Question. Why did our attendances start to rise?

I haven’t read all the way through this, but we shouldn’t forget the damage that Anton Johnson did in the mid 80s, especially when the supporters Christmas Club money wasn’t there when they came to get it back. It would have been the last straw for a lot of regulars, many of whom who wouldn’t have returned for years.

Really, Southend as a catchment and town/city has so much potential.

The population has boomed at a time when people no longer can afford or want to go to a giant bowl and watch players go through the motions in the Premier league and pay £100+ for a ticket, burger and a beer etc.

There is much to be said for supporting a local side and making friends etc.

The matchday for me isn't just about the football. It's the pub before and after and having a good afternoon and evening.

The thought of travelling to London every home game is alien to me.

If we can rejuvenate roots Hall in the coming years to a capacity of 15k and get efl football then I see no reason why 10k+ every home game wont be the norm.

9k this Friday to see to 5th tier sides shows that..

Fwiw. I can remember playing Preston North end in league 1 or 2 in the late 90s or early 00s at home and I'm sure the crowd was 2200 odd.

Never would I have thought then that crowds of 8k would be possible in tier 5.

Indeed, to get those figures in the league we are in and with the brand of football we play, the potential is clearly there.

I believe that he wrote in his book that Southend would have gone up that season into the old 1st Division , and he regreted walking out on Southend . All together now 'Karen Brady Is a W***e' .
I can remember when I was a child, I took over as Southend Utd manager in Championship Manager game of 1993/94 season, my first season was a promotion to Premiership. With almost same squad (I only added D. Yorkie (Villa), R. Fox (Norwich), S. Campbell (Spurs)) that Barry Fry built, Southend Utd was more than held their own in Premiership as I finished 12th in my first season, I made the League Cup final and won it. To take Southend Utd to next level, I signed Stan Collymore from Forest 🤣

Grew up watching this fantastic team. That league cup final will always stay with me.
