Rio Ferdinand

For some strange reason almost every England fan (including myself) believe we have a devine right to win every major tournament we enter. When we dont we have to have someone to blame. More often than not its the manager that cops it.
We have played some very good football under SGE. As has already been mentioned the "Fluke" goal against Brazil halted our progress into the semi finals of the world cup.
The french game Euro 2004. A few moments lapse of concentration stops us from getting anything. And then going out to the finalists and hosts after a very poor performance from the ref.
These are not excuses, they are reasons we havent progressed further.

It can get very frustrating when you consider the talent that SGE has at his disposal.

What is very bemusing is the fact that so many people are so quick to criticise talented players. This goes for our national squad as well as Southend Utd.

The bottom line is that SGE is NOT good enough to be England manager...
I'm not clutching at straws at all, I'm presenting facts/opinions as I see them. And the FACT is that there is nothing a manager can do about a freak goal of the nature of Ronaldinho's in the world cup.

But no, ultimately it doesn't make a difference, whether a goal is a fluke or a screamer, we still came 'remotely close' to winning the last world cup, but were beaten by a Brazilian side that went on to win it.

Not good enough? As stated previously, he has just about the best record of any England manager in recent years.

It's not a divine right but look at the list of national managers before the European Championships, then look at the list afterwards. Other countries measure their success in trophies and some managers don't wait to be pushed.

I hate to be in agreement with Steve again but if the FA are stupid enough to offer an extended contract at £4m per year then why walk ?

Call it arrogance, but I believe that England should be qualifying for all major tournaments. Whilst Sven has a very impressive record in these qualification games, these consists predominantly of games we should be winning.

Where you can really judge an international manager is on the big stage, the World Cup and Euro Champs (when the manager has had time to prepare his players, players don't pull out with dubious injuries etc.) against the big teams.

Here Sven has fallen short. Sven's England has been up against 4 big teams: Argentina, Brazil, France and Portugal. England's record is a not particularly impressive won 1, lost 3 (one of these was on penalties). But the damning fact is that England lead in all 4 games and were only once able to hold onto the lead.

Not only that but in all 4 games I (and I don't think I'm alone) think England's tactics once we'd taken the lead were horribly misguided. I could forgive it once, but three times I feel has shown Sven to be tactically naive.

Its a shame as I feel Sven has otherwise done a good job, most would agree that his squad selections were pretty much spot on (I would say especially Chris Powell!), he seemed to prepare the players well and managed to be above the premier$hite club rivalries that can ruin the England team. However ultimately I think he has been shown to be lacking at the highest level.
