Ring of Fire

Perhaps it is because I don't go to away games or something but the significance of "Ring of Fire" has past me by. Why is that played/do folk sing it? It is because rings are on fire at the prospect or relegation?

I think it's a combination of it being the in-vogue football song of the moment, Coventry were singing it last night when their 2nd goal went in, plus one of the away games when we were in all-red (Birmingham I think), somebody likened us to Liverpool (it is a scouse football song after all)!

No doubt I'll get corrected if I'm wrong!

Err... is it a scouse song?

It's a Johnny Cash C&W song I think.

Stoke use it I think as it was being played pre-game on the SKY match they recently had with Barnsley.

It's also really easy and you can clap along as well... plus as away fans if you keep singing it for 15 minutes or so it's really annoying for the home fans.

First time I heard us do it was at Barnsley in the FA Cup replay. Must have gone on for circa 20 mins and a group of Shrimpers were doing the conger around the stand. Tilly even said he felt like coming over and joining in. Was a good rendition at St Andrew's when we went 3-1 up!

Yeah its a liverpool song, dont really know why southend sing it, I prefer "we're by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen"

I have had a moan about southend supporters singing this son before as it has absolutely no reference to Southend United F.C whatsoever!

The song is becoming more and more poplar throughout football and clubs up and down the country.

It was originally sung in this country by Liverpool supporters and I guess they kind of 'adopted' it as a song of theirs, however, I have heard it is sung by them as a reference to the munich disaster - although I wouldnt know if this is true or not!

I agree, I hate non-personal songs that every club sings. Never happened in my day...(must be getting old!!) Hopefully it will go out of fashion as quickly as it came in...

Staying with the country, cross-over into Rock 'n Roll theme I would advocate the Conway Twitty classic It's Only Make Believe. A true classic!

theres a few of us who have the famous SUFC at Barnsley away (FACup) singing Ring of Fire on our phones ringtone and its effing brilliant - and if you were there you would know how well it goes when the Blues are bossing it -

if you are consumed by envy and really want it pm me and i will send you the
audio file ...

and for mental moments the goal last nite was a MENTAL MOMENT

Whilst I hate the soccerAMisation of football where it doesn't matter what ground you are in as everyone sings the same bloody songs (easy, easy; that tom hark one; ring of fire etc), at least it actually has our fans singing. Rather than discouraging fans from singing, I'd rather see people propose/start alternative songs instead.

ps It does have some reference to Southend United in it, when people add in S..U..F..C..

See my post above. I'll sing it on the pitch before the Leeds game if required (for a sizeable Chesney Hawkes style fee, of course).

I've never heard another team sing Ring of Fire but there you go.

But I agree with you there is a severe lack of originality nowadays.

Since terracing went a lot of individualism seems to have gone from clubs, and more reliance on 'popular' anthems. But this is better than no-one singing

Other teams that have known to sing a version of 'Ring of Fire' include Liverpool (started in 2002, played in the dressing room before the Champions League Final in 2005), Cardiff City (played when they score at home), Hearts (played before each game), Hereford United (started in 2005 and sung by the players when they won the Conference play-offs), Everton, Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry City. Further afield we have NHL's Calgary Flames (their victory song), WHL's Saskatoon Blades (their victory song), Adelaide United (in honour of player Nathan Burns), Valencia CF (one of their ultra groups sing it; they also sing OMD's Enola Gay) and Hercules CF.

I think Southend United got in late on the craze! ;)
