeed as well as make him money. So if calling him a legend helps, count me in.

Ron Martin …. Legend ….. yes !!!!!

I thought the interviews yesterday were very interesting . First Tilly effectively put his Chairman on the spot , which was met by a swift response and an excellent piece of PR by our esteemed Chairman.

Judging by the reaction on here that makes it 2-0 to Ron in the 'addressing the fans' stakes . I was a bit surprised at Tilly really because in that department there is only ever going to be one winner .

The real test will come when we see how many of the players mentioned we actually sign . Wages have , we know, been an issue , and it is not T+B who have the final say on this .

RM certainly prepared his ground in the interview , citing players lack of desire and agents fees .

Well first of all , agents are an unfortunate fact of life in football - a bit like Taxi drivers in real life - you know you are being screwed but you sometimes just have to use them and its not just the bit they do when you use them its all the hanging around in between that you are paying for ( they don't all have shows on BBC Essex either )

And as for desire , well how do you measure this and who sits in judgment? If Fallon turned his phone off as Ron said then that's a pretty easy one for everyone , but I am sure there must be others that are less clearcut . Ron suggested that players don't want to come to Southend - well one, their agents may well be steering them elsewhere in the knowledge that they (the agents) will have a problem with their fees and two, they might be a bit more interested and show more 'desire' if we were to make it more 'worthwile' to uproot their families etc

I really hope that RM succeeds in his negotiations to bring some CCC standard players to Roots Hall . Hopefully these negotiations won't stall through agent intervention or a 'lack of desire' .

Perhaps though the Stadium decision is but a few days away and we will see a frenzy of activity thereafter if it is favourable. After all Ron has shown himself to be a 'safe pair of hands ' on many occasions.

In the end he has put his reputation on the line and I cannot imagine he would want to lose his credibility and rapport with the fans. But then we also were told that Freddy wouldn't be leaving weren't we ? - at least until just after the seaso discount deadline day

No - that's someone else. I admit to living in Colchester, but I only go to Layer Road to watch the mighty shrimpers!

So I support Aberdeen and go to Pitodire every other week.................

The terms.......grow up spring to mind!!!!

Bit harsh there mate Taxi drivers are trying to make a living my dad is a London Taxi driver and sorry I take offense to that!

While I agree that Ron is now fully behind the club, it was only about 4 or 5 years ago that Ron came out and said that if things didn't work out then he would sell the club on or fold it if there was no buyer.
O.K. I'm paraphrasing a bit, but the quote can probably be found online somewhere still, I know it used to be on a website set up for struggling clubs.
However, I'm willing to accept that He may have had to say that at the time, as he was head of the main consortium that ran the club, who he has since bought out.
In my eyes Ron is doing a good job, but he is a business man first and fan second, and the minute we forget that and take him for granted we will get bit on the ****.

I'd hardly say that it's Ron vs. Tilly. If it ever was there would only be one winner, the boss never loses.

Look, as anyone that knows me, or even reads this board, knows.... I am Ron's biggest critic, and possibly biggest dis-liker... however, recently, such things as the interview on radio, meeting with smiffy et al, and the biggest one, coming on the pitch and stating what was happening, and apologising for the recent weeks.. well, that in my book, is top draw. Long may it continue, however, i really wish i could be 100% confident our club is safe with him.. getting there, slowly, just not yet. As i said, we will see what happens, the next year is massive for him and this club.

Same here, thought it was a big mistake not offering Constantine more than 700 quid a week but he certainly talks sense. The radio interview with him on Saturday he came accross really well unlike our frustrated manager. Couldn't quite make out why Tilly was so frustrated as the Walker deal was moreless sorted along with other things in the pipeline.

I think we only offered Constantine £700 per week because that is all Steve Tilson thought that he was worth, rather than through any restraints on spending from Ron Martin.
