Ron backs Tilly - BBC News Website..

Sawyer said in his bit in the Chelsea programme that Tilly didn't know much about him when he signed. I guess that we didn't want to commit a years worth of money on one player without seeing him first.

Exactly, because you can bet on your life that had he not been good enough, people on here would be moaning about what a waste of money he was.

loan players can be expensive - certainly if from prem clubs - even if we only pay 30-40%
of their wages ....

when he came here Sawyer had been out for a year with injuries, was incapable of playing more than 70 mins and had not played league football

That never stopped us in the past!

and no doubt if he had been **** people would complain that we were paying wages and getting nothing back for it.

how many players have we taken on for a month and then sent back, should we have signed all of them for a year as well ??

an alternative way of looking at this is -- Tilly took a ount on a player he knew little about, and it woked !!!
MY question would be why are we signing pople he knows little about !!!

That may depend on the terms of the loan.

As for the comment that Tilly didn't know much about Sawyer... that's another problem that should be addressed in future (scouting) rather than an answer.

Of course it's an answer. I don't know how many scouts we employ but I doubt it's enough for them to know all about every player on the books at every club in the country. Sawyer had spent most of the last two years injured too.

From what I recall, Brushy said that Chelsea gave us a heads up that Sawyer was going to be available on loan. With hindsight it's bitterly disappointing that we weren't willing to commit to a years loan but as has been said if we took him for a year and he was this season's Kerrea Gilbert then people would be complaining about that too.

and you can understand Tilly's thinking, Sawyer had only played a few reserve matches for Chelsea and had some long injuries.

So we pay him like 500 pound per week in wages and if it didn't work out we either send him back to cheslki or just put him on the bench, furlong didn't even get on the bench and we payed him 2K per week
