Post-Match Thread and Ratings Rochdale 3-4 Southend United

Can't wait for FGR next week provided I can get a ticket. For any fans going to the next game I would recommend you visit the away fans guide on their website for detailed information as this ground is in a small village and normal amenities are not available (especially burgers and the like!).

I wonder if the COSU could arrange for a burger and/or kebab van to be stationed near the ground?

What an evening that was, just back from Manchester late yesterday. We thoroughly deserved to progress and did even allowing for a ref who was clearly a homer. We had been 4 games without conceding so no surprises with team selection just the one change up top. It was alarming to see Rochdale cut through us first 60 minutes. Their forward players were big, strong, fast and athletic and we struggled to keep them at bay. However once they got their 2 goal lead on 64 minutes McNumpty does what he always does and tinkers. Firstly he takes off the dangerous winger Allarakhia for the aging veteran centre half Hogan. This completely hands the initiative to us as all of a sudden we have more space in midfield. Then he takes off the energetic Barlow for the oap Henderson. Next is Jay Bird who was second only to Devante Rodney in terrorising our back line for the completely ineffectual Kairo Mitchell. Rochdale fans hate this player and are in meltdown at McNumpty’s naivety in these situations. The difference was our subs improved our team whereas Rochdale’s severely weakened. Having said that glad we got the winner as did not fancy penalties.

Hayes 6.5
Taylor 6.5
Goodliffe 7
Ralph 7.5
GSM 7
KAF 9 MOTM
Husin 6.5
Coker 6.5
Bridge 6
Hopper 7.5
Walker 6.5

Bonne 8
LCP 8
Kendall 8
Miley 6.5
Gubbins 6

KAF clear MOTM, outstanding 120 minutes of non stop running. I like our current settled team with such strength and skill sitting on the bench waiting to tear it up against tiring legs. McNumpty said it was our clout and EFL strength? from the bench (only Bonne played in EFL and Gubbins on for only 2 minutes) that won the game. The fool failed to mention it was his decision to weaken his side by making the wrong subs and too early, before the game was won.
Onto FGR think we can win there also and set up a classic final with probably York, although not writing off Oldham,
Finally big thanks and praise to Kev, staff and players for the monumental effort and comeback. Very proud UTB

Now I’m starting to recover from this game. I’d love to see the refs performance analysed and then hopefully demoted to the park leagues. One of the worst “homers” if not the worst I’ve seen at this level and that’s saying something.
Was he a 'homer' or just inept ? Rochdale certainly got the better of the decisions but it wasn't like there were 50,000 home fans baying for blood and no away support. I've managed to become quite philosophical about the officiating at this level. It's like everything else from the governing body down to the stadiums and the facilities. 5th rate.

This afternoon the Palace coach took a leaf out of Kev's coaching manual and wanted the ball to be played wide down the right for a player to run on to, just like Gus to Bonne and then the cross into the box for the goal. Munoz is a fast learner and raced down the wing like Bonne before crossing to Eze to finish like Leon (sort of!). This is the way to go on Wednesday at FGR. Problem is FGR will have 2 or 3 crowding out Bonne.

He made some great stops as well and got done by some sloppy defending, rein it in.

Nonsense, the first goal is a standard use your hands and dive on the ball….he was nearer than the striker but decided to make the shape of a star and stand up, total mistake. Don’t remember these massive saves, standard good height saves yeah.
He is not the answer and thankfully Collin is fit again. It is not all about great saves, anticipation and getting off that goal line stopping things happen is the art and he certainly ain’t got it!

I have more confidence in Hayes when it comes to hi catching the high ball crosses. He made one fumble on Thursday night, but overall every time he goes for a high cross he claims it.

Well according to wiki Hayes isn’t a footballer anyway (scroll down to squad)

Personally, I think Collin is a great keeper and if he can stay fit, will only get better. However Hayes fills me with much more confidence as it stands today and is also a great communicator.

Really?….had two to deal with, first was a straightforward catch, fumbled it, second a high one that should have been caught or tipped over, managed to fumble it on to the bar. Got no confidence in him whatsoever and would struggle to get a game for Great Wakering

Steve Arnold was superb for us in the two years he was here, probably got us an extra 8 points, not just shot stopping but controlling the area….hopefully Collin will be back in as this bloke will cost us 8

Mervyn Cawston was also fantastic for us as was Sammy, but sadly neither these two, nor Arnold, are available.

I look forward to your, ‘I told you so’ moment, either next week or at Wembley with bated breath (NOT).

Hayes is a good shot stopper and good at claiming balls in the air. He makes the odd mistake or misjudgement - but he’s a national league keeper.

What he really needs to work on is his presence where there are bodies around him. I suspect this has been the case for a while as he’s clearly built up strength in the top half of his body. So maybe it’s now about practice and confidence.
