Regarding Roots Hall

EastStandBlue

Life President
Somebody i know, who has no affiliation to the club at all and could well be unreliable, informed me earlier that Roots Hall itself has been sold to a National Supermarket chain for a large sum. The understanding is that we are to be out by the beginning of the 2008/2009 season so that building work can commence.

Personally, I'm very doubtful of this rumour. Plans haven't been submitted yet and RM said he expected development on FF to start in early April, meaning the whole stadium would have to be completed in just over 16 months

Off topic but it seem's work has started on the 3rd floor extension of the East stand...

Anyone else see this?

Will it be finished before the new season?

Was wondering why scaffolding was erected last week, anybody know what will actually be in place there?

Didn't Tescos or someone provissionally shake a deal for the land on which Roots Hall stands?

I do not recall there being a clause or time period for vacation though.

Hopefull easier toilet access or maybe a Krispy kreme doughnut kiosk.

A rumour about Roots Hall being sold to a national Supermarket

Have I gone back in time 10 years ?

That said, the timescales fit in with the stadium plans ron mentioned and I had heard that Sainsbury's were after expanding their presence in the town.

I could imagine traffic access to a major store may prove a stumbling block on that site and I could see the planning application taking longer than the stadium too

I believe its more office/corporate hospitality space..

I'd be very suprised, i thought the majority of land (like in roots halls case) has to be developed as residental from now on to cope with the housing crisis (or potential crisis) over the next decade or so.

I'm probably wildly out of date on this, but I thought that the Borough's Urban Development Plan had Roots Hall zoned as a residential area, meaning that Tescos wouldn't be allowed to build on the current site...

Does anyone agree that the North Stand electronic scoreboard (the one that used to grace the top of the Highstreet by Victoria Circus) is not really up to Championship standards?

I think the scoreboard from TVs Family Fortunes could do a job for us and it would certianly make the rest of the league sit up and take notice.

What about Roy Walker's big board from Catchphrase - is that still being used...?

Thought that wasnt possible as it was built on an old dump, or indian burial ground or something.

Tesco's had an option around 20 years ago when Jobson was looking to relocate us. Must have long since expired.

As for the current rumour, sounds nonsense to me. The Council and club have yet to agree (at least publicly) what will be allowed to be built on Roots Hall. Last I heard was the Council favouring residential with some sort of urban regeneration (open spaces etc).

Can't see Tesco's wanting to build a store with a mile or so of another one of their premises. Doesn't mean the Sainsburys rumour might not be true though, although I still reckon it will need to fulfil some form of residential development to get past the DofEnv

also, considering tesco have just had a major growth of there main Southend store and opened up Locals in westcliff, on Hamlet Court road, and in the Royals, i dont think they need anymore land around here!

I know I've been away a while but is there not also a Sainsbury's within a mile of Roots Hall at the top of the High St?
