I've seen in many threads recently people saying this club now has a 'reputaion'. I was wondering if it is only a handful of fans that support Southend that think this or other clubs?

A lot of people also saying this is due to recent events when nothing out of the ordinary has actually happened really? (You could possibly consider the pitch invasion incident)

Once a few events happen, no matter how insignificant, then the rumour machine that is football fans goes into overdrive. The very fact that we had a Stevenage fan on here asking whether it was safe to bring his girl friend here suggests that it is so easy to get a bit of a rep, and incredibly difficult to get out of the headlights once there. I spent a little bit of time on the Bury fans message board recently and they were delighting in our smoke bomb episode and imagining all sorts of nasty punishments for us. It's what football fans do unfortunately. I doubt very much that it is a handful of fans only on here.

Simple question, not moaning.

There is a system on this forum which allows users to add/subtract "Reputation" based on the posts made. At the bottom of each post is a grey bar with a 6 pointed star which allows you to add (or "green") reputation or subtract (or "red") reputation someone. It has become common to "red" someone who moans about this system, followed by a post mentioning why.

Little bit of SZ history for you there, now I REALLY need to get out more ...

Unfortunately whether you think "nothing out of the ordinary has happened" I can come up with a list of consequences which have affected innocent Southend fans thanks to a few idiots acting up (which they inevitably pass off as just 'having a laugh') and harming our reputation.

A substantial five-figure fine for the second smoke bomb which could be the difference between signing a top player in the summer and not
Increased police presence at home games, which has to be paid for by the club.
Increased police presence at away games, preventing some fans from frequenting their pubs of choice
Away fans being searched before going through turnstiles at Stevenage (as a result of Portsmouth smoke bomb)
Plastic glasses in Spread and Railway before matches
The insistence that both these pubs are now home fans only, depriving the publicans of crucial matchday revenue.

There are probably more but I can't think of any. Whether you think there's been an overreaction or not, this is what's been happening as a result.

I'm getting a bit lost here, I thought BJB was asking whether the club was developing a bit of a reputation. It would be great if we could use the rep system on here to fix it, but I think that way not help all that much. If I have missed your point I apologise.

I was make it clear what YB was posting about.

No doubting you, but where did you hear it was a 5 figure sum for the fine? That is pretty annoying if true!

Says the guy that thinks smoke bombs are OK. Have a look at the poll on that thread. I think you'll find that you are very much in the minority. I would therefore argue that most people think that is very much out of the ordinary regardless of your opinion.

Add to that the Cambridge fan who is still in hospital who was reported as attacked after a Southend game, which most people (rightly or wrongly) will put 2 and 2 together.

You can also add to that the issues with Luton. It doesn't matter who we know/think was at fault, the fact of the matter is that both sides were at fault.

Morecambe didn't help either. It may not have been much but it was still unsightly and an embarrassment. It was telling that most Southend Fans were actually booing these idiots.

It doesn't take much to get a reputation, and I would argue that it isn't for "nothing out of the ordinary".

In fact, if you think the above is ordinary I think your moral compass needs to be reset.

Just to prove that taking flares to matches, therefore adding to any reputation, has resulted in a Scunthorpe United supporter being arrested by the Police and charged. So please be warned

With the exception of that poor bloke from Cambridge what's gone on this season and indeed for many recently is nothing compared to the 70's & 80's. Can't believe this "Reputation" nonsense and at Morecambe it was no worse than insolent children not getting their own way. Footballs never been safer but some people are going soft.

But it wasn't even Southend fans that beat up that Cambridge bloke? It was people from southend but not fans, as far as I know anyway. As for smoke bombs, my view has nothing to do with it, they are a common sight this end of the season, if you haven't seen them all throughout the football league in the past few weeks you must have your head in the sand! As someone just mentioned some people are going soft IMO.

Very true. I was standing by the front railing by the pitch (by the exit area) at the end of the game with my 2 sons when the the 2 chaps argueing came down and ended up right by us, they stopped right up against my 14 year old sons back where they continued their disagreement, but to be honest i did feel threatend at all, neither my 14 year son, it just did not seem to be that much of a concern, just hand bags, that all - imo.

Ive seen quite a few away surporters get ejected from our ground or the away grounds we have been to, but then do not asoiate that club with having a reputation as a result.

I still really beleive that SUFC is a family club, and long may it be so.

Snr.

/QUOTE]

Most Pubs near Football Grounds serve Beer & Wine in Plastic Glasses on Match days. Lloyds Bar in the Fulham Broadway complex for starters, and that's a home fans only Pub.
Regarding 'home fans only' Pubs re match day revenue, how many times is The Spread half empty before a game?.

Dont agree. Have you ever heard of a 'firm' of our fans kicking off in a home fans pub, like Cambridge did down here?. Or a 'firm' of our fans waiting outside the home fans exit, like Luton did at the West Stand a couple of weeks ago?.
Every club has a handful of idiots following them, and probably always will do.
