Ref watch - another beginner

This time the rookie coming to do our match on Saturday is Steve Cook officiating in his second ever League One match, having also done half a dozen League Two matches. Got his first red card at this level out of his system in the Cup last weekend.
Burst on to the League scene with a truly dreadful debut at Shrewsbury v Rochdale and has presumably improved as he's still getting games. Only 23.

Improved he has ... and to the extent that he was one of the better officials to visit this season. Refereed unobtrusively, generally up with play, let the game flow, good advantages played. Being picky, a couple of his cautions were a bit arbitrary and it would have been better if he hadn't had to be told by the 4th official who to caution after the advantage. It wasn't a massively difficult game to officiate, but the lad done well.

Moderators, can you please lock Mick's account. Someone appears to have hacked in and posted something positive and without his trademark biting cynicism! :p

As ever, Mick is spot on. Barely noticed the ref, which is always a good sign. No idea why he booked Hunt or one of their players though.

Any news as to who we have next?

Who are you and what have you done with Mick?

Sorry to disappoint. Must try harder.

Next appointments have not yet been made. I will of course let you know when they have. Warning: I hear Barry Knight has at last passed his fitness test and will probably be warming up for his Premiership ineptitude in the lower divisions. (Is that better?)

Mike Newell is a **** though so its irrelevant!

Mike Newell might not be your favourite ex-Manager (or anyone else's for that matter) but he is spot on with some of what he said about Amy. It IS tokenism. If a male referee officiated to the same standard that she does, he would not get past the Ryman League. She is a better Assistant Referee than she is a Referee (and Newell was commenting on her lining !!!). Please only dispute this if you've actually seen her referee.

After his performance in the Orient game, the hardly.:thump:

I thought the ref was one of the best ones we've had done here in a while. As has been said, he made a few errors (Hunt's booking and clearly not knowing who had fouled Maher in the second half) but he controlled the game well and didn't seem to want to be the star of the show.

As for Amy Rayner, I've never seen her referee a game but she was one of the few people who ran that line last season who I couldn't complain about.

didnt notice the ref that much yesterday which is obviously a good thing. for once nice to see a decent ref and not trying to be centre of attention. well done.

Generally agreed, was a fairly decent performance. Although I thought it was good that he asked the 4th official about who to caution, he played advantage so had to follow the play and didn't note which player committed the offence, but had the guts to admit this and ensured the correct outcome. Although didn't like that he kept Maher off for about 30 seconds or so.
