Racist Remarks

Or people calling Harrold a 'ginga'?! I'm sure freddy can handle any remarks, he's obviously very proud of his roots

Can someone also watch out for abusive remarks about size and, of course, complications about parentage? And while you're at it, check that no-one makes any sort of remark about the health of the referee. We must stamp all this abuse out ...

Now, where is that sarcasm smiley?

If the police waded in to crowds, every time somone shouted somthing offencive, they would be yanking people out crowds all over the country.

Agreed.. I think that the best song I've heard all year was at WHL,

"The wheels on your house,
go round and round, round and round,
The wheels on your house,
go round and round, round and round"

You have to laugh...

Heard that at col ewe earlier in the season

I must admit i had to laugh when the palace fans were singing

' we pay your council tax'
'we pay your council tax '

It's true that southend has got a bit of reputation of being a bit so called 'pikey'

but you know what...........bothered

i got lads at work come from all over london and kent who call me pikey boy just on the back of the Eastwood articles thay have read recently , but thats the way it is

i'm from southend, i'm proud to be from there and always will be.

well i'd

Every two or three weeks we seem to have a racist abuse themed thread. I thought it had been done to death before but apparently not.

Anyway, if we're airing opinions again here's mine.
I couldn't care less what anyone calls me. It's irrelevant and not worth getting worked up about.

The only exception to that rule is if the remarks are made about the color of the person they're aimed at. Anything else is, IMO, just political correctness.

I love you. :D

I agree, I may only be 16 but I'm gonna be a blues supporter through and through (I already am!) and you aint seen the last of me at the hall! I'm gonna stick with them through the good and the rough.

The police won't do anything. but we can.

If we want to eliminate the racist chanting that's started emanating from the North Bank this season, then one option would be to create our own evidence and fuss over it, starting with the Col Ewe match.

Take a video on your mobile phone, upload it to YouTube, and e-mail the link to the police, the FA, the local media and anybody else who might be interested. If enough people do this then it's going to be pretty difficult for all of the above to ignore. Remember the videos of the Wet Sham scum taunting the Spurs fans with racial abuse? We won't attract coverage on the same scale, but we can kick up as big a fuss as possible.

I can hear the attempted counterargument now - "it's just harmless banter", etc. No it isn't. It's an abusive term used on account of someone's ethnic background, and it's legally no more defensible than any of the multitude of terms aimed at black players in past decades. Ignorance of that fact is not a defence. If you don't want your club to be associated with racist abuse and face possible punishment for it then don't dish it out - it really is that simple.

Its whether you class chants of pikey as racist.

I dont.

We will get called that long after Freddy has left and Im sure chants of pikey chavs were well before his arrival.

"Pikey" used in connection with Freddy is clearly a reference to his ethnicity. Unfortunately his ethnicity just happens to be one which doesn't seem to attract the same kind of popular condemnation of racist abuse as blacks, asians, etc. That doesn't make the abuse legal.

My post is only a suggestion anyway. If anybody else wants the Col Ewe fans, or any other clubs', to be held accountable for their actions then it seems to me to be the most promising route to take. If it doesn't bother you, or you don't consider it racist, then ignore it. I'm just suggesting a course of action to those who might be interested.

When Freddy leaves and Col U are still chanting pikey chants will you still report them as racist ?

Probably. Thirty years ago the same sort of arguments were doubtless had over such delightful ditties as:

"Town full of p*kis"
"Town full of n*ggers"

...and so on. Why the distinction in this instance? Pikey is recognised as a racist term and it does cause offence to many people of Romany descent, ergo it constitutes racial abuse regardless of anybodies own feelings towards the Romany people.

There are no clear boundaries between abuse and banter, but it's widely acknowledged that racism oversteps the line by some way. I just don't understand why this doesn't seem to apply to this particular ethnic group in some people's eyes. Aren't they shouting loudly enough about it?

Well I personally think theres a difference in abusing someone for skin colour or religion than it is for taking the mickey out of a way of life.

I know little of romany way of life but to me it seems to be a lifestyle choice and my opinion is that its no different than having a chant against vegetarians.

Now in 10 years I may look back on these comments and call myself a bigot :)

I stand by the point I always make, that if Freddy played for Col U there would be no objections to the chants and we would be making them.

Sounds like a good idea . What was really offensive was the way the Derby fans hounded Fredi - in fairness I didn't detect that from the Leeds fans . If it is just a general chant aimed at a group of fans such as 'inbreds' which we all know is not true, then it is clearly less offensive than derogatory remarks aimed at one person who happens to come from that minority race - whether or not he is vegetarian .
