Smith could have come because Luggy has already decided Brown is good, plus Brown probably has a few options available to himself so wouldn't want to be in Spain while negotiations are in place. Luggy may have had another look at Smith as a back up in case Brown decides to go elsewhere.

Does Smith sound any better than the generally sound Glenn Morris....I suggest not so what the hell is Sturrock playing at?

....and I will add that 95% of us on here once judged Morris to be in at least the top 3 keepers in League 2 where Smith couldn't even get a game....what is going on Cluniemore mouthpiece?

Im in the other 5% then. Too quiet and doesn't command his area enough to be a top keeper. Right decision to let him go but Sturrock has to ensure he gets a better keeper now, so I'm happy for him to take his time to get it right.

Is anyone one on SZ a qualified goalkeeping coach ? As there views would be interesting my view is Daniels will be our number 1 and Smith our back up and Bentley will go on loan until Xmas

I think wiggy is exaggerating when he said 95% of us thought Morris was in L2's top 3 - it was nowhere near that high. I was in the "5%" category too.....

Not sure it's good news that he is sturrocks number one target! Can't seem to see he is a poor goalie and that we have jettisoned better goalies. 3 weeks till season start and no number one signed up yet.

Surely Sturrock's not stupid though, Smith may have played for him before but if he was poor again today then surely we won't offer him a deal. Luggy's only aim is to get this club promoted, he won't risk sticking Smith in the most important position on the pitch if he's not good enough just because he's an old boy.

I don't, tbh. It sounds like an excuse to justify an opinion you've already formed of the bloke.

Neil Harris said when he signed that he was here because of the three year contract. I doubt Freddy Eastwood is here for the love.

To be fair though I doubt he's here for the money either, or the standard of football as he could surely have got better elsewhere on both these counts.

I believe Freddy is here because of location and also because he knows the fans love him here (along with the fact he has stated he hasn't enjoyed his football since leaving Roots Hall but did enjoy his loan spell). It's certainly not through greed or else why re-join Southend?

Agree with this. Something doesn't make sense?? If by the majority of accounts (and I haven't seen him play) he just isn't good enough and possibly pricey, why is Luggy persevering? Is it simply to get a keeper to play on the tour? And if so why not use Bentley?
I'm not one for jumping on band wagons but I would think its a bit easier for the average fan to more accurately judge how good/bad a keeper is compared to an outfield player, which is why the consensus of negative views worries me.

Anyways will give him my full support if we sign him however.

need to drop interest in smith sturrock, not endearing himself to fans, and although you make the ultimate decision on players and we shouldnt really be a big influence in you, in this case a permanent deal for smith could see a section of fans turning on you for good. brown wants to come. so did belford. i cant see why you havent just wrapped up a deal for one of them.

He was decent in his first season, but an absolute liability last season

Just a crazy thought here but maybe sturrock took him on tour so he could judge his performance over a few more games/training sessions? The guy has obviously had a bad time of it in his trial but surely it makes sense for sturrock just to make sure over a couple more games that it was just a bad day at the office.

That would make sense, apart from the fact Chris Phillips has stated Smith has been Sturrock's number one goalkeeping target all summer, and the only reason he hasn't signed before is disagreements over wages.

He's seemingly had a bad time on his trial and is still with us!? That to me is 'crazy'. Like I said though I will support any new Southend United player irrespective, but previous and current reports/opinions don't fill me with confidence (together with alleged wage demands).
