Bit late for a "pre-match" thread isn't it? Already started and 1-0 up through Harris according to Twitter a few moments ago! Spicer missing through tight thigh, Harris scored after 3 mins from a Tomlin cross.

Southend vs Real Madrid C: Smith, Clohessy, Cresswell, Phillips, Straker, Brogan, Hurst, Ferdinand, Leonard, Harris, Tomlin

Subs: Bentley, Hall, Coughlan, Martin, Prosser, Barker, Eastwood, Benyon

Madrid winning 2-1 now, Phil Smith just fouled their attacker to concede the penalty that puts them ahead.

Lets be honest even if he did well on this tour so many of us don't want him. He's also apparently told Cheltenham fans he isn't coming here anyway, so if he now does it's only because of wages. Good for Harris to get a goal.

We should bring Brown with us not Smith, he was rubbish Vs **** Ham, come on Cheltenham, offer him a deal far away from us!

Don't get me wrong I haven't seen him yet so I've no idea what it's like but it is very funny how Southend fans are now taking their obsession for a boo boy to new levels by rounding on one before he's even signed. I reckon we should have kept Gilbert just to channel the negative energy.

I haven't seen nor know much about Smith so will reserve judgement until/if I see him. What I find interesting is the anti sentiment already about him especially after his first performance.

I recently read 'Graduation' by Richard Lee, the Brentford gk, and there are some parallels between his and Smith's first game for Brentford in a friendly against Fulham. He had a mare, made a mistake on first goal, were 3 - 0 down in half an hour and was already a target for the Brentford fans, and end up losing 5 - 0. Richard went from 1st to 3rd choice but went on to be their Player of the season.

Now I'm not saying this will be the case with Smith but I'm willing to trust in Sturrock's judgement and if he thinks he's the man for the job so be it. I hope if we do sign him he will be given a chance by the fans, even if he isn't their first choice. After all, confidence is a big part of performance in sport.

BTW, Graduation is a good read.

Why do you think 97% of footballers join any particular club?

Of course, but to know that he's told fans of another club "I'm not going there" annoys me. Yes a lot of players do only join because of wages, but I prefer not to know that it was the deciding factor with a specific player. I can choose to believe people like Cresswell came for a new challenge, even if it isn't true. With Smith I'll always now know it's only because of wages, if you get what I mean.

I know what you mean Hazey. I like Susanna Reid and the fact she doesn't wear a wedding or an engagement ring. I enjoy the illusion she's saving herself for me even though I know she's happily being doinked by her other half.

I don't, tbh. It sounds like an excuse to justify an opinion you've already formed of the bloke.

Neil Harris said when he signed that he was here because of the three year contract. I doubt Freddy Eastwood is here for the love.

Trouble is, mistake and Smith is a recurring theme....bit like Sturrock and stubborn mistake I think!

Smith could have come because Luggy has already decided Brown is good, plus Brown probably has a few options available to himself so wouldn't want to be in Spain while negotiations are in place. Luggy may have had another look at Smith as a back up in case Brown decides to go elsewhere.
